I strongly recommend “Wavelength”. It’s a favorite amongst my friends and it’s a multiplayer game that can be played time and time again with different people. There are two teams and you are given a card that has a spectrum of “this or that” categories and one person gives their teammates a clue and your team has to figure out which side of the spectrum it’s on. If you did decide to pick it up, I would love to see you play it on the channel!
This is the type of KickThePJ video that I need a sequel to! I’ve been valuing your recs since 2015, and this came at the perfect time. From a board game lover to another- play Escape The Dark Castle! Easily the most addicting game I’ve ever played, and it’s a table-flipper for sure. Enjoy!
Please have Daniel J. Layton introduce you to No Rolls Barred so you can be a guest over there and play board games with them. Pretty please. It feels like you'd have a lot of fun over there.
I recently bought flamecraft and would recommend 100%! It’s dragons running tiny shops with pun names and the artwork is beautiful. It has loads of different shops and enchantments so it’s really replayable!
There is this old board game, maybe you already played it so much. But it's called Dixit. It's a storytelling game, where you need to guess which card the other player used based on the clue the player tells you and the illustration of the cards. It's very imaginative. Since it's up to the perspective of each person where a person sees for example a pirate other people might see idk a explorer, or something else. If you guess right you get points, the winner is the one who reach first to 24 points i think.
I don't know if this counts as a board game, but my friends and I used to play Kittens in a Blender every lunch period in high school. Recently rediscovered it and have introduced it to more people who love it!
Another beautiful boardgame that's worth checking out is Parks, it's a multiplayer game where you (and up to three other players) take on the role of two hikers (each) who hike a trail across four seasons. The game is really simple to pick up and has some of the most beautiful art cards ever. The main goal is to collect national parks which are worth victory points. At the end of all four seasons the player with the highest victory point total wins!! As well as parks, a lot of other people are mentioning root. BUT, another game that has the same artist that's very easy to get into is "FORT". It's a deck builder where you take on the role of a group of kids and best friends as they build up their fort. It's another victory point game but it's incredibly charming.
mice & mystics reminded me of a game i played for the first time with my friends this past year, titled ‘betrayal.’ there’s several editions now but, you choose your character and it follows a story that you can read aloud as you explore a (possibly haunted) house. definitely another DND gateway game lol highly recommend :)
I love mice and mystics, its such a fun game. If you like games that are d&d-esque I also suggest Gloomhaven. I've also been getting into legacy games lately (which are story driven board games). Season 1 of pandemic legacy and betrayal legacy are fantastic.
I need more recommendation video of board games. I need to know what a 5 star difficulty game looks like... But great video! I already had a couple of these on my radar, so hearing them being recommended has helped a lot in deciding whether or not to make the purchase. Thanks you!
Ooh, I was thinking about buying Wingspan! I've been playing Flourish with my partner these days. The art is very pretty as well, and you can play with more people too! I think there is also a cooperative mode, but we like the competition lol Oh, and my favorite game ever is Eldritch Horror; it's lovecraftian horror and I highly recommend it. It's story heavy and looong, but very strategic (it's a coop game). Best played in two as well, as it takes too long with more people.
Wingspan is one of my top 10 favorite board games and I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed Isle of Cats. If you’re into engine building and fun animals, I’d HIGHLY recommend Ark Nova which is game where each player is trying to run a zoo or Everdell where you’re building your own little village full of woodland creatures. A solid dice game my boyfriend has introduced me to is Roll Player where you’re trying to fill a board in front of you with different colorful dice. And, entirely unrelated, a fun murder mystery Clue style game I’d recommend is called Awkward Guests. Another murder mystery co-op game I LOVE is called Mysterium where one person plays as a ghost sending visions through beautifully illustrated cards to the other players.
I'm sure you will have come across Tokaido, but just in case, I really love that game. It's so lovely walking the road and taking it all in, meeting people, painting, shopping for souvenirs, trying the food, ave the hot springs. And its art is beautiful too. Up to 5 players and slightly different depending on how many you play with and which character you play as. It's so good.
Absolutely love these styles of videos, as I'm a big fan of board games. My suggestion for a new board game if you don't already own it is Mystic Market. It's a relatively easy game where players are collecting magical ingredients to sell on the magic stock market. There are physical game pieces to represent the stocks, and the players get to make the changes upon selling items. The goal is to become the richest by the end of the game, and it is genuinely such a fun little game that I highly recommend.
I actually ended up getting The Isle of Cats and Mice and Mystics for my sister and her husband because they love the same kind of board games you do! They love them! Thank you for the suggestions!!!
If you’re into deck building board games, I love ascension! It’s pretty easy but there’s a lot of different strategy options once you get in the groove. I also wanted to say I like wingspan a lot
A game I'll recommend anyone is Exploding kittens, there's lots of strategy and funny pictures that may or may not be safe for work depending on the deck you have, and the zombie expansion just raises the stakes and makes the game take even longer! Every draw is a gamble but the more cards you have the more you can do, and you can attack other players or help them, it's a lot of fun! Last living player wins!
LOVE wingspan! Been playing it for about a year. Here’s some of my favorite board games: Cascadia, Viticulture, Sagrada, Parks, Newton, Azul (all versions), and Verdant. I’m sure there’s some others I’m forgetting. PJ please share more board game recommendations!
soviet kitchen unleashed has been a favourite of mine these last months! you use an app to scan cards with different colors to match given shades of food, and can follow a story mode!
Ah these are great! Absolutely love Wingspan and need to give it more goes. I highly recommend Regicide if you want another small game that's great with two players. Also been really enjoying Cascadia, which is a tile and worker placement game set in the beautiful cascade mountain range where you'll be trying to make habitats for lots of animals! That and Cosmic Encounter is also always a great one (especially with five players).
Onitama is a good one to look out for!! It's 2 player, and has a similar feeling to chess. However where you can move is dictated by what cards you have in front of you. It's a very elegant game, but make brain go think
Recently played Flamecraft for the first time and it slapped! If you love engine building and transactions, that's the game for you! The Azul games are also great... we have Queen's Garden and it's a good one for two or three people!
Spirit Island is pretty amazing. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it's fun burning, drowning, terrorizing, or otherwise annihilating settlers...
Currently absolutely adoring root + everdell, but my absolute favourite board games right now are Azul and patchwork, so so fun and so many tactics and strategies!
Love the recs, PJ! I think you would love Roll Player and it's expansions! I think you'll like Flamecraft but based on the type of games you like, it might be too simple for you. PARKS is also good but you've already played that iirc!
Dungeon Degenerates is a board game with really deep fun lore and an incredible art style of cards, creatures, and lore/booklets. Highly recommend it for that alone
I can’t wait to play some of these games! The cat one especially!! I know what I want for Christmas now! The little figures at the beginning reminded me of meeples!! Carcassonne is a great game if you haven’t played it!
I have to know if you played Gloomhaven or Frosthaven, they are my absolute favourites! They’re super daunting at first but so fun once you get the hang of them
In a similar vein to Wingspan but a bit simpler (in case you’re in an ongoing effort to convert new people into board game enjoyers) I highly recommend Ecologies!!!! It’s deck building and so so fun!!
Board games are my favorite thing sooo here are my recs -Scout (short, easy, fun card game) -Radlands (great 2-player battling game) -Wonderland’s War (bag builder battler. Very fun. Very long 😂) -Spirit Island (simply the best game. Nothing will top this. Solo or coop. But very difficult to beat)
Have you played parks? That is one of my most favorite board games. It’s a little complicated when you’re first playing so set aside around 2 hours to learn/do your first play through. If you want something easier, the game has a shorter version of the game called trails! It’s just as fun :)
I’ve played Wingspan!! It’s fun, but can be a bit difficult to get the hang of at first if you’ve never played a game like it before. But the art style IS pretty and if you’re willing to put in the time to learn it…it is indeed a very satisfying play!
codenames duet XXL has biggest cards, regular codenames duet has normal cards (although the map cards are rectangular, as opposed to square cards from the basic version)
I've been diggin the Red Dragon Inn lately. Theres expansions to add on characters/players, and its easy to turn into a drinking game if thats your thing
idk if it’s just a kickstarter game or if you can buy it but there’s a game called Cultivate where you make a cult and convince people to join and it’s very fun and also frustrating when you’re losing (and your whole group of friends turns against you for no reason like mine did 😡😡😡😡) but nonetheless a good time
i love wingspan! it's one of the only board games that i have gotten my parents to play & it is now a staple of our family gatherings. i've been loving sleeping gods, personally!
First off, board games are Not Boring! Also, love Wingspan! It’s really fun to play.. especially if you additionally buy the expansion packs, you learn about more birds from other continents.. and the pure satisfaction I get when it’s time to role the food dice thru the bird feeder.. 😎🙌🏻
have you tried the real life version of Eels and Escalators from spongebob? i haven’t had a chance to yet but from what i hear it’s actually very well thought out and complicated!
My Top Two That Are My Faves,Would HAVE TO Be”Isle Of Cats”(🐈⬛🏝️🐈),& Also”WingSpan!!”(🦅🕊️)Due To Me LOVING Animals,Like Crazy🤪🥰& Also How Each Board Looks Quite Interesting To Me,As Well!!😉
If you haven’t played Root before, it’s my personal favourite board game and just beautiful to look at on top of that, I strongly recommend!
I second this. Such a fun and gorgeous looking game!
it's so cute! i played this with my pals at our local board game bar & loved it. very animal crossing chic
Love root!
I strongly recommend “Wavelength”. It’s a favorite amongst my friends and it’s a multiplayer game that can be played time and time again with different people. Azul and Splendor are great boards games I've been playing recently. Thank you PJ for these recommendations!
My roommate and I have also been on a big Azul kick lately! Great game

