Thank you so much. I just got an MFA in creative writing. It’s not easy trying to find a job in this field (especially because of my experience level, location and lack of network). Im in the process of creating a black owned production company that can provide opportunities for people like me. Much love and respect ✊🏾
I wrote my first screenplay before ever taking a class in film school. I used books I bought and it came out pretty good for someone w no idea what I was doing. After film school, where I only took one screenwriting class, I knew I still had a lot to learn. After watching this video, two things I see I need to do is 1) join a writer's group, 2) network. This is a glimpse into what a writer's world looks like. I'm currently hot on the trail of a 30-yr retirement after which I hope to get back into entertainment. I hope by then I've filled all my squares and can maybe secure a spot in a writer's room. Good luck to all!
So I think it's peculiar that @RosesAndLyrics is posting replies on many of the comments on this video asking for email info to network. Sounds 🐟-y, no?
Ah I'm a film student from Dallas!!! Screenwriting has definitely become my favorite and pitching is hard asf, but she totally broke everything down in a down-to-earth realistic way! Thank You!
Thank you so much! Love that you break down what goes into a general meeting, and the difference between managers and agents. These tips are super helpful
From my childhood, I was dreaming about becoming a screenwriter. I participated in several contests while studying in school and at university. Although I always knew what I want to do, I got Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Engineering. Currently, I feel like I am doing the wrong thing with my life, because it does not make sense to me when people know what they love, though do something very different. This video is the first tiny step towards my dream. I would love to have friends who love screenwriting as much as I do. Please leave a comment if you want to become a part of my network! :) Also good luck to everyone! I know you can do it!
I am in the same position. All I ever wanted to do when I was growing up was be a writer. I’d write sequels to my favorite movies, and turn my favorite tv shows into fiction novels lol. My dad worked at the school Drumline was filmed at and he sent me a copy of the script, which I carried everywhere. But the older I got I let outside influences talk me into having a “real” job with security and benefits. So I majored in business and now I’m miserable at my current job and my health is flipped upside down because of it. It’s not too late for us, timing is everything and it’s time!
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. The information is actually INFORMATIVE as opposed to many, many others I've come across. Thank you so much Amy for taking the time to share so much of your knowledge ad know how with us here. You are all loved and adored!
Thank you so much for these thoughts and insights. I’m considering transitioning to a career in writing and these have been some very timely and crucial lessons for me. Thanks again.
Writing is a SERIOUS PASSION of mine! My DREAM JOB would be writing for one of the CBS TV daytime dramas! Oh YEAH, I would LOVE doin' that! How does that work? I assume there are writers who write the daily teleplays while others write the character dialog. I also guess that knowing something about psychology would help ENHANCE your writing skills?
There are so many nuggets in this that you have to watch it multiple times. I think it would be great if you were discussing this topic also from a board. Regardless, there are great points. Thank you.
I don't subscribe to many (any) UA-cam channels, but I felt, as eluded to in @91toinfinity's comment, that Issa Rae uses basic, everyday language (no technical terminology) to explain her suggested approach. I am a great judge of character; Issa's demeanor is warm and genuine. Unlike many instructional videos, where it feels like an instructional video (you'd think it should, after all), in this particular video clip I completely forgot it was intended for the masses because it really felt like she was addressing me directly (or was she?), which, in turn, led to me hanging on her every word. I am a firm believer in people being who they are, rather than pretentious and fake. That is what prompted my subscription to her channel. Thank you, Issa Rae. I found this very informative.
YOUKNWBRANDON Amy answered in the video, the representation will find you. I think it’s important to find professional writers or script editors to read your work and enter competitions - agents and managers are either judging finalist entries or will know someone who is a judge. This is what my strategy is, the right reps will find me buy also I’m working on visualising who my ideal manager and agent will be.
Screencraft and The Script Lab has a list of agencies, boutique (small) and major, on their website. That would be a start...they also give advice on how to snag one.
I don't think you need to move to LA to start. You can start anywhere. Also she talks in the video about doing the work and the agent will find you! Make sure you check out the full video by becoming a patron.
To everyone reading this Jesus loves you sm that He died for you! I pray you surrender to Him! Have a blessed day!! You’re so loved 💖💖 He is a God of free will and will only come in if you invite Him! Experience His love today, just say “ Lord Jesus right now i give you my life! This is awesome. Read the scripts of your favorite movies, learn about story writing and write...oh and finish writing too.
This is amazing 🤯 I love how she dug into the questions and gave real step-by-step answers instead of surface-level information!

Her mini goals for the room are soooo real. I def did this my first few months in a room cuz I was soooo scared 😂😂
she's really dropping a lot of gems, this is the content pushing me over the edge to check the patreon prices... aaand wow is that reasonable, i'm in
How do you contractually make sure the people you’re meeting don’t try and steal your ideas?
Get your copyrights or trademarks in order. Keep memos on meetings.
Thank you so much! Love that you break down what goes into a general meeting, and the difference between managers and agents. These tips are super helpful
A vessel of knowledge i like "the note behind the note" you can even apply it to life in general.

Thank you so much Amy for your gracious sharing...this is so helpful! You're making the entertainment industry a better place for everyone.
Also I wanted to ask: what kind of pre-representation work did you do? Can you work in a writers' room without an agent/manager?
Thanks for the tea sis!
