@@14KShadow - I hope so! I still have mine (the manual Competition Pack) which I have babied since new (apart from 162mph on the autobahn - it has to be done). I might have to sell it soon, to make way for a Porsche 718 Spyder. I got tempted...
@TonyBrQ Hope you've still got it! Comp pack manuals are extremely rare here in the UK. Next year I should be in a good position to finally get an E90 (will need the 4 doors)
Hi Thomas, The camera was an ordinary consumer type HD camcorder (Canon) fitted with a 0.5x lens adaptor to get a sufficiently wide angle. The mount was supplied by B Hague (they have a website, UK based) and this attached the camera to the passenger side head restraint pillars. Having someone sit in the passenger seat does a great job of damping excessive vibration. Simple and very effective mount, with plenty of adjustment possibilities. Cost about £40 from memory. Enjoy!
@skierman64 Given that a quick lap of the Ring is really quite intensive physical and mental activity, turning the a/c off is a recipe for one very overheated driver. I tried it, it made no discernible difference to performance in the places where you might expect to see a difference (long uphill sections) and no overheating was evident. And thanks to having it on, I did not fall out of the car in a steaming heap after 2 laps...
Thank your for your advice Tony, unfortunately I haven't got any HD camcorder but only my GoPro and a EOS 550D for filming so i will do some further research for the best in-car-filming but your idea of attaching the cam to the passenger´s head restraint pillars sounds really nice!
@NurburgringFahrer Thanks for the nice comments. On the most recent Nordschleife training the instructor allowed me to lead the group (ahead of him) and this was definitely very thought provoking. Without the comfort of the instructor in front, choosing the right speed, braking, turn in points, line, everything becomes your own responsibility.....much more challenging! Especially Schwedenkreuz!!!
@ELPIRATA21 - haha, thanks for the compliment. No, I am not a pilot....just do a bit of low altitude flying, every so often! @ngkful - DSC was set to M-Track mode. The cars have the DSC "off" capability controlled by an under-bonnet switch, as BMW don't want to have too many people crashing their cars. The guy immediately in front was a BMW employee and he might have been allowed to turn off DSC altogether. He was also quite aggressive with his steering inputs.
LOL - me too, although when I started this BMW Driver Training thing, I did already have an E46 M3. Driving the E92 around the Ring like this definitely convinced me to buy it. Twice....
Tony B And once again, I'll be there in 2 weeks after a trackday at Spa too. This bloody M3/Ring thing is addictive. Been looking to replace it but struggling to find something that ticks all the boxes :-)
@Gianluca part 2 ....it uses high sample rate GPS to measure location, speed acceleration. there are some very useful tools on their website for analysing performance. you can also embed the data in videos, but I have not got around to doing it on this one, yet....
@bobdadog27 The brakes were fine at the end of the lap. It was only a moderately warm day and the E92 brakes are a lot better than those of the E46 M3, bigger and more fade resistant.
@ExeosZwei - no, you're not the only one! Although I am totally convinced of the benefits of DCT on a circuit, I much prefer the involvement of the manual transmission everywhere else. So much so that I have just ordered a new M3 Competition Spec coupe - with the manual transmission
@HectorHTC Nobody said DCT was not "better". I have driven DCT M3's many times and would always choose this transmission for serious track work. On the road, I much prefer manual, however, as every gearchange becomes an event, requiring planning, timing, skill to execute perfectly. DCT just requires the flick of a paddle.
1. Nice driving it is harder to follow, you need to predict the breaking habits of those ahead and get to the accelerator at the right time. Really hard to stay close at the tight ones. I find the apexes easier to follow close. I love to pass on the tight ones though especially when I have space to take the inside of the corner first and put my bumper ahead of the other guy before the straight. It aggreviates them but you are not there to make friends... 2. I have a manual which I love to drive daily but I admit that at the track the paddle shifters are faster, smarter and more intuitive. Hands down the same driver does better time with the paddles than with the manual. I still put my money on the three pedal car though which I love for its v8 sound and pure steering. It is the last great m3 before the new playstation version. 3. I know this was just training i love the way you took your lines; just around 4.50" you seemed a bit relaxed but you are a really good driver. Enjoy your toy and when you don't have to follow someone beat that 8.30" you deserve it.
@gewow Panasonic HD camcorder (I forget which model, sorry), fixed to the passenger seat head-restraint posts, via a B. Hague camera mount. Also used a 0.5x wide angle add on lens.
@thooke222 Pretty close, but probably still got all 4 wheels on the ground - just. Speed is near enough 150mph at that point and the car does feel very light going over the crest. You have to wait and wait for it to come down before braking for the next turn. Quite nerve-wracking....
@eraserke - I assume you are joking with the comment about karts (a smiley might be a good idea). The "new transmissions" comment was certainly very funny....
Impressive, 8'17". Your entire group must have been very good. My experience has been that most groups lap BTG in the 9's as the instructors need to keep the group together. I got two solo laps with the instructor and had I charged the Gantry instead of slowing I might have done an 8'35" lap. I tip my hat to you. Next time earlier turn-ins and DCT in S mode.
Hey Tony! Can you please tell my how you shot this video? I plan a similar video so i´m interested in which cam you used (gopro?) and how you mounted it in the M3 for this great results. Thanks for your quick answer ;)
hi man, can you please tell me what's the device mount on the left of your window? i already see it in some drag videos. could you give me some information?(name, where to buy etc). congratulation for your videos, check mine. ;)
@visceralpleura - just what is "normal" understeer, and it what circumstances would you experience this "normal" level. Please, enlighten me with your expertise...
Brilliant Lap, very impressive! Two questions, do you own a m3 e92? :D And in front of you, the black bmw doesnt look like an m3 coupe. Is it the m3 sedan or a 335i?
@TonyBrQ Ah, so student-led laps are possible. I'd heard this but I gather it is rather uncommon. I hope to have such an opportunity but as you point out it puts things into a whole different perspective. Following is a bit of a cheat, leading on the other hand... Back to the 'Ring in May I hope.
Mh ... when I would be able to race the ring like this, then I would not need a Driver Training session because I would improve my capabilities by myself. Pretty impressiv driving.
When its 27 degrees ambient, I do. Anyway, with Efficient Dynamic the aircon compressor cuts out under full throttle so there is no negative impact. I just manage to keep a lot cooler...
Sometimes more, especially on hot days. We were seeing 125+ at times, and eventually the ECU will take over and upshift to 7th gear if this goes on for too long. When this happened, it was probably due to the oil level being below maximum.
Am I the only one who prefers manual transmission over flappy pedals? Everyone seems to drive flappy pedals nowadays. A manual gives me a far more personal connection with the car, if you know what I mean.
@TonyBrQ I bet u are still driving a go kart paid by ur parents...those new transmissions rule when u have any feeling with a car u just simply agree to that :)...of course the ferrari starting from the F430 transmissions are better but the money for those is too...
Oh Luis, you dunce. You clearly have no clue. Most of that lap was above 6500rpm and if you look you can see the shift lights (you do know what shift lights are don't you? Maybe not...) coming on amber, then red, frequently, which means I am shifting up at 8300rpm. You have probably never been anywhere near an E92 M3, nor the Nordschleife, so your opinion is worth rather less than squat. Stick to your bicycles.
Shut up people just say manual is better bla bla bla, shut up u r just trying to say u drive good, but everyone knows that DCT transmissions are better, faster, also tive the car an awesome sound when shifting
the ultimate driving machine
Best M model of the 21st century
Watching it again 8years later
Lol...why did you wait so long..? ;-) I have view stats to mantain, you know!
@Tony B Hahaha I wanted to savour it.
Next time I message I'll reply that I have my own E92

