Part of Gretzky’s legacy and genius is his storytelling ability and his way of deflecting credit to others who supported him along his journey. If you listen, almost every question is like a parable where he shares a story about another individual who helped him achieve greatness. He doesn’t really indulge in his own accomplishments at all. Master storyteller and one of the most humble superstars we will ever see.

The most unselfish GOAT sport has ever seen, it's never about him, always his teammates and his idols. He may hold the scoring record and more records than most of us can count but Wayne still considers Gordie Howe to be the best there ever was. To me he'll always be the classiest player regarded as "the best" of any pro sports league. Truly a legend among legends.

I was going to comment the same thing. The man is the greatest athlete in his sports history, but immediately directs the accolades to his peers, and those that came before him.
The star players from the "big 3" sports could learn a lot about humility from this guy.
And man, what I wouldn't give to sit down over a couple of pops with Wayne, just to listen to him tell stories.

Growing up, my dad (from oshawa) always told us the story about how they beat Gretzky's team in 5 games in the finals in a tournament when they were 11. Pretty crazy to hear the same story from Wayne... I guess my dad wasn't lying!

My dad would also like to point out that, yes they were so well coached because two of their coaches had played on the 1958 whitby dunlops that won the world hockey championships (one being Tommy o'connor, couldn't remember the other). AND , that 3 guys from his team did end up making junior A out in the maritimes, so suck on that walt! ;). When I was 8 years old my dad worked for the Penticton Knights and organized a Roast/ Golf tourney for Andy Moog in the summer. We spent the day cleaning our van because we were gonna pick up Gretzky, Glenn Anderson and Brett Callaghan from the airport. Gretzky ended up going in someone else’s car and I cried the entire drive back. Anderson and Callaghan tried to calm me down but I was having none of it. I ended up getting a Gretzky stick out of the deal but used it for road hockey til there was nothing left of it. My dad was so mad when he found out. I think I cried that day too

Being a Winnipegger- it is exciting but heartbreaking knowing that 99 was so close to becoming a Jet. I always heard stories but never from Wayne nor at this length. So crazy to hear that these stories were actually true- and you could have had the greatest player ever if you offered him a new car. So nuts!!!
Gretzky and the Oilers went on to become the greatest team ever assembled though IMO- so it all happend the way it should have. But I still would have loved to see 99 as a Jet.

The Gretzky house was across the street from my best friends house on Varadi Ave here in Brantford right behind Greenbrier Public School which we attended. His trophy room was insane.
Thank you Wayne, you and your Family make us Canucks proud. You're still my Hero till this day. RIP Walter. His presence is sorely missed at the Gretzky Rink. All the best Wayne

So awesome that even the Great One got car lectures from dad after a bad game…if you don’t give 110%, every young player should be ridiculed by father on drive home..and then to share in the good moments with your dad also after games (and not just goals, assists, wins…but unselfish plays, effort, sticking up for your teammates…). Hockey mimics life.

I know a LOT about Wayne and his career (through following him over the years, reading books, articles, etc..) and many of Wayne's interviews are very "vanilla" and basic (with many of the same questions and answers) but THIS was a VERY good interview!!! Very well done guys!! You got Wayne to talk about stuff that he doesn't normally speak about. WELL DONE!! J
