Owning both, a 982 GT4 (but different from the one in the video with Clubsport package) and a 992 (but as GTS) I can 100% confirm your statements in this comparison. The 911 is a daily who can do sports performance if requested and the GT4 is a pure sports car for the weekend and the track which can do daily tasks if you really want it but that´s not what it´s made for. As you commented that the GT4 is the „smaller“ car. Fully agree on the impression but in fact, the 718 is just minimal smaller than the 911 - the 992 911 just looks fat 😊 I love both cars. If you need to decide for one, I recommend a test drive and to base the decision on the purpose of the car: daily (911) or pure entertainment (GT4). I had GTS 4.0 for almost a year now and I can say that I am aiming to upgrade to 992 4S within next couple of years. As much as I love Cayman, it's getting a bit too much of a car when it's your only car, and you have to drive it every day. RWD becomes problematic in winter after several days of heavy snowfall. 4.0 takes about 25-30 minutes to get to operating temperature, so I can't take short drives, and often have to do some roundtrips just to take care of the engine. Roadtrips over 2 hours are a bit tiring. Usually I listen to podcasts when I drive long distance, and I have to crank the volume way up to be able to hear it well. There are some significant tech issues as well, like the car not picking up the phone for carplay until you restart PCM, which is severely annoying for a daily vehicle. Overall I am absolutely in love with it, I really-really like daily driving it. Just... sometimes I wish I had another car just for that day when I am not in the mood, or when it's snowing, or when I need to do a very short trip. Or when I need to visit my parents who live 2 hours away. But I cannot justify owning two cars when I am living alone, and I cannot imagine myself driving anything other than Porsche. So I think 911 is the way to go.
I love my Boxster, but I would not want to daily drive it. I could, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Thank you for sharing, it helps give viewers a new perspective from someone with much more hands on experience!
Agree on the engine sound (noise). The Bose sound system in my GT4 was simply a waste of money as the engine right behind you is that loud that you don‘t hear the sound system anyway, especially on longer distance drives here in Germany on the Autobahn. This is not a complaint - the engine sound is great !!! It´s just a recommendation to save the money for the sound system as it is useless 😂
I think I understand what you mean, but I am not sure. I might have to come to Germany, and test a GT4 on the Autobahn myself to experience it first hand. For science of course.
Do not think about it too much just buy another porsche next to it. I have a go to work dd car, a high hp weekend car and a dedicated but road legal track car. Never regret having more for each purposes.
And then there is... GTS 4.0 where you can switch the dial options between: comfort, GT4 mode (sport) and GT4 sport (sport plus), a little softer suspension and flying under the radar looks. And also 4.0 caymans and boxters are more 911 than the 992 carrera itself. Those models actually use much more parts of previous 911 than the new one which is tech packed (and software bugs all of the time). So 4.0 models have the "porsche 911 soul" people crave for. The new one is just not it.
I have a 718 GTS 4 (Cayman), it is awesome and I think it’s best of both worlds. GT4 is fantastic don’t get me wrong but quite bold looks with the huge wing and a little hardcore for everyday use. In normal mode the GTS is very easy to live with everyday (but yes quite loud)
If you want a sports car then Cayman if you want a grand tourer that’s better looking then 911. I choose a GTS Cayman 4.0 and I think it’s amazing and more then I could ever want.
I have a 911 Targa 4S (992) with a manual and a 718 Spyder. You have done an excellent job of comparing the 911 to the 718. My wife loves the 911 and won't ride in the Spyder.
That is a tough one, the 911T and GTS 4.0 are two brilliant cars, and in my opinion, sort of fit in the same market. At the end of the day, I would say drive them both and see which one you like more!
Just wanted to clarify, when we say the GT4 is not a daily, do we mean from the ride comfort perspective? I have a 992 and the ride is already quite stiff.
I would say ride comfort for sure, and ride height. It's just such a low car, you tense up every time there is a driveway, speed bump, leaves, ants, literally anything
I sold my 911 997 turbo cabriolet for a 718 982 spyder. There is no comparison. The 911 drives you. You drive the Spyder. It glorious and I have zero regrets after 2 years of owning the spyder.
