Blindboy On Israel & Palestine, Eminem and Why Dogs Don't Exist | Ash Sarkar Meets Blindboy

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Blindboy is an Irish podcaster, author and musician.
In his most recent short story collection, 'Topographia Hibernica', he uses an ancient Roman colonial document used to subjugate the Irish people as inspiration for a tale that honours the human, animal and emotional geography of Ireland.
Blindboy sat down with Ash to talk about Eminem, Israel and Palestine and why cats are magical.
Novara Live broadcasts every weekday from 6PM on UA-cam and Twitch.
Episodes of Downstream are released Sundays at 6PM on UA-cam.

the funniest thing about Blindboy being introduced to a new audience is the utter confusion from them about the plastic bag while he speaks on philosophical and political subjects
Yeah asking myself that right now :D what is it about?
@@caro1606 he's apart of a comedy duo called the Rubberbandits, he explains that he wears the plastic bag for anonymity because he suffers from anxiety and does not want to be recognized or bothered in public
@@caro1606 He's always valued the privacy it affords him, but since his Autism diagnosis he says it doubles as a rejection of neurotypical behavioural expectations.
I am absolutely one of those people right now! 😆
Just over 3/4 through and loving it, and definitely going to be seeking out more from Blindboy (like his podcast)!
I’m finding the plastic bag really disconcerting though… not because his face is covered, but because the orange/red shapes and text are doing a number on my brain, in a jarring visual over-stimulation way.
I’ve tried turning off the screen and just listening, and while I listen to and enjoy a lot of purely audio podcasts, something about knowing this was filmed as a video podcast makes it really hard to purposefully look away. Also, while the majority of his face is covered, Blindboy has incredibly expressive eyes, and I don’t *want* to look away.
I’m also an autistic person (AuDHD) of a similar age (and also diagnosed as an adult), and I absolutely understand the desire not to be “observed” or recognised… I’m not sure what my point is here exactly, but my own discomfort in no way detracts from how interested and eager I am to hear more from him ❤
@@jamielockdown thanks for the explanation ☺️
Blindboy is a real breadth of fresh air in this crazy world
Just now: Walla Isreali Agency reports that all camera recordings installed on the separation wall with Gaza, intended for the investigation committee examining the October 7 events, have mysteriously disappeared.
This is the crossover I’ve been looking for

If anyone doesnt know Blindboy and is just learning about him. Go listen to his podcast. It is absolutely fantastic and gives the best "podcast hugs" (his coined term) out there!
'To learn to sit with someone else's tears made me an adult.' Something worth striving for at any age.
Unreal. A convergence of legends. Can't wait.
¨History as empathy through time.¨ I LOVE that! Looking at it that way rather than just dry meaningless dates and numbers might just encourage us to make sure we learn from it so much more deeply in order to figure out how to behave with dignity, decency and equality for everyone in real time. Wouldn´t that be great?! Actually, I loved all of this fabulous broadcast. Thank you so much.

The list of war crimes from colonial Britain is truly horrific, difference is that we appears to still have pride in the brutal murderous colonials!!
Where as other European countries appear to have got over that horrible part of our history.
Only Germany has confronted its history and it was forced to do so through occupation. Germany now has internalised guilt which has lead to unwavering support for Israel so I’m not so sure they’re an example most Leftists on Novara would want Britain to follow.
@harrypmay Even then, Germans have seldom reflected upon their colonial actions in Africa, it is mostly confined to Europe, which again reinforces colonial assumptions.
personally i think its pretty pointless dwelling on wrongs from centuries ago
Which European empire has gotten over it?
I’m no supporter of the British, but the right wing in Spain, France and Portugal are no less proud of their colonization projects.

