    Warhammer was my favorite Inner Sphere mech just because it was shown on the game box cover, now I like the Catapult for the various looks of it and the fighter style cockpit it has. The Mad Cat is my overall favorite, since the rule book had it on the cover and the old Mechwarrior pc games was a favorite go to mech because of the looks, again with the fighter cockpit design and the combo of Marauder style with Catapult style on the mech.

    7:12 you reminded me of the old Mechwarrior 2 mechbay voice when the player switched between mechs. Nice!

    2:20. The last lawsuit by Harmony Gold was thrown out. Thus the designs are usable now.

    The tl;dr version is that back in the day both FASA, the original creators of Battletech, and Harmony Gold, who marketed the Robotech series bought the designs for the various Macross and other Mecha anime from a company that did not have the rights to sell said designs. The big problem is, because Harmony Gold was primarily a real estate company back then, they had a metric fuckton more money to throw around.
    I don't know all the details but I know HG had to work out some distribution deal with the three Japanese companies that made Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada, i.e. Big West, Studio Nue and Tatsunoko Productions. After this deal was struck they essentially bullied FASA out of using the Macross and other anime mechs in Battletech through the court system until they came out with Project Phoenix sometime in the 90s I think. I wasn't playing Battletech at the time so I don't have exact dates.
    It wasn't until the last 5 years or so that Catalyst Game Labs, the new holders of the Battletech tabletop IP reintroduced the, as they were known in the Battletech community, Unseen mechs from the Macross and other anime series into the full game. However, there is a fly in the ointment. I recently learned that Harmony Gold struck a new deal with Big West, Studio Nue and Tatsunoko productions that would allow HG to market the original Macross anime, as well as its sequels, Macross II, Macross Plus, Macross Zero, Macross Frontier and I believe Macross Delta is the newest one, in the US.
    It may just be the cynic in me but I can't help but fear that this deal just gave HG a nuclear level weapon to go after CGL, even though they're backed by TOPPS the trading card company, who have even more money to throw around than Hasbro did when HG tried going after them a number of years back over their Jetfire/Sky Stryker GIJOE/Transformers toy. A few years back HG lost a case against Piranha Games and Harebrained Schemes over their Battletech/Mechwarrior video games. If HG can somehow eke out a win over CGL then both PGI and HBS would get massively screwed over.

      HG tried to hit Piranha and Hairbrained Schemes over the use of newly-redesigned versions of the Unseen on the grounds that they used the same names, but the lawsuit got tossed because the names were never in dispute and the designs were legally distinct enough to not count as copies of the Macross mecha. Since these models are also those new designs, I think Harmony Gold is out of luck.

    • @BlueLightning12
      @BlueLightning12 3 роки тому

      @@theodorelehman I hope that's true and that I'm just... I'm not sure what the right emotion/phrase/word for what I'm feeling/thinking about all this. I hope I'm just being a cynic, but I just can't help but think that, because now that HG has an actual legal claim on those original mecha designs, they might make an argument that, even though the new designs are quite distinct from their originals back in the 80s, because they are still based on those original designs which they now have exclusive domain over and make a stink about it.
      The way HG has thrown the word exclusive around these last 30 years you know they'll throw it around some more now that they have a piece of paper that actually backs it up.

    • @rollingthunder55
      @rollingthunder55 3 роки тому +1

      @@theodorelehman Was dismissed with prejudice which means Harmony Gold can not go after them any more as nether they nor the studio that made macross in the first place actually had the rights to the original 23 anyways. Pirahana games made a deal with the owners of the images to use the likenesses but had to be different which they were doing anyways with these updates.

      @rburt3 3 роки тому

      Yeah, we never need fear HG lawsuits again. Just a small correction, CGL doesn't hold the BattleTech IP. It is actually owned by Topps (yes, the baseball card company) and licensed to CGL for tabletop and fiction based on the BattleTech IP.

      True, but I guess that's what "real" battletech is for. This seems intended for much larger scale battles. I'm looking forward to throwing out a lot more models on the table.

      @@AllMiniaturesGreatandSmall Exactly. If someone wants the crunchy mech simulator, BattleTech is still alive and actively developed (not that the rules have changed overmuch in the last 30 years). It is all "real" BattleTech and that's a good thing.