The 911 was my dream car since the 80s. So when I could finally afford a Porsche 911, I got one. The Cayman is a great choice too, but it was not my dream car.
Depends on your local roads, imo. I had a 981 GT4 and the suspension was fine-ish but it was really the intense road noise. You cannot carry on a conversation in the car 🗣️. Perhaps that’s a feature?!
Glad I watched this as this is my exact dilemma I'm having now so any thoughts appreciated.... My heart wants the GT4 it's the car I've always dreamt of but my head and the wife want me to have a 911 (992) probable the GTS because I do have children and although it's tight in the back of the 911 it does mean we can all go out as a family... Honestly I'm stuck I just don't know what to do...
@@carcaveofficial in the UK not to sure but worth looking into... the GT4 sits around £80k mark base model Carrera around the same in a 992 and the GTS is around £120k. I have the funds available for the GT4 but an owner of multiple super cars I know said maybe it would be best to keep money in the bank go with the GTS 992 keep for 5 years and it wouldn't devalue too much if at all especially if the right spec is bought... it's definitely a dilemma
GT3 is based on the 911 which is rear engined, the GT4 is based on the Cayman platform which is mid engined, and the GTR is a full blown racecar based on the 911 and isn't street legal at all
That would be a great comparison as well. My primary criteria for this comparison was pricing, but there are many other comparisons on the list for future videos!
Friendly, constructive recommendation to the presenter: Hand gesture is a great tool to emphasize a point. But when it's used 80 percent of the presentation, not only does it lose its impact but becomes very, very distracting especially on up close shots. It's like someone waving a hand in your face the entire time. I know it's probably a result of nervous energy and you are not even aware of doing it. Perhaps find a way to calm yourself or channel that energy to something else.
GT4 no brainer, I noted the way you were describing the 911 was along the lines of any other comfortable daily, as opposed to a sports car. In my view the 992 missed the mark by a long way. As a rule Carreras do not appreciate in value, they tend to get hit pretty hard (but far less than BMW or MB). The GT Division cars hold their prices well and in some cases may appreciate. The reality is many people hold their GT Div cars, especially if RS variants.
GT cars hold better for sure, and non-GT 992's haven't been holding quite as well as I would like. I know all cars depreciate, but I feel like 911's used to be better at value retention than they are now
@@carcaveofficial Agreed, it would be interesting to see how production numbers have expanded. I wanted to like the 992, I was expecting a step change as per the 997 - 991 transition but that didn't happen. The 992 didn't move the game on much at all in effect a 991.2 GTS was broadly the equivalent of a 992 S (if you up-specced the 992 S interior). My wife has a 991.2 GTS she much prefers it over the 992. I had an allocation for a 992 GT3 RS and ended up going for a 296 GTB instead (I kept my 991.2 GT3 RS). For me, the interior of the 992 is a mess of screens and gloss plastic - whereas my RS is a mix of alcantara, leather, functional dials and binary buttons. To me the 992 stopped being a sports car and became almost a mid-ranged German executive commuter. In other words, with the exception of some GT division car, the 911 stopped being interesting.
I have tried to ignore my opinions on Porsche for some time now, because they are Porsche, but I couldn't agree more. The brand is a watered down version of what made it great. The new GT3RS is impressive on track, but at $500,000, forgive me, but at the end of the day, it's 'A Porsche'. For that much money, I would buy a Ferrari all day long. To your point about the screens, I am not a fan, the 997 was brilliant, the 991.1 was a jump for sure, and the 991.2 was an appreciated fine tuning, but they all maintained the analog, driving focused experience. The 992 was the first step in moving away from that, and the 992.2 will only make it worse with more screens, and push to start nonsense. Needless to say, I am not impressed, and I feel many Porsche enthusiasts will agree. Side note, love the 296!
@@carcaveofficial Good points, it will be interesting to see if Porsche amend the 992.2 giving the general feeling about it - the 296 GTB is epic, not only is it explosively quick, it works on any road. Moreover, its a nice place to be and although it attracts some attention, people are often interested because its a hybrid that really works. The engine sounds great it feels like a special place to be and enjoy.
