My thoughts - well it is a 4th sequel, probably could have been worse. Sigourney Weaver is awesome as always. Too much goo going on. Thought the mother/baby bond (despite the baby being gross! Ha ha!) was put across relatively well. It is what it is!

Resurrection's premise sounded cool and fun...until I saw the movie. Proof that directors can be miscast too; I love Jeunet's other movies, but French and American senses of humor are already too different, and the extra gross-out is very French imo. (According to all involved, this was supposed to be the dark comedy entry in the series for some reason.) Some good scenes, but off-key tone and strangely tensionless stretches ruin the fun for me.

Fincher's movie didn't work, but you could tell that he understood what made the alien frightening, and it had fine performances and visuals. Jeunet's primary direction seems to have been "More snarls! More saliva! And the same for the creatures!"

I agree that its better than Alien 3 and worse at times. I thought that Alien 3 had more potential, but they just fucked so many things up. Whereas Resurrection is just a fun if you take it for what it is, but it really doesn’t do anything beyond that.

6:17 She made that shot for real. The director wanted to use special effects but she wanted to do it for real so when she saw the scene in the script she practiced until she could do it in around 1 of 6 attempts. So the director said he'd give her the 6 shots to nail it. She missed the first 5 - this was the last attempt.

What we see in the movie is the very first attempt that was filmed. There was no limit set by the director, as Sigourney was determined to do it herself, so they thought it would be a really expensive shot as they expected would take a lot of attempts. They were ecstatic she got it in the first take, then horrified that Ron Pearlman broke character at witnessing it.

The ‘Alien’ franchise has had a tradition of showcasing up and comers in the directing world. Ridley Scott, James Cameron and David Fincher for the first three films respectively. Jean Pierre Jeunet was someone who looked promising to the producers at the time.
My suggestion would be to check out “Delicatessen” and “Amelie” so you can see why the producers decided to take a chance on Jeunet. They rolled the dice and it came up…meh… And just to show that he’s had some misses as well, his latest project “Big Bug” is currently streaming on Netflix. Where “Amelie” was charmingly weird and chaotic, “Big Bug” is just plain weird and chaotic.
This is easily the most accessible film he’s done. His films are for discerning tastes only. Most moviegoers simply find him too weird. My theory is that it’s perhaps difficult for such an oddball director to successfully navigate a big budget Hollywood franchise film. I believe he tried his best, but just couldn’t land the spaceship.
As a side note, when Winona Ryder was offered the part of Call, her initial reaction to the story treatment was “wait…isn’t Ripley dead?” She too didn’t see the point of another sequel…

This movie is not great, but at least it’s watchable and has a sense of fun. That was my big issue with Alien 3. You kill off the survivors from Aliens and then Ripley spends the whole movie dejected and wanting to die.
This one at least has an objective and has a Ripley who you can root for and who is proactive rather than spending the entire film being reactive. Plus I think the Betty crew are fun and much more relatable than anonymous bald headed, similar looking prisoners. I’d watch this one again over Alien 3 any day.

I think it captured Ripley's realization that she hit a no way out hole. Her mistake was to come back to that planet in the second movie. It's meant to be hopeless. Cause there's no hope. She knows she is dead. So the movie couldn't be fun, heroic, etc etc... That's what the encountering the aliens means = death. The first message the crew in the first mvoie received wasn't a cry for help. It was a warning, as ripley said . Meaning, stay away or you die. So yes... Dark...death....and "in space, no one can hear you scream".

