  • Blindboy is an Irish podcaster, author and musician.
In his most recent short story collection, 'Topographia Hibernica', he uses an ancient Roman colonial document used to subjugate the Irish people as inspiration for a tale that honours the human, animal and emotional geography of Ireland.
Blindboy sat down with Ash to talk about Eminem, Israel and Palestine and why cats are magical.
Novara Live broadcasts every weekday from 6PM on UA-cam and Twitch.
Episodes of Downstream are released Sundays at 6PM on UA-cam.

I am absolutely one of those people right now! 😆
Just over 3/4 through and loving it, and definitely going to be seeking out more from Blindboy (like his podcast)!
I’m finding the plastic bag really disconcerting though… not because his face is covered, but because the orange/red shapes and text are doing a number on my brain, in a jarring visual over-stimulation way.
I’ve tried turning off the screen and just listening, and while I listen to and enjoy a lot of purely audio podcasts, something about knowing this was filmed as a video podcast makes it really hard to purposefully look away. Also, while the majority of his face is covered, Blindboy has incredibly expressive eyes, and I don’t *want* to look away.
I’m also an autistic person (AuDHD) of a similar age (and also diagnosed as an adult), and I absolutely understand the desire not to be “observed” or recognised… I’m not sure what my point is here exactly, but my own discomfort in no way detracts from how interested and eager I am to hear more from him ❤

Yet, this young'un with a bag on his head, prompted by an extremely insightful other young'un, made me fully understand, both, and throughout history, the meaning and the importance of "creating instability". It has been and remains a powerful tool. Until watching this segment I only understood it as something that created an uneasy, amorphous feeling with no name. Thank you young people. As a middles aged woman I had a young Asian woman in her twenties, so didn’t feel very confident because of age difference & life experience.
But she changed my life helped me off of anti depressants helped me realise that what I was going through was grief, one of my children had leukaemia for 25 years since 3 years old. So I know one day I’ll loose her, but she taught me how to cope with grief & with things I can’t control.
Think many people cannot bare the lack of control we have over our lives.

I also feel that lack of affinity as someone black but I experience it from Arabic people, South East Asians and Asian people . What happened was slavery was industrialised during the Enlightenment Age. They had a problem; how can we promulgate universalism whilst denying Black people equality?
Their answer was to dehumanise black people and say we have low IQs and we're less than human. Because white colonialism was global they spread this hierarchy everywhere they went. Which is why Arabs, Indian people and South East Asians feel superior to black people and have contempt for black people, which is why I find ethnic minorities screaming black lives matter so hollow because I think 'yea until someone black wants to marry your sister'.
Whenever I bring it up other minorities try to pacify me with 'its cultural'. Bollocks; there are loads of black muslin men married to Arabic and Asian when that get nothing but shit. It angers me because black people didn't invade china and force opium on the people, black people didn't partition India, black people didn't sign the Sykes-Picot agreement and yet all of these ethnic groups have taciturn scorn for black people and are all arse kissy with white people; its repulsive.
Ethnic minorities need to deal with their internal bigotries that they are in total and utter denial about; sick of it!
Its true what he says about Irish and Jamaican accents; we drop our T's and R's in the same places [see Bill Bryson- Mother Tongue]

Blind boy helped me so, so much. He obvs doesn’t know that.. I listened to his podcast whilst recovering from narcissistic abuse. His episode “Creaking Ditch Pigeon” & the series he made round it taught me a lot about mental health & his approach to it. He’s an extremely knowledgeable & gentle soul. Transactional analysis saved my life!! Thank you BlindBoy ❤

      What is transactional analysis?

@@wunderdoggy hey sorry for my delay in replying. TA is a form psychoanalysis, dealing specifically with mental health issues around identity disturbances, normally brought on by childhood & interactions with others that caused trauma in our lives. It allows us to look at our “ego states” in transactional situations (talking to each other) plus it identifies lots of other types of transactions that may be getting employed by others, for some sort of gain (emotional, psychological, financial etc) it’s fantastic as it can be used retrospectively and be very revealing about ourselves and others. Hope that helps 🙏

Why is there anything wrong with helping homeless people in order to make yourself feel less bad? Surely empathy and conscience are good things?
Unless you mean it in a different way, maybe as in helping them because it makes you think like you're a really great person? Because in the second example it's very self focused, and the predicament of the homeless person becomes secondary or even unimportant, which would make the action selfish, but in the first example, I don't think that's the case at all. You feel bad for them because you actually give a shit, and if it's soothing for you to improve their day in some way, then it is not really self centred...

I think you have that the wrong way round.
The UK has taken responsibility for Empire far more than other European Nations have, England especially.
Irish and Scots look to put all blame for Empire onto the English. James I, for example, was an absolute monster.
Even now, there are those Europeans that believe being part of a powerful National collective fail to see the oppression that collective projects.

regards the question of dehumanisation : it is a characteristic behavioural reactionary strategy in every hierarchy of Wealth and Power culture ever studied. Unknown in Egalitarian cultures. Turn ordinary people against other ordinary people.
The whole point of Israel as a British Empire long term strategy was two fold - prevent the emergence of Arab Socialism sitting on all that Oil reserve by inserting aggressive colonial entity with expansionary ideology in to and upon Arab inhabited land.
Using Religious fundamentalism to justify it, European persecution of Jews to rationalise it, pretending it was a civilising project to build a new democracy. The planning for this started before WWI, and was completed soon after, and the seeds of violence were sown. Seeds that root deep in people's psyches, deeds that uprooted a people from their home.
Arab Socialism must not be permitted to progress through to legislative authority, let alone allowed to develop industrially, as the economic policy of independent Arab states.
Its not that they feared an Arab militarism - it was that they coveted the Oil and feared Arab Socialism. That's why they took out Gadaffi. Global South Socialisms are not the same as European Socialisms... they are more practical, less theoretical.

I feel like it was a much weirder experience realizing that I was no longer sexually attracted to teenagers in my early 20s than the “waiting for her to turn 18” vibe. I feel like it was a very narrow window where I was legitimately thirsting for jailbait. Men will always look, because butts and boobs are nice to look at, but there comes a point where the childlike face of a 16-17-18yo girl is a turnoff.
