Born Marina Lambrini Diamandis on the 10 October 1985, Marina’s birthplace wasn’t exactly the typical sort of place you would expect a young girl who knew she wanted to be mega-famous ever since she was 9 to be birthed in. She was born in the sunny mining valley of Brynmawr, Wales which had a population of less than 5,000 and moved immediately to the even more remote Abergavenny in the village of Pandy which had a population of less than 400. Lucky, she wasn’t to be alone and grew up with an older sister, as well as a free spirited Welsh mother and a strict, academic, conservative Greek father. Her parents split when she was only 4 her father packing off to Greece and eventhough he would try to visit Marina and her sister whenever he could (which with 90s plane prices wasn’t a lot) Marina has recalled missing her father throughout her childhood and his absence affecting her quite a lot.
Nonetheless, she still experienced a “simple and happy” childhood, her mother not having a lot but still loving and treating her children whenever she could. Luckily, Marina wasn’t a girly girl and didn’t need a lot of expensive clothes and accessories, instead spending most of her time with boys outside, playing football and wearing Manchester United shirts. However, this early friendship with boys wouldn’t last and would only worsen her social alienation problems connecting with girls. She was already a bit of an outsider: Part of it is I’m half Greek and I’ve moved around a lot and - maybe the other half is that I’m a weirdo! But her problems connecting with girls would worsen her social situation, MARINA only finding friendship with females in her early 20s.

I'm forever salty that Marina never blew up as much as her other peers did because she really did deserved more with her talent and creativity!
Her music versus her very poppy performances dont really sync. That could be something people just cant connect to. I was flabbergasted she was this Britney Spears poppy performer compared to the music she makes. I dont know, I still listen to her music but not interested in her performances.

I’ve been following her since 2013 and Electra Heart means so much to me. She was the soundtrack of my teenage years with that breathtaking aesthetic and electro-pop production. She’s grown so much and you can tell by the content of her following albums. I love her and I’m really excited for her upcoming album.

Marina is so important to me, her album “Electra Heart” came out around the time I was struggling with eating disorders and that body of work really helped me love myself and get through that tough time. Due to that I got “Love Is Evol” tattooed on my left arm to resemble that time in my life knowing that i got out of it and also with it being one of my favorite songs. with all that being said without Electra Heart idk if I would be here today so I’m really thankful and appreciative of Marina ♡

i definitely feel like you should have gone into details about why she left her record label after releasing electra heart and the break she took after froot, it would definitely help a lot of newcomers understand the meaning behind some of her songs and understand her more as an artist. great video though, she definitely deserves more recognition like this

electra heart is a classic but the production aged in comparison to the family jewels which still manages to sound so fresh

I don’t think people truly realize the genius of Marina. She created an alter-ego, Electra Heart, and the songs are very depressing with a deceptively upbeat tune. Instead of ditching the Electra Heart character and just hoping people will forget about her, she literally killed Electra off. It’s incredibly smart and it’s not something that a lot of artists can get away with, but she made it work.
Froot is literally a piece of art, it helped me through difficult times. It’s sad that Marina is so under appreciated

I've always loved her sound. I remember oh no and some others from the family jewels playing on radio back in 2015. Marina and the Diamonds was one of the few radio artists who really caught my attention back then. I'm getting properly into marina now and it feels so nostalgic

I feel like the decision wasn’t really her’s to live w her father bc of the lyrics of seventeen. I think it was smthn forced onto her it sounds quite traumatic even when interviewers have asked her she doesn’t give a real response.

I don’t think it’s ABOUt custody. She’s speaking to her father in the entire song(“no I’m not your little slave”) so why would she tell him “could never tell you what happened the day I turned seventeen?” If her dad got custody Bc obviously he knew cuz he did. Like it’s definitely more traumatic than him getting custody than her. She also said in an interview that seventeen wasn’t “family friendly.”

(idk the exact reasoning if it was custody or maybe her dad wanted to make up for the fact he was not present in her life bfr) & then the song goes on esp in the second verse to discuss her relationship w her dad and what she experienced whilst living with him - the fact he had a new wife and how he didn’t believe in her music career at the start. (there are plenty of sources to back that up and more content abt how he didn’t approve of her singing career in family jewels) also the line where she says ‘u don’t f about my family’ when she says ‘my family’ she’s referring to her mum and that side - the side she grew up in during childhood

Marina is a lyrical GENIUS, I swear everyone is sleeping on her. She definitely deserved and still deserves more praise! Even her last album is a masterpiece, and I get some people are mad that she changed her sound but to say she "fell off" because of that is delusional...

Marina is very Kate Bush like that's why I'm enjoying her discography and tons of music videos. We need more anti-pop pop stars like her to make the genre actually worth listening to. Like Madonna in the late 80's and 90's or Bjork before 2010 she has been killing it so far.

I think what annoys me is I don’t wanna compare lana and marina but to me marina was more versatile musically and had introspective thoughts in her music. I think lana just stuck to the concept of sad love and it touched a particular generation of people with “daddy issues”