Okay, so, I LOVE this movie. I watched it as a little 8yo kid and all the gore and mutations really both scared me and impressed me, like wow, that was the goriest most disgusting and visceral thing I think I ever watched in my life. As I got older, it only got better: I love the crew and cast of characters we are left with at the end, everyone plays of each other in such a fun way, I love how they can joke around here and there because come on, situation is grim enough, what else can we do. I LOVE the "new" Ripley, and how weird she is in this movie: as the previous clones suggested, during the process her human and alien DNA got mixed together, and we ended up with a very cold, weird, almost inhuman Ripley. I like how she struggles to remain human, how the aliens are calling to her (with the bit "I can feel it behind my eyes"), as it gives a little tiny glimpse of how aliens operate and what they feel without spelling it out - i love how subtle it is, with her smelling everything, getting distressed at the alien queen's pain, like, understanding it, feeling it too - really shows the idea of a hive mind (as with the white offspring at the end too - as she really felt it to be her child, and the pain she felt for killing it). And the effects, oh my god, the effects. I LOVE practical effects, and there's so much here - all the blood, and meat, and wrinkled skin and slime, and monsters, it's so good, so believable. Maybe it's because I find creatures with human features (haha, rhymed) really terrifying, but the white alien really got me - with human-like face, and puppy dog eyes, and how big it was. (not to mention its death scene - it's one thing to make it so the monster dies in one hit, or gets thrown away into space, but no - here we have a long agonising scene of it dying, with horrifying, almost human-like screams to boot), It also got me with the theme, which I find not many horror movies dabble into - reproduction horror and mutation. I watched many movies and never found one that gets this theme into such disgusting levels. The mutated clones, the human reproductive system in the alien queen, the newborn - it's the most literal showing of "mutation" I think I've seen in a movie. And it's not a glimpse, few seconds of screen time at the end, like many modern horror movies do, leaving "all the shocking revelations " on the screen for max 5 minutes - no - it goes on for a long, uncomfortable time. They really went all out with this, visually, without spelling things out more than it should be. Also people get creeped out by the scientist, who got kidnapped by the aliens during their escape - I love this guy. Such depravity with him being obsessed by the aliens, kissing the glass, just straight up admiring the specie - this actor really sold it - all of the actors did, really. I might be messed up in the head and I get why people call this movie a disaster and laughable attempt at aliens, but for me they made the aliens way more interesting in this one. Again, the first movie is a masterpiece of suspense, I had to learn to appreciate it (because at first I found it so boring and unewentful), and if I watched them both now, I'm sure I would love Alien much more than this one., but....here we are :D

In the Alien Movie Universe, the synthetic persons are introduced in alphabetical order: Ash, Bishop, Call and David. This movie is a fine movie, but a bit disappointing as an Alien film. However, there are good ideas and moments : Ripley DNA and Alien genetics mixed up, the Aliens learning about the red punishment button, Alien drones ripping up another drone in order to use the drone’s acidic blood to escape their cell, the horrific series of botched Ripley clones, the Betty crew hijacking sleeping colonists to act as Guinea pigs, the operating system of the Auriga being “Father”, as opposed to M/TH/R in Alien. Some things are silly: Ripley clone having acid blood, the silly looking “Newborn” alien, chestburster host using it to kill someone else, and some over use of bad CGI. Some problems with characterization - can’t sympathize or care about the Betty crew because they kidnapped and sold sleeping colonists. Also, for the third time in the series, an alien creature jumps aboard an escaping ship and we blow an Alien out into space in the final battle - an overused finale.

It was the second movie that made me a fan. An infestation, in much longer environment was much scarier and Ellen Ripley was an unusual hero. It showed that being maternal and scared doesn't make a person any less of a badass.
I used to own all 4 movies on DVD and watched all of the movies regularly. I didn't watch the 4th movie, Aliens Resurrection very often. I think that Aliens 3, wrapped the story up nicely and I didn't feel that there was much that could have been added.
The 4th movie is more of a gross out slasher than a scary monster movie. Bringing a person back from the dead, who has been completely incinerated, using DNA, is a trope that I saw used a lot in soap operas. It kicks me out of the story.
In the series, I think that the reason why the xenomorphs are preserved as a possible biological weapon for use in warfare. When the xenomorphs were resurrected, their genetic makeup included human DNA and wouldn't have been quite the same organism as the xenomorphs from the previous movies. Ellen Ripley's clone ( I'm using the word clone loosely ) had a genetic makeup that included alien DNA and wouldn't have been the same person as the woman who died in the 3rd movie. The "alien baby" had a connection with Ripley due to being genetically related. At least that is my take on it.
I don't think that the 4th movie was very good.