I did a review on the 296 and needless to say, was impressed. Every Ferrari just feels right when you are in the driver's seat. Hard to explain what I mean by that, but anyone that has driven one will understand. Also, they nailed it on the sound, especially considering it is a V6. To the point about Porsche, I am not holding out hope that they will change directions. Whoever is making the big picture decisions for the brand seems to be aiming at the Mercedes / BMW / Audi model, trying to reduce tooling costs as much as possible by interiors in all of the cars that are largely identical. The Taycan, Panamera, Cayenne, and new Macan EV are just an overpriced movie theater seat. Everywhere you look is a screen, even the buttons aren't buttons. It is a plastic panel that articulates when you press it. Cheap. You aren't the first person I have spoken to that mentioned leaving Porsche for Ferrari either, and I doubt you will be the last.
The problem is … so many of the ones who are claiming they have an opinion have never driven both , nor could likely afford either one. “ yeah, the Bugatti Veyron is stupid ….I don’t like the wheels…”. Lol. Basically the same premise.
I think everyone can have an opinion for sure, but actually getting behind the wheel lends a new perspective. For example, a 911 seems overpriced on paper for its performance, but when you drive it...it starts to make sense.
Exactly. Or have you seen the videos of the walk around a during the production of these things? Insane! It makes you realize , oh… so that’s why these things are 100k….
I have seen those, it gives a greater appreciation for the brand. I feel that anyone that thinks Porsche is too expensive, simply doesn't fully understand the brand.
You can easily go to a Porsche dealership to test drive a Carrera for 15 minutes without paying anything, but they probably don’t have any demo GT4 in their lot for test drive.
Wtf!??😂😂😂 the video and the comments didn't help at all! The 911 had been my "dream car" since the 80s as a young teen. I like to drive fast, spirited, but not drag race. Im now more confused, i get what you all say in reference to 911, only car, cayman extra car. Problem is, i like rowing gears, 911 also has that option, AND we just bought an 18 jaguar f-type R dynamic awd. Paddle shifting is ok, had never done before, but its not a clutch and shifter...idk...you all are hard selling that gt4 tho..😂😂😂 damn it!
This choice does not exist in real life for a first time Porsche buyer. You wont ever get an allocation for the GT4 unless you already have a “ relationship”with the dealer. You however have an allocation shot with the base 911 if you ask really nice and be patient. I waited for a 718 spyder allocation for 18mo no luck. I switch my ask to 911T got the allocation in 1 mo. That was my choice “settle” for the turbo charge more expensive 911T or no Porsche. Which one do you think I pick?
That is a point I didn't really touch on in the video, but you are right. Getting a GT4 is harder than a 911, undoubtedly. The 911T btw, was the first 911 I was able to drive on the road. Brilliant car!
@@carcaveofficial lol that was my dad's comment using my UA-cam account cause I have premium. Anyhoo, here's him and his proud Porsche 911 Carerra T (992) ua-cam.com/video/KGTaufLplvg/v-deo.htmlsi=awsbyryOmHLCreHB
Had the 911 as a loaner and was disappointed, steering feel so much better in the GT4 and responsiveness of the engine….and no comparison on looks either…base 911 looks boring at the price point
The 992 can do an easy software ECU tune, it will smoke the GT4 on acceleration. If NA is that awesome, then why Porsche made the Turbo S and GT2RS? It’s simple physics.
Said someone who doesn't know how to drive and only has a lead foot. No one who actually drives cars where GT PCars are designed to be used needs to be told why they're amazing and why you'd have one over a Carrera and a turbo S.
I think the NA is a brilliant platform, as is the turbo platform. It’s awesome for the sensations, the noise, the vibration, the linear acceleration. The turbo is nice and torque, gives insane amounts of power, different driving dynamics. I think it comes down to personal preference, there are pros and cons to both
Two Completely different animals. The base 911 is a touring car now. Soft, BIG and fits its niche perfectly. The GT4 is a GT car and it's proper comparison is at the very least a GTS 911. I would take the GT4 over even a GT3 to be honest. The two compared are just not in the same category or thought.