@TonyBrQ Actually the A/C compressor is designed to disengage under full engine load, so it wont slow down the car..

Great driving, and what a car...
LMFAO @ end of lap "8:17!!!!"
Absolutely brilliant lap - I really enjoyed that. Would love to have some driver training at the 'ring.
@TonyBrQ Thank you sir! That's why it sounded so proper compared to some other setups. Damn, haha I wanted an easy solution!
Thanks again.
much respect. you are a talented and well taught driver!!

@gridm3 and rick nick - this is BMW Driver Experience training, available via the BMW corporate website

Looks awesome.

Tony B Funnily enough I was there on Monday :-)
Tony B and an E36 Evo before;-)
Absolutely, Rory. That was where the obsession all began. How are you and how is the car going?

@gueffel - thanks for the comment. yes I do have an E92 M3, and its great that the Nords

Thanks - I was working my ermm....socks off for that lap!
The place is addictive, so beware, once you do it, the addiction becomes quite expensive....
Good lap, wish I could experience this.

Hi there, excellent driving! I am preparing for NS myself and would like to know which camera did you use?? Thanks

Smooth ride! nice :)

wow did the m3 in front catch air at 2:04?!
@visceralpleura - just what is "normal" understeer, and it what circumstances would you experience this "normal" level. Please, enlighten me with your expertise...
Hey Tony which school is this? Is there a website? Thanks for sharing this video with us. Great driving.

I probably would turn off the air conditioner on the track to aid in engine cooling and avoid zapping hp. This driver has the AC on.
I can do that.. Where can i apply i need work private cotract please
Yess babyyybbeee that's why I bought an M3 sedan ;)
Nice driving smoother than the guy in front.
Nice driving. Must be nice to be only ones on track.
Choo choo - make way for the M-Train

THat sounds.
How reliable is the dct m3 compared to the smg e60 m5?
I have no real direct experience of the E60 SMG (driven 3 over about 50 miles total) but I would say that DCT in the M3 is much more reliable.
Who drives the NS with the AC on??
When its 27 degrees ambient, I do. Anyway, with Efficient Dynamic the aircon compressor cuts out under full throttle so there is no negative impact. I just manage to keep a lot cooler...
whats ur engine temperature doing when fast lapping? around 105-110? or more?
Sometimes more, especially on hot days. We were seeing 125+ at times, and eventually the ECU will take over and upshift to 7th gear if this goes on for too long. When this happened, it was probably due to the oil level being below maximum.

Lets see a c63 do that without crashing
I'll take the manual thanks.
It's not normal for an M3 to have that much understeer.
Low rev driver in Nordschleifer... This guys should take some diving lessons...