You kind of picked up on it, but the “Firefly vibes” with the crew of “The Betty” are basically my favorite part of this movie. Because in my opinion the characters are all kind of prototypes of the beloved characters in “Firefly”. You have a badass with a name traditionally for girls in Christy combine that with Perlman’s character’s general look and anti-social attitude and you get, Jayne. There is a quirky mechanical genius, a tough woman as the lieutenant, and also a captain who is smarter and nobler than he initially seems though not as much as Malcom of course. Then you have the Ripley clone, a strongly neurodivergent engineered super soldier woman. If you combine her with Ryder’s character a big browned eyed innocent he is much more than she seems, you basically get River.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. lol

I liked Winona in this, but then I was the right age to fall for her pretty hard when Beetlejuice came out, so... take my opinion on her with a grain of salt.
I also liked Sigourney as this version of Ripley who's coming to terms with being a hybridized science experiment with animal instincts, who just happens to have Ripley's memories. I enjoyed the sort of proto-Firefly-ness of the Betty's crew, as well, even if they aren't all particularly good people on the face of it.
However, I do not like gross, disgusting, stuff, and so the appearance of the alien baby, plus the scenes with the failed Ripley clones and the alien baby having its insides sucked out of the ship by the vacuum of space are a bridge too far for me.
There are also moments that, rather than feeling organic to the story, very much feel like the movie makers yelling "Hey, look at this! Wooo, Hollywood spectacle, am I right!?" The grenade spiraling down into the escape pod being one of them.
Ripley mercy-killing the other clone with the flamethrower does seem like a terribly painful way to go, when she could have done it quicker with a knife, but then you have to realize that the flamethrower was only used as a callback to the previous movies, not because it made the slightest bit of sense.
I don't think think any of the failures of this movie can be laid at the actors' feet.

As a former actor, l love this movie only to watch Sigourney Weaver’s performance. Her presence, even simply standing still, made everyone she acted with seem anemic. And that’s the point, I guess. Her technique and total submersion into being one of the aliens was so complete, no one else could stand their ground against her. You’ve heard the old saying, Acting is action and reaction. Her acting was so powerful, no one could react against her wall of intensity. Man, I sure would have loved the chance to try! Winona did fine, but she kept being Winona, and not letting herself go and release the killer android that she was intended to be. There were script problems that did not aid her in fully becoming that character, so not totally her fault. It also didn’t help Winona that Sigourney had full script control. That was how they lured her back for a fourth film. She originally said no but they dangled that carrot of full script approval in her face and she took it. Plus the millions. She took that, too.

I like that the Alien franchise was done by four critically acclaimed directors with very diverse techniques. It's interesting to see their own unique take on an alien movie.
I understand how fans of the franchise dislike this movie as it seemed very separate from the earlier ones. In my case, I saw Alien Resurrection before any other Alien films so I had zero expectations when it comes to the story or Ripley's character. Also, by the time I saw this movie, I already watched Delicatessen, Amelie and City of Lost Children, which made me aware of what to expect in terms of the director's style.
Not making excuses, but Jean-Pierre Jeunet is an auteur who is used to having complete creative control of his movies. He also has a permanent production crew and prefers to work with actors from his other films. Alien Resurrection was his first Hollywood production movie- and the first time where he wasn't allowed to change the script. Worse, back then, he only knew three English words and had to work with non French speaking cast and crew. Sadly, these struggles were evident in many parts of the movie. This is a far cry from the quality of his earlier movies, but I still enjoyed it a lot, especially the underwater scene (water is JPJ's thumbprint) and Ron Perlman shooting at an alien while hanging upside down. The Newborn is my favorite among all the aliens in the franchise. It had a unique, human like design (the only flesh colored, tail-less alien), and its eyes' resemblance to human ones made me feel for it, which made it even creepier.
Alien Res does not reflect Jeunet's creativity and talent as a storyteller. I encourage anyone who is curious enough to have a peek at Amelie (comedy drama) and Delicatessen (dark comedy). Highly recommended for those looking for a unique surreal treat for the senses.

Yeah. When we told you these two movies (3 snd 4) were absolute trainwrecks, did you think we were exaggerating?
Fun Fact: When pre-production was underway, the original 'Alien Queen' could not be located and the molds that were used to build the original were damaged beyond usefulness. Fortunately, the original life-size puppet was located in the personal collection of an avid Alien (1979) fan.
Bonus Fact: Sigourney Weaver signed on to the film largely because of one scene in particular, when Ripley 8 encounters her previous 7 aborted genetic incarnations. ...And the $11 Million helped too.

