It seems strange to us, but dogs can actually gain a lot of information about each other by sniffing another dog’s rear end or genital area.
Dogs, who are heavily scent-driven creatures, sniff each other’s crotch and rear end areas to gather information related to the other dog’s identity, health, and emotional state.
Research has shown that a dog’s sense of smell is between 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than that of a human. Amazingly, for every 1 scent receptor that we have, a dog has about 50!
