Very well put Reg., I have been climbing since I was in high school back in 1982, so I have 35+ years of accident/injury free experience behind me and I always have not liked the double snap fliplines, I use 2 at a time or just one after I get my climbing line set. The older flip lines actually had the rope go through the snap with the cable inside and then the rope was weaved back together over the cable crimp, I liked that much better than today's "cable only" through the snap design.. The best way and safest is using two lines at once since there is no way both clips would fail at the same time, sure it is a bit of as hassle but the guarantee of fail safe climbing is worth it, at least to me it is.
So true! I am new in the business and although I work with a relatively new flipline, I have added a prusik-backup on both sides and since then I run up trees with a much more comfortable feeling and no fear at all anymore.
always appreciate your thoughts Reg and another simple innovation great to hear you comment that it's no substitute for inspection and replacement but also there with a real world solution that could get someone out of a jam 👍
I like to use my center d-ring and take an additional wrap around with the lanyard for the skinny poles. holds well if you slip and is still adjustable.
This video has really helped bring peace of mind when climbing especially on the spar. I have a dynema sling with a standard prussik and a rated micro biner clipped to the rotating shackle of my double locking snap biner. Of this doesn’t protect me from accidental opening of the double locking biner but would save me if the wire failed. I may refine my system again just the way it is set up above. Thanks Reg for always posting such helpful and possibly life saving techniques!
Are you referring to the 1/2" wide, flat Dyneema micro slings?? I SWEAR by those!!!!😉😂👌👍👍👍 ....I'm obsessed with them, as a matter of fact! (edit: oops! you mentioned having a prusik (around it?) I guess I'm missing the picture😉)
Samuel Luria I am using the dynema sling tied as a Prusik hitch. I also use another one girth hitched around a small ABR rigging ring for small tops, redirects, and to rig off spars with no limbs. It’s so light and small it stays on my harness. 🤙
I carry 5-6 48" Dyneema slings, in military surplus grenade pouches, on my saddle at all times........There seems to be no end to their usefulness.......(just to be clear, I'm talking about the really thin, 1/2" wide, flat slings....I have my round Dyneema sling, with ring, in a separate pouch....but the thin ones fit 2-4 in each of two small pouches...)
Reg, how about hacksaw off the worn out double snap and replace it with a carabiner? And of course you could still have the back up prusik and carabiner too!
Protecting yourself is always a good message to listen to. Female climber in Houston died trimming a palm tree after cutting the single lanyard she employed for the climb.
+Joar Flesjå Ideally Joar, yes. But that particular line had only had sporadic use through 5 years. To retire it after 2 would be premature in this instance.
5 years old do you have loller inspections in the states ? thanks for another great vid they have been an inspiration to me during my arborist training keep up the good work
thankfully no lol equivalent out here Peter. so, we're allowed to make a call on our equipment, tie our own shoelaces....stuff like that. yeah 5 years old, but only sporadic use. I have several fliplines, different lengths.
I cut the snap hook off my flip line the day I got it and always used a carabiner. It's not that I didn't trust to the hook it's just I don't trust the swivel point.
Worked with English guy over here Jon cox, great climber an so easy to work with' not sure if ya knows him reg but he's kind of a good full an climber over sydney'
I like the idea in this video. However, when I have used two lanyards to pass limbs while climbing with spikes I have noticed potential for confusion. Having upper and lower dee rings helps. Once when I was climbing down a spar I managed to unclip from both lanyards. I don't really know how, other than I was worn out and broke my rule of never unclipping without my weight in a line. I could see this technique leading confusion if both snap and carabiner are attached to the same ring. Anyone have suggestions?
Color coding for clarity, in addition to, what you said and developing a step process, check off list and 2nd nature stick to your routine, it will save you when tired or injured/distracted. Form good habits and don't, or try not to stray away from your routine. Thanks, guys, appreciate you all.
Thanks man. Yea lil floppy so I put a bungee to keep it from side loading or spinning. I like wire core lanyards but both snaps I'm scared of.. The light snap are hollow and seem weak if they get any abuse.
Jon Owens not sure if you’ve yet implemented this but, for what it’s worth, if you do replace the snap with a carabiner, make sure it’s a heavy one, for that first flip you do around the spar to clip it on.
Like what your saying reg, I'm in Australia do some palms some Kentia palms skinny and twisty' I like to trust my spikes but if I slip bro, I slide. So I reckon a choke line with positioned be good' like even when felling a head out a choke I'd like, my bro thinks I'm a pussy but bro knows I can't slide', what I reckon bit of effort to slide it up, but I'm in no hurry only part time climber, haha cheers reg love your vids!

You always have great Temperament when you were explaining a situation you are very easy to understand thank you very much

Coming back to this video after watching Dan’s (Climbing Arborist) near miss. Life saving info. Thanks again

Absolutely take care! As usual, u add a measure of wisdom and safety. Hope all is well with u and family!!

Ditto!😉
Double wrap is all that is needed on small diameter stems...

Samuel Luria Yep The 1/2 inch flat dyneema. I will take a picture and post it

Great 👍
Its very important to check your gear
Good info Reg thank you for sharing your experience
I think it would be a good idea too replacing it every second year. thanks for the video. 👍👍
+Joar Flesjå Ideally Joar, yes. But that particular line had only had sporadic use through 5 years. To retire it after 2 would be premature in this instance.
Thanks for sharing it Reg! Good thinking 👍
met a dude in a wheel chair who told me to back these up, had roll out.
Welldone mate love it you definitely made it safer i will do the same thing.stay sharp

Thank you reg for the info good idea I like your safe way of working
love your videos man keep em coming.
Goin on my lanyard immediately very good addition 👍👍
Great advice reg!!!
What about using a penetrating oil on the thimble and crimp termination? Would protect the inside somewhat.
Never thought a bought just strictly backing up the crimp outstanding idea. Well done as per normal! How much longer on the forestry job?
+Jared Cutshall Finished for now Jared
I cut the snap hook off my flip line the day I got it and always used a carabiner. It's not that I didn't trust to the hook it's just I don't trust the swivel point.
sound advice ,thanks for posting .
Reg, why not just replace the rope snap with a caribiner? (dumb question from a learning, not-yet/newbie)
Thanks Reg makes sense, stay safe
Worked with English guy over here Jon cox, great climber an so easy to work with' not sure if ya knows him reg but he's kind of a good full an climber over sydney'
Doesn't ring a bell mate. I worked in Sidney 92-93. Had a great time

safety is so important after 10 Years I finally replaced my saddle you can never puts price on safety
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks reg
Is it a bad idea to cut em off and replace with carabiner..
Jon Owens I don't think it's a bad idea John. The only thing to watch for is the carabiner rotating/misalignment on the eye while you climbing.

new flipline roll out twice on10-23-2016. ill tie my own shoes from now on.

How ironic....my aluminum snap wore out the same way 2 days ago.

why not just put the crab in the spliced eye and let the two way dangle?
watch it again
hey reg it,s bill from conneaut lake i hope u threw that flipline away if u didn,t please do u cant put a price on your life
I'd rather use an old crab and abit of old rope!
Hate those snaps. Too heavy I knocked my thumb nail off with one.