I actually really like this movie. I think it's a great cast. Two hundred years after the events of Alien 3, scientists on the space vessel USM Auriga create a clone of Ellen Ripley, named Ripley 8, using DNA from blood samples taken before her death. The Xenomorph queen's DNA has been combined with Ripley's, so the clone grows up with an embryo inside it. The scientists extract the embryo, raise it, and collect its eggs while keeping Ripley 8 alive for further study. As a result of the Alien's DNA inside her, the clone has enhanced strength and reflexes, somewhat acidic blood, and a psychic link with the Xenomorphs. Additionally, the Xenomorph's genetic memory allows the clone to have some of Ripley's memories. The body's in the tubes are just abducted human's. Probably homeless or criminals. The scientists want them to birth alien soldiers. Well no she didn't know there were 7 other clones so of course she didn't ask for them. The Alien Queen, through the mixing of the two species dna developed a uterus and gives birth to a Xenomorph with human traits. Unable to bond with the Queen, the hybrid Xenomorph recognizes Ripley 8 as its mother, so it kills the Alien Queen. I actually liked Ripley's character as much as the original, due to her merging with her nemesis...which I thought was a cool twist. Your squeamishness is not a fault of the movie, so I can't understand your complaints other than you just thinking it was gross...which it is...it's supposed to be. I also don't understand why you seem so confused as to why the corporation and military do these things that they do. They're the bad guys! Plain and simple. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out. They want all of the scientific benefits that come from obtaining these specimens and being able to study them and reap the rewards and prestige of being the ones to make the discoveries and gain the monetary and scientific benefits. Plus did I mention they are the bad guys. Not as good as the first two but I really liked this one as well.

This movie was unnecessary. Now, what certainly is different fornyou is that you never waited for a new alien movie. It was.nice going to the movies to watch a new alien movie, especially after Ripley died. The "baby" and the queen to have a womb were part of the experiment. Keep in mind they had 8 Ripleys. The "baby" was the first. They were certainly going to continue experimenting till they got to the point of having a perfect enhanced organism, as Ash said in the first movie. The womb meant they didn't have to use eggs and have humans impregnated. For me, rhe idea of the.movie makes total sense. It also shows rhat despite being gross, the "baby" had human feelings and didn't want to be a monster, so he immediately rejected the alien morher and went after Ripley. It was still a beast, in nature. And true, that was not Ripley. It was a copy, with alien DNA. You should also understand that there was a lot of discussion about cloning people when the movie came out . All the ethical dimension of this idea. Anyway, i think they ahould have kept it as a trilogy.

I figure they knew they couldn't make a movie that resembled the atmosphere for _Alien_ because you cannot do it better than Ridley Scott. And they wouldn't be able to make it as good as James Cameron either. Still, having Alien 3 as the wrap up felt really nasty, so I can imagine they would want to have at least some redemption for the saga.
Alien: Resurrection didn't try to take itself too serious and to me it feels more like a fanservice movie to wash away the poor taste of Alien 3. In that sense they did a pretty good job imho. It also helps that they have a pretty good cast and Josh Whedon usually manages to have a good mix of action and humor in his movies.

It seemed orders of magnitude worse in 1997, but in watching this reaction it actually seems very ahead of it's time. Like it was a circa 2023 attempt at a franchise reboot, it feels very "current year" in every way. I think Alien Resurrection fails because it is so painfully and aggressively 90s. 90s effects, attitude, cinematography, editing, direction and writing. Plus it’s an early example of Joss Whedon’s greatest weakness as a writer - confusing personality quirk with actual character development.
I can name specific characters in ALIEN, ALIENS and ALIEN 3 that I like and feel genuinely sad when they die, but no one in Resurrection - not even Ripley because she’s not the actual Ripley - gets an emotional response from me as an audience member.