@@harrisonb6104i couldn’t agree with you more, his podcast is superb. It should get far more attention than it currently does.
Surely intelligent people can get their messages out well under 40 hours !
One podcast series beyond 1 hour on certain topics calls into question the editing and the waffling .
true but blindboy is the king of waffling and i coukd listen to him waffle all day ahahaha@@gavintuesday4959

Palestinians have the RIGHT TO DEFEND THEMSELVES!!!
Yes they do. They don't have the right to murder, rape, and kidnap women and children.
Israel has the right to defend itself. It doesn't have the right to shell innocent civilians, even if Hamas is hiding among them.
Palestine needs to reject Hamas
Israel needs to reject Netanyahu
This was a cool conversation, always love blindboy’s enthusiasm for understanding people and the world

He's a hero in Ireland for years
@@NurturePalettePlayASMR I have started his podcasts, they’re enlightening.
I'm so old that I have trouble remembering exactly how old I am. Yet, this young'un with a bag on his head, prompted by an extremely insightful other young'un, made me fully understand, both, and throughout history, the meaning and the importance of "creating instability". It has been and remains a powerful tool. Until watching this segment I only understood it as something that created an uneasy, amorphous feeling with no name. Thank you young people. You won't fully understand how much hope you gives us elders until you are both unable to recall exactly how old you are.
I love to see comments like this on novara videos! A diverse set of ages in an audience is always a good sign, and it’s cool to share appreciation of these interesting conversations with people much older and much younger :)

I was in a waiting room full of people waiting for therapy.
As a middles aged woman I had a young Asian woman in her twenties, so didn’t feel very confident because of age difference & life experience.
But she changed my life helped me off of anti depressants helped me realise that what I was going through was grief, one of my children had leukaemia for 25 years since 3 years old. So I know one day I’ll loose her, but she taught me how to cope with grief & with things I can’t control.
Think many people cannot bare the lack of control we have over our lives.
2 years later heard my name called & it was this special woman who’d changed my life running towards be to give me a hug ♥️made me realise that many of these people have a depth of care & understanding, that’s astonishing! Amazing wonderful people♥️✊♥️

Ive been listening to blindboy since 2017,and i can safely say he is the most trustworthy and realistic social commenter of the left ive ever laid ears on. The dude helped me understand the world in dark times (brexit, covid etc) and helped my understand the way my mental helath!
I've often listened to his podcast and the way he puts my mind to ease about things like anxiety and human behaviour has brought tears to my eyes
I also feel that lack of affinity as someone black but I experience it from Arabic people, South East Asians and Asian people . What happened was slavery was industrialised during the Enlightenment Age. They had a problem; how can we promulgate universalism whilst denying Black people equality?
Their answer was to dehumanise black people and say we have low IQs and we're less than human. Because white colonialism was global they spread this hierarchy everywhere they went. Which is why Arabs, Indian people and South East Asians feel superior to black people and have contempt for black people, which is why I find ethnic minorities screaming black lives matter so hollow because I think 'yea until someone black wants to marry your sister'.
Whenever I bring it up other minorities try to pacify me with 'its cultural'. Bollocks; there are loads of black muslin men married to Arabic and Asian when that get nothing but shit. It angers me because black people didn't invade china and force opium on the people, black people didn't partition India, black people didn't sign the Sykes-Picot agreement and yet all of these ethnic groups have taciturn scorn for black people and are all arse kissy with white people; its repulsive.
Ethnic minorities need to deal with their internal bigotries that they are in total and utter denial about; sick of it!
Its true what he says about Irish and Jamaican accents; we drop our T's and R's in the same places [see Bill Bryson- Mother Tongue]

Blind boy for Taoiseach 🇮🇪
Blindboy is so insightful and vulnerable, he just delivers information in such a relaxed, open and thoughtful way. I liked that he spoke about autism too.
I remember listening to him talking about accidentally dressing like Eminem in one of his podcasts. Blindboy’s just really relatable and he actually encourages people to go out and learn things, whether it’s history, politics, art etc. He’s just himself, really funny and creative. Such a cool guy.
Blind boy helped me so, so much. He obvs doesn’t know that.. I listened to his podcast whilst recovering from narcissistic abuse. His episode “Creaking Ditch Pigeon” & the series he made round it taught me a lot about mental health & his approach to it. He’s an extremely knowledgeable & gentle soul. Transactional analysis saved my life!! Thank you BlindBoy ❤
What is transactional analysis?
@@wunderdoggy hey sorry for my delay in replying. TA is a form psychoanalysis, dealing specifically with mental health issues around identity disturbances, normally brought on by childhood & interactions with others that caused trauma in our lives. It allows us to look at our “ego states” in transactional situations (talking to each other) plus it identifies lots of other types of transactions that may be getting employed by others, for some sort of gain (emotional, psychological, financial etc) it’s fantastic as it can be used retrospectively and be very revealing about ourselves and others. Hope that helps 🙏