See, I agree with you that the 911 is more of a grand tourer now, but the GTS costs far too much to be compared to the GT4. I think for this comparison, price point was the leading factor. You have the money for one, which would you choose, and obviously is comes down to an undefinable number of factors, but it was an excuse to do more Porsche content so why not! Thanks for watching and sharing your input though mate 🤙

And also 4.0 caymans and boxters are more 911 than the 992 carrera itself. Those models actually use much more parts of previous 911 than the new one which is tech packed (and software bugs all of the time). So 4.0 models have the "porsche 911 soul" people crave for. The new one is just not it.
The GTS is the sweet spot…might be a future video!
@@carcaveofficial
Please tell what color the 718 is. I really like it!!!
The GT4 was Gentian Blue
I have a 718 GTS 4 (Cayman), it is awesome and I think it’s best of both worlds. GT4 is fantastic don’t get me wrong but quite bold looks with the huge wing and a little hardcore for everyday use. In normal mode the GTS is very easy to live with everyday (but yes quite loud)
1st thing: You can easily get a base Carrera. Not sure you'll easily get an allocat6ion for a GT4.
That’s a good point, and unfortunately, it might become even harder soon now that they don’t make it anymore..
If you want a sports car then Cayman if you want a grand tourer that’s better looking then 911. I choose a GTS Cayman 4.0 and I think it’s amazing and more then I could ever want.
You are not the first one to bring up the Cayman GTS, that may be the perfect middle ground between the two
I currently drive the m3 g80 manual with carbon buckets. My next car will be the 911s 992 manual. It's the sweet spot
Good choice! Have you thought about color?
Thanks for watching!
I have a 911 Targa 4S (992) with a manual and a 718 Spyder. You have done an excellent job of comparing the 911 to the 718. My wife loves the 911 and won't ride in the Spyder.
Kind of you to say, glad you enjoyed the video!
718 Spyder my dream car congratulations. I have a 718 Cayman GTS 4 which I love but I would love the Spyder for the summer 👍
I bet you’re always driving the spider 😅
Very nice work. Interesting and valid comparison.
Much appreciated, glad you enjoyed the video!
This is exactly why I just ordered a 2025 boxster S
Manual
My first sports car
I’m 70
Fun should arrive December 6
Congratulations sir! Well done in getting your order in before they went fully electric!
Amazing congrats.
This is almost my question. Just 911 T as I want carbon seats and manual vs Cayman GTS 4.0
That is a tough one, the 911T and GTS 4.0 are two brilliant cars, and in my opinion, sort of fit in the same market. At the end of the day, I would say drive them both and see which one you like more!
@@carcaveofficial yes I need to do that
i remember that poil. i voted gt4, and also couldnt believe it was a 50/50 vote at that time.
It was a surprise to me, the odds of getting 50/50 is pretty nuts.
Thanks for voting btw!
I got to rent a 718 GT4 in Germany, I had never driven a Porsche before, and damn was it fun, so f’n fun. Wish I could afford one!
Maybe one day you will be able to, you never know!
Great video!
Thanks mate!
I sold my 911 997 turbo cabriolet for a 718 982 spyder. There is no comparison. The 911 drives you. You drive the Spyder. It glorious and I have zero regrets after 2 years of owning the spyder.
That's a great way of saying it, one drives you, you drive the other. Thanks for sharing!
The 911 was my dream car since the 80s. So when I could finally afford a Porsche 911, I got one. The Cayman is a great choice too, but it was not my dream car.
You aren't alone in that!
I daily my 992 Carrera S Cab Manual but also have the FOMO.
Yep the GT4 just finished production for this generation.
Which is unfortunate…
Just went through same comparison and had exactly same conclusion. Nice video!
Thanks mate!
For me this is a no brainer. Gt4 even daily.
Better external looks, but not the dashboard, and it is the one you see it driving.. so I prefer 911
Well...for GTS money, you can almost get a base 911 and a GT4....
Whether you go with the GTS or the GT4, I think your money is going to be safe in either car.
What is the difference between a gt3, gt4 and a gtr?
