- I can't describe the urge and craving I had to listen to Raga Basant Kedar when I first heard that a raga of this name exists!! Both Individual ragas, Basant and Kedar are so dear to me, that even the thought of a Jod Raga conceived from of these two gems made
me literally crazy for a recording!!
Over time, I was able to collect many recordings of Basant Kedar thanks to ICM rec collector friends.
Here I am uploading renditions of this amazing raga by three stalwarts of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, Mallikarjun Mansur, Kishori Amonkar and Laxmibai Jadhav. Will soon upload recordings by Mogubai
Kurdikar and Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar.
This raga is very dear to artists from this gharana, it being conceived by the father-figure of this gharana, Alladiya Khan.
Interestingly, there aren't many recorded cassettes/ LPs of this raga and all the three recordings are from live performances. The traditional bandish by Alladiya Khan Saheb, " Attara Sugandha", being presented.
Details on the structure of this raga at

In the article, Dr Parrikar elaborates:
" The Atrauli-Jaipur Basanti Kedar retains the framework of Kedar and draws relatively
sparingly on Basant. The latter is introduced typically at the tail end of the following
sequence:
P S", NDN D P, D M, G m D m G m G r S
(M=shuddha and m=teevra madhyam.)
The komal dhaivat of Basant is abandoned. Both the rishabs are employed, the komal
as shown above is the Basanti contribution, the shuddha, for the most part, in the tAra
saptak in Kedaric moves."
This is quintessential Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur:) The eloquence of the earth seems to speak forth. There is something earthy and rustic in his voice, that brings classical music out of the boudoirs and salons, and allows his voice, the raagas, the notes to flow with the many currents of the universe, that hold the human soul up:)
You describe it very well. I understand now why he is my favourite.
Thank you:)
Couldn’t agree with you more ! A very apt description 👌🏼
Great comment with depth of knowledge on his Voice rendition.
Yes....
Mallikarjun Mansur one of the greatest of atrauli jaipur gharana & gem of North karnataka. Beautifully woven basant n kedar ..
Very subtle
DEPTH AND WHIRLS IN HIS VOICE ARE UNPARALLELED AND HENCE HE IS UNIQUE. AND THE BEST
Voice of eternal soul!!
The very first note.....how it feels just share the experiences,
Slow and effective flow of Jod raga touches our heart and intellectual hindustani classical derivation.
Mallikarjun Mansur has the perfect voice, sweet & inherently melodious. His rendition of Basant Kedar is fast becoming one of my most favorite pieces from the immensely rich Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. Many thanks Shishir for this upload and I wait with baited breath to listen to my most favorite vocalist, the legendary Kesarbai Kerkar's version of this sublime jod raga!
etheral music. outstanding

Simply superb 🙏🙏 real gold from Panditji..
A rare gem from Dharwad, Karnatatak and great achievement in Autroli Jaipur Gharana. Though I can't understand the Jod-Raga , but can feel the richness.
Thanks for uptoading this. Gives a complete ignoramus like me to enjoy these.Over the past years I have also realised that true music does not have to possess the understanding technically to enjoy it.However, I also thank those who give the structure which may help me later to 'understand' the Raga as I proceed on this path of learning.
beautufull this combination ! and what what a artist !!!

I had heard him in my early teens at the Academy of Fine Arts and he had closed with Jhinjhoti. My parents and I had been thrilled to hear him. What gharana is this?
Jaipur Atrauli gharana
thank you:) I recently heard Kukhub Bilawal and a Hori based on this raaga, in which Ali Akbar played and Asha Bhonsle sang. It was wonderful. I am mentioning it because you might enjoy hearing it. It was posted by Mahendra Parelkar, in his Whatsapp site swarayatra.....
Sreemati Mukherjee Bilawal is a favourite raag of this gharana and is sung in its many forms- alahia bilawal, yamani bilawal, shukla bilswal, khukub b etc. You can search UA-cam & find. Moghubai, Kesarbai, Kishori Amonkar, Jankibai, Rajshekhar Mansur are some of the prominent singers among a host of others
Also Mukerjee
@@arghamukerjee106 Since whenwas Jankibai a member of the Jaipur Gharana??
Is it Ustad Zakir Hussain on tabla by any chance?
Seems so!!
May be Balkrishna Ayyair.
I don't think. The hand sounds different than Zakir's.
Effortless.
Voice of eternal soul!!