The half I like, I like a lot such as Winona Ryder's Casting, the action, the chase in a claustrophobic setting. What I didn't like is subjective such as the casting of everyone else could've been better. Killing off the leader of the "bad guys" first trope I hate, a Xenomorphs spitting acid blood up a ladder was random as F' (No where in this franchise does a xenomorph have this power), the guy who's face was hit with the acid just falls to his death without even trying to shake a dead Xenomorphs corpse from his foot. Ripley having sex with an Alien (Her idea btw) and everything to do with that was weird in a bad way, not enough likable characters. Aliens had a lot of likable characters and that makes a huge difference. Everyone from Vazquez to even Hudson were likable. Alien 3/Resurraction/AVP/AVP2 all suffer from bad casting or not likable characters. Why do they want the aliens? Take a step back from film land and look at humanity's view on aliens in real life. Half of us swear they don't exist. So, there's the other half spending as much money and doing everything they can to prove they exist. So from the film's POV, if they found out if they had a human who died while pregnant with an alien (Ripley) and that if they cloned her they'd clone an alien too. They would definitely green light this and cover it up. I personally find it weird people watching these movies even bother to ask why the humans are actively trying to capture an alien.

Guy is awesome when given the right material (Child's Play, Exorcist 3, Star Trek: Voyager, unforgettable guest appearance on The X-Files). Same for Michael Wincott (Elgin) who was great as the villain in The Crow. Leland Orser and Raymond Cruz had also carried bigger movie or TV roles, It's like they went all out casting Alien : Resurrection, but the writer had no idea what to do with the cast. This movie could have been sooo much better than it was.

OH man, why does the end look like some sort of Alien/Ripley fan fic porn. All that licking and caressing.. The horror. Easily the worst of the franchise, but weirdly enough, I remember not thinking it was 'that bad' at the time. I get you on the 'rooting for Ripley because it's Ripley' and the 'why should i care cuz it's not Ripley.." definitely a plot conflict or issue when you really need someone to root for and you don't really have one.
Also, it's interesting that in the first film, the blood/gore were minimal and the 'scares' were from not knowing where the alien would be coming from at any given moment. This flick was chock full of aliens and went for the gross out route. I prefer the former method.

I would agree with that! I don’t dislike the plot point that newt and hicks are killed, but to do it essentially off screen is an undoing of plot rather than a progression.

I never got on board with this movie because I could never accept the premise that you could clone a pregnant woman with the embryo still intact. Science fiction or not. And for me the film could never rise above that absurdity. Still enjoyed your reaction, though!

i am about to say several thing that many will not like. first, i can't stand joss whedon. there are very few things he has touched that i like. second, i actually like alien 3 & 4. the hate they both get is undeserved. james cameron, another person i can't stand, turned a story driven sci fi film with thriller & horror elements, into the typical 80's/90's overblown action flick. so a return to more story driven films was not received well. also, the commentary written into them was a little heavy handed. 4 was to move the series from ripley to call. but between the bad reception the film received & winona's legal & personal troubles, the idea was scrapped. third, both films, especially 3, had too many cooks in the kitchen. ultimately it affected the final product. bonus, usually i would prefer directors/extended cuts. but for both of these films, i prefer the theatrical versions. they might not be the intended visions, but they are the most complete.

My opinion: this movie isn't a good Alien movie, but it would have been a good standalone sci-fi/horror movie. Well, if Jean-Pierre Jeunet hadn't been the director. He's not a bad director, but he's the wrong choice for this movie. The hybrid baby and the xenomorph queen's womb was all his idea. The movie is just pulling in too many directions.
That said, I actually like this one more than Alien 3. I've finally (reluctantly) accepted that Alien 3 is a *better made* movie, but that doesn't mean I *prefer* it. The Betty crew does have that Firefly-like camaraderie going for them, and I really like Distephano (the soldier who sides against the evil scientist) and Purvis (the guy with the chestburster on an egg timer). Johner is a shitty person, but I have a huge longstanding celebrity crush on Ron Perlman, so I mostly just ignore how shitty he is and admire the fact that he's played by Ron Perlman.
I... um... I'm not sure what Brad "Chucky" / "Grima Wormtongue" Dourif was doing, exactly. I can't fault him for it, the script is all over the place, he probably just decided "oh, it's one of *those* scripts, this calls for over the top scenery chewing". But I enjoyed his character the least.

I respect anyone who can come to a place to say 3 is a better movie while still enjoying 4 more. 👏

Should this movie have never existed? No. God no. Am I happy that it does? One thousand percent yes! It's like when garbage reaches peak perfection space trash in movie form.