I’m new to cars😅
GT3 is based on the 911 which is rear engined, the GT4 is based on the Cayman platform which is mid engined, and the GTR is a full blown racecar based on the 911 and isn't street legal at all
@@carcaveofficial thanks bro
My pleasure mate
I’m so into 911 i couldn’t choose other models.
Can't go wrong either way!
ive driven both..a GTS Cayman...ended with a base 991.2 i dont track so its enough for me👌
Even on track, it’s brilliant, the GT4 is just a bit more focused.
Congrats on the 911!
@@carcaveofficial Thank You! best car ive had 😄👍
I own a 992 Carrera GTS. Love it. Wouldn't a 911 GT3 be a better comparison to a 718 GT4? They're both naturally aspirated 4 litre engines.
That would be a great comparison as well. My primary criteria for this comparison was pricing, but there are many other comparisons on the list for future videos!
they should compare 4.0 to carrera T.
4.0L to the Carrera T would be an interesting comparison too!
Sold my 911 and jumped in to a GT4, I liked my 911but I love my GT4
Tough not to love a GT4, to date I haven't met anyone that has a GT4 that isn't infatuated by it.
911 for me, better all around sport car than GT4 and it's a 911, only i wish they put a NA flat six back into a base Carrera.
Don’t we all…
GT3 Touring.🎉
Friendly, constructive recommendation to the presenter: Hand gesture is a great tool to emphasize a point. But when it's used 80 percent of the presentation, not only does it lose its impact but becomes very, very distracting especially on up close shots. It's like someone waving a hand in your face the entire time. I know it's probably a result of nervous energy and you are not even aware of doing it. Perhaps find a way to calm yourself or channel that energy to something else.
Appreciate the feedback mate, thank you
The GT4 is a great track car/weekend car, but for daily driving, the 911 is probably better.
Agreed!
I’ve already made my choice
992 Turbo S .
One heck of choice mate, congrats!
Gt4 ❤
Agreeeeeeeeed
My God this was good
The cars or the video? Please choose the latter lol
If you have the Jag with the paddles, get the GT4. Problem solved!
911 all day. But then again i dont go to the track. And i would get the S simply for the manual.
Everyone's purpose for the cars will be different, as an all around-er the 911 can't be beat!
911 all day would have been the right response 5 years ago
It can still be the right response today....
Gt4 all day
This choice does not exist in real life for a first time Porsche buyer.
Anyhoo, here's him and his proud Porsche 911 Carerra T (992)

Beautiful spec, I am a sucker for the model designation on the doors!
Proud owner of a 992, 911 Carrera S. Divine!!
Divine is a great word for it!
Actually the s is closer to price than the base...
Eh..not really....
The GT4 is around $100K, and the S is $131K.
All I know is, the cayman in Assetto Corsa is way more stable at high speed hard cornering than the 911
Good to know! Thanks for chiming in mate!
Easy, get a 718 spyder 🎉
Love me a spyder....
Carrera . easy.
Not a bad choice, but then again are there any bad choices here?
Had the 911 as a loaner and was disappointed, steering feel so much better in the GT4 and responsiveness of the engine….and no comparison on looks either…base 911 looks boring at the price point
I would say they are made for a different purpose, the GT4 is pretty specialized.
It’s ALMOST perfect…it’s not a spyder. ;)
I am a sucker for a vert!
A base 992 gets you the cache but it’s not the enthusiasts choice
I agree, the GT4 is more of a driver's choice for sure.
If it's the first Porsche I'd go didn't the 911 as that's the product line you think of... AG's to be frank.. Party off why anyone buys a Porsche is for "pride of ownership".. status.. To tell people you MADE IT out have wealthy parents..
I will take 992 T in manual over these 2 cars
I do love a Porsche T car...
For the money, the Cayman GT4's interior is total garbage😏
Fr tho
None both horribly overpriced
I am going to have to strongly disagree with this comment....overpriced would suggest that they are not worth the money, and they 100% are worth the money. Are they expensive? Yes, but I do not think they are priced out of what they offer.
check the price of the new M2 or the Alpine A110R. Those are also getting very expensive (at least here in europe)
Everything is getting ridiculously expensive...
It's like asking who's better CR7 or the Real Brazilian Ronaldo R9...
I think we all know the answer.