Why is there anything wrong with helping homeless people in order to make yourself feel less bad? Surely empathy and conscience are good things?
Unless you mean it in a different way, maybe as in helping them because it makes you think like you're a really great person? Because in the second example it's very self focused, and the predicament of the homeless person becomes secondary or even unimportant, which would make the action selfish, but in the first example, I don't think that's the case at all. You feel bad for them because you actually give a shit, and if it's soothing for you to improve their day in some way, then it is not really self centred...
It's still weird to me seeing him wearing a JC's Supermarket bag being that I knew JC and grew up in Swords where that supermarket was an institution and JC's bags are a huge part of growing up in Swords in the 90's .... nowhere near Limerick I might add!

Blindboy is such an insightful and brilliant communicator. I could listen to him speak for hours.
This really did go all over the place, yet I felt each topic was discussed with nuance and insight. What an incredible interview *yet again*.
Ah brilliant! Two heroes 🥰 I did wonder a few weeks ago when Aaron kept making those grossly incorrect statements about what the Brits did in Ireland, and BB said on his podcast that British folks in the media were still clueless about that part of their history if he was talking about Novara. Tuning in late here, I don't suppose they've addressed that at all?
YES HAHA he's directly quoting the bs he said twice right now 😂 thank you BB! I love Novara so much and I'm so glad to see this corrected!
What did he say? Was it in a video?
I think you have that the wrong way round.
The UK has taken responsibility for Empire far more than other European Nations have, England especially.
Irish and Scots look to put all blame for Empire onto the English. James I, for example, was an absolute monster.
Even now, there are those Europeans that believe being part of a powerful National collective fail to see the oppression that collective projects.
Ireland and Scotland have different histories
Incredibly insightful and interesting discussion here. I really enjoyed this.
regards the question of dehumanisation : it is a characteristic behavioural reactionary strategy in every hierarchy of Wealth and Power culture ever studied. Unknown in Egalitarian cultures. Turn ordinary people against other ordinary people.
The whole point of Israel as a British Empire long term strategy was two fold - prevent the emergence of Arab Socialism sitting on all that Oil reserve by inserting aggressive colonial entity with expansionary ideology in to and upon Arab inhabited land.
Using Religious fundamentalism to justify it, European persecution of Jews to rationalise it, pretending it was a civilising project to build a new democracy. The planning for this started before WWI, and was completed soon after, and the seeds of violence were sown. Seeds that root deep in people's psyches, deeds that uprooted a people from their home.
Arab Socialism must not be permitted to progress through to legislative authority, let alone allowed to develop industrially, as the economic policy of independent Arab states.
Its not that they feared an Arab militarism - it was that they coveted the Oil and feared Arab Socialism. That's why they took out Gadaffi. Global South Socialisms are not the same as European Socialisms... they are more practical, less theoretical.
F... Your downstream discussions I've a horse outside - that song is still a banger.
Very interesting chat
I just don't understand why life or our societies don't churn out a majority of intelligent, funny, and empathetic people like these two. Why is this too much to ask or too difficult to achieve?
I think i just fell in love when he was talking about what it is to be an adult, instead of a man, and his interpretation of good mental health and the importance of vulnerability. Absolutely spot on 🤌 what a great mind! This level of emotional intelligence is hugely admirable and very attractive 😅❤️❤️❤️

I feel like it was a much weirder experience realizing that I was no longer sexually attracted to teenagers in my early 20s than the “waiting for her to turn 18” vibe. I feel like it was a very narrow window where I was legitimately thirsting for jailbait. Men will always look, because butts and boobs are nice to look at, but there comes a point where the childlike face of a 16-17-18yo girl is a turnoff.