I would love a part 2 of this! I'm taking notes for my next board game night :D

If you’re into deck building board games, I love ascension! It’s pretty easy but there’s a lot of different strategy options once you get in the groove. I also wanted to say I like wingspan a lot
My fave board game for the last several years is Terraforming Mars. It’s a resource heavy game.
A game I'll recommend anyone is Exploding kittens, there's lots of strategy and funny pictures that may or may not be safe for work depending on the deck you have, and the zombie expansion just raises the stakes and makes the game take even longer! Onitama is a good one to look out for!! It's 2 player, and has a similar feeling to chess. However where you can move is dictated by what cards you have in front of you. It's a very elegant game, but make brain go think

PJ doing some great editing again for the intro, but nobody stops and thinks about how many PJ's have been deleted by PJ
Love wingspan! Interested to try code names duet, thanks for the recommendation!
Dungeon Degenerates is a board game with really deep fun lore and an incredible art style of cards, creatures, and lore/booklets. Highly recommend it for that alone

Arkham Horror will always be my favorite board game, despite how complicated and long it is.
Just as a suggestion. You can play Codenames online if you can't physically have friends to play it with. I'd highly recommend it. Its hilarious ❤

This reminded me that I haven't played Harry Potter Codenames in a while. Me and my boyfriend are not good at it lmao
