Loved that they included the door scene. For reference they were trying to open a door, but due to crap rolls it just wasn't happening. Lockpicks didn't work. Spells didn't work. Strength checks to remove the lock didn't work. Trying to use a sword only resulted in damage being taken. Trying to find an alternative entrance failed. They eventually managed to get a decent roll, but it was about five minutes of nothing but failure. Thus the running joke that VM's true enemies are doors.

As far as the wealth of material, campaign 1 "Vox Machina" was 115 episodes approximately 4 hours each. The Briarwood arc is only episodes 24-38, that's this season of the animated show completely. IMO we have 3-4 seasons worth of material for Vox Machina before the story concludes. Campaign 2 "The Mighty Nein" is set about 25 years after Vox Machina and is 141 episodes of roughly 4 hours each. Maybe we'll get "The Legend of the Mighty Nein" someday. Campaign 3 is only 12 episodes in so far.
Holy shit, I didn't realize C2 was that long, genuinely. It makes sense since C1 only started being streamed mid-campaign, so the public side of it is gonna be shorter if both campaigns are about the same, but for some reason I had the (incorrect) intuition of C2 being shorter lmao
@@guiltriple the home game happened less often so I’m guessing that the number of actual game sessions are closer between C1 & C2 than it looks on paper.
The Mighty Nein are just begging to be animated, the diverse and colorfully exotic looks of the characters, Jester's habit of painting on things, the well described spells, the various environments... including plenty of underwater adventures... man... it would be BEAUTIFUL! The campaign does also have some great story arcs that would translate really well into a season of episodes with a bit of creativity. Which they have in spades. If they do, Matt HAS to play both Pumat and Essek. edit: and Orly.
Just for fun I did my own calculation of how long the full series could run including all of the parts that I consider essential and omitting everything else. I came up with approximately 5-6 seasons, though I'm sure there is a balancing act between producing content and not dragging things out. would suck to have a 6 season road map only to hit canceled after season 4.
@@guiltriple campaign one had at least 2 years of off stream content so I'm sure the number of episodes would be about the same if we had seen all of that too. Campaign 1 also went on for about 3 years if my math is correct.
They have just started their 3rd Campaign, and still going strong. As a Critter who watched the original campaign, their hitting the main plot points while also adding some changes, but so far I haven’t minded the changes. I also appreciate the nods to some of the jokes in the original campaign like how doors are Vox Machinas worst enemy.
TLoVM is more or less following the story of the original live stream campaign. They've changed some things, condensed parts, of course, and generally tightened the dramatic structure so that it works as a proper narrative. But all in all, the basic story is generally the same. For example, the part where Scanlan, Vax and Percy can't open a door happened in the original live show, but it was a door to a different building that served a different purpose in the story.
@@xilliaz we got two shout outs to that arc in episode 5 - the duergar and the bullette - and a mention of Gradim Greyspine in episode 3. but it seems they hadn't met Kima before episode 1 here, and the other beat - the horn - could be repurposed with something they find in Whitestone leading them across the Ozmit Sea
Oh man, not rolling the right way not leading to success. You have no idea, with that cursed back door they literally broke a lock picking set, spent two spells and one of them got hurt to open a single mundane door. It was a much longer scene, obviously, in the live stream and a much bigger funnier moment. It was nicely homaged here to keep the flow of the story, but that's one of those unforgettable moments that became a running joke in the campaign.
Pike is in her spiritual "Blindspot". Lol. Which is coincidentally the name of the show Ashley was filming in New York during the original campaign run of what would become Vox Machina.
The Sontaran comment got me, because Stonefell's voice actor Darren DePaul played one in a Dr. Who RPG game (Eric's TBD RPG) I really enjoyed. Taliesin Jaffe (Percy) was in a good chunk of that game too, and ho boy, was that a performance... Probably my second favorite character I've ever seen him play, after Percy.
It's an obviously condensed version of the story with pretty much all the narrative and dramatic beats from the stream in there with a few things moved around for narrative and dramatic reasons. For example the "YOU FOOL. YOUR SOUL IS FORFEIT! DIE! DIE! DIE!" line was spoken by Percy to a different character than the hapless carriage driver in the game but everyone's hair stood on end as No Mercy Percy was born so it got lifted up from there moved over here and if you'd not seen the stream you'd be none the wiser. And it's still extremely cool to see performed and animated in a version of how one had imagined it. You also see more of what happens outside of the party: Pike going to the temple, Deliliah casting the spell in the graveyard that summoned the shadows, the family invited to dine with the briarwoods etc are all perspectives that only ever existed inside Matt's DM notes until now if at all.
6:14 "Scanlan's idea has some merit." Also, 9:58 in the campaign, using a Sabertooth Tiger was Keyleths' go to combat Wild Shape, and was usually referred to as "Going Minxie!"
TLOVM isn't following beat by beat all the things with dice rolls from the campaign. But the general way of how things went are being shown with little changes here and there for visual and story effect.
The backdoor scene is a reference to the stream when the same 3 characters spent 12 real life minutes, 3 spells, took damage, and still failed to open a door. Truly iconic
That scene where Percy f***s that guy up, BEAUTIFULLY done. Really captured that 'enjoying revenge' moment when he blasted that sontaran ass looking guy - it even went a step farther by showing his face without the mask when he's taken over by that entity/power, whatever it is (dont tell me in any responses, I want to see it in the show). Very eager to see the story behind that
05:50 It's funny that you mention that he looks and sounds like a sontaran, Darin De Paul, the one who voices Kerrion Stonefell, played in a Dr Who ttrpg show and played a sontaran librarian
This story arc is going from something like 60 hours of table time down to about 6 screen hours. Just their first campaign would provide several seasons worth of this show. And they are on the 3rd campaign right now.
Travis said in one of the story interviews that it's about 35 hours of story for the Briarwood arc that they have to condense into this 12 episode season of just under 6 hours.
Good points, if the plot had started in a writers' room, they probably would have lost Archie this episode. That would have been the "best" narrative choice. But it's based on player choices and dice rolls instead.
Actually, the writers must have been the ones to add more importance to Archie. In the game, Archibald Desnay was the elderly former chancellor to Percy's father. There was no rescue scene and he wasn't Percy's childhood friend. They very well could have dropped him from the overall plot and combined his role with Keeper Yennen.
The bag Percy put his rifle into is a Bag of Holding, extremely common in D&D because adventuring parties will take a lot of insane crap around with them and they cant physically carry it all otherwise. Usually there is one bag for the whole team and one person is usually the designated bag holder, but a DM can be nice and give each member their own bag for all their stuff.
They're condensing WAYYYYY more than 4 hours into 30 minutes. Each episode of CR is 4 hours but there are over 100 episodes in the first campaign. They've already condensed and/or skipped over 120 hours of gameplay.
@@BarrengerFynar I definitely won't argue with that. I mainly just meant to bring their attention to the fact that the game is probably longer running than they think. Honestly, at the pace they're going, I'm guessing they could get 3 or MAYBE 4 more seasons out of campaign one. Then they have all of campaign two to pull from. And by the time they get that fair in, if they do keep going, campaign 3 will probably be wrapped up. If this show is successful enough, it could go as long as some anime.
The Briarwood arch only covers about 14 episodes of CR. Also, we lose A LOT of time, with the fact that a round of dice rolls is 6 seconds. So something like Scanbo, which is an epic 30 minutes, is about 60 seconds of action, if memory serves. Matt seems to have a good radar, and each story arch in the campaign fits roughly into a season
