  • In 2019 I purchased a 1968 Play Mor 140 with the thought of maybe SOMEDAY fixing it up. Little did I know that in 2020 when the world ground to a hault I would have more than enough time on my hands to get to work. What followed was 2 years of work and thousands of dollars. Worth it?

    I'm not sure that I could do that, first because I lack expertise, second because I do not have friends or family who are familiar with the workings of a trailer/camper, woodwork or metal work, or stripping and painting. I know plenty of mechanical people, but that seems like a very small part of this project. You've created a beautiful piece of personal art here and I am happy that you're finished and I hope that your family will treasure this for life :)

      Ha ha, thanks! Sometimes it's easier to rebuild it from the ground up, even though it may not feel that way when you're looking at a pile of debris that used to look like a camper thinking, "what have I done?!"

    Nicely done! The $600 got you the trailer frame, the metal skins, and templates (from the rotted sections). The trailer frame would cost at least that.
    Well done. Lovely result. $5000 over 2 years - not too bad - a little over $200 a month.

    Awesome video. I'm near the end of freshening up my 1978 maxi pop top caravan. I have been working on it every day for the last 2 weeks! What an amazing difference a few repairs, a bit of paint and a good clean does.
    I haven't completely rebuilt mine like you did yours! I've just spent hours upon hours sanding, filling, scraping, painting and cleaning.
    Definitely worth all the work doing up old caravans, they're absolutely awesome. None of the more modern stuff has the same charm as the stuff from the 80s and under.

      Sounds like a fun project! I've never done a pop up camper before, but I really like the look of the newer A-Liners, so I've always thought about finding a used one to just do a remodel on rather than a full rebuild, and give it some of that vintage quality and charm. But good on you for putting in the hours and the elbow grease; it'll all be worth it in the end!

      Dolphins look neat! I've never worked on a motorized RV, but I do like them. My dad had an 89' Toyota Pickup when I was a kid, and it was the perfect small truck, but sadly it got totaled in a rear end collision when it was about 30 years old, otherwise he'd still be driving it.

    Your videos are the best! I am trying to educate myself before digging in on mine. I am finally ...JUST starting to work on a vintage camper that I've had sitting in my driveway for 3 years! (1960's 16' Kenskill). I am now ready to put in some elbow grease! **Each video of yours makes my project less intimidating... so THANK YOU for so much information and detail! I will definitely try to document my 'before and after' as it's so fun to view yours. My entire camper is still the original wood but there is a bit of water damage in spots on the wood from the seals (corners and windows) so I am working on waterproofing first. Most likely will need to paint the walls inside to cover some light stains on the wood... but would LOVE to keep the original wood ceiling... at the very least. If I did that, I would have to harvest some wood from the sides to make the ceiling panels match up nicely and be stain-free (just one panel near a ceiling vent has to be replaced). I would rather buy a wood veneer to match vs pull from the walls....but I can't imagine being able to match the rest of the ceiling in that way, not even sure what kind of wood it is, just yet?! I will be asking a woodworker friend of mine first, but wondering if you know of where I could possibly source wood veneer. Thanks again for all of your videos! Every one of them has taught me something!

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  6 місяців тому

      Thanks for the kind words! Typically most campers with visible wood will have panels made of birch plywood. You wouldn't want to try to veneer over the top of what you've got there though. Instead you'd get new plywood and finish it to match, more or less, the original, which was often finished in amber shellac. Google "repairing shellac finish," and you might find it's easier than you thought. Good luck!

      I'd say that I preferred using pocket holes, but they are a bit time consuming to use, and you have to plan out a bit where you're going to put them. Regardless of how you put the studs together, it's gluing the paneling to them that makes the wall strong and resilient.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  3 місяці тому

      A good place to start is by taking the skins off to see what's underneath. You can replace any rotted wood if needed then. If it turns out your framing is in good condition, great, put the skins back on and use new butyl tape to seal up your window, vents, trim, and accessories, which you need to do anyway if your camper hasn't been resealed in the last 10 years.

    So, you put your skins on before building and installing the cabinets? How does it affect the structural integrity? As you know now, the factory screwed and nailed from the outside before skins were installed. Any thoughts in hindsight or any issues so far? Thanks

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Рік тому

      Not every camper has the cabinets screwed in from the outside. The '56 Cal-Craft I'm working on now had every cabinet attached from the inside, and some were just hung on the paneling with no bracing to truly secure them in place. From a structural standpoint, a nail or a screw holds equally well in either direction so long as the depth of material that it's sunk into is the same. But in a lot of ways it's easier to screw into cabinets from the outside than it is to do it from the inside, but either direction can be acceptable if planned for accordingly. We needed to get the camper sealed up quickly because at the time we didn't have a protected area to work on it in, so that's why we did things in the order that we did.
      The only thing that was problematic with building things in place was that I didn't get welting installed next to the ceiling, so now there's a visible gap there that I need to figure out a solution for. But structurally the camper is very rigid, probably better than the original in a several ways.
