Known as the "Tenka Matsuri," the Kanda Matsuri is said to have been a boat festival until the middle of the Genna period. The festival was held annually until the Enpo era, when it was decided to hold the festival every other year in conjunction with the Sanno Festival (held at Hie Shrine in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), and since then it has been held every two years. Under the patronage of the Edo shogunate, a procession consisting of two portable shrines, around 45 floats (36 in number), a supplementary festival, and the Goyo Matsuri, paraded through the Uchikurinawa area of Edo Castle, and was visited by the Tokugawa shoguns and the shogun's kitchen staff. The festival has been one of the most famous festivals in Japan throughout the Edo period, and has been included among the "Three Great Festivals of Japan" and the "Three Great Festivals of Edo".
