Southwest includes two free checked bag during every flight. Also you're paying an extra $40 to save almost 15 hours. Even a high speed train would go max 220 (average probably 180-190 based off Japanese bullet train) mph while a 737 Max can cruise at 521 mph so in terms of speed it's still no comparison. Not hating on a HST but just saying they aren't that much better than aircraft.
Probably the journey from Chicago to New York is the best Amtrak experience. It’s not too long but not too short. I don’t know who could do the California Zephyr. 50+ hours on a train sounds like hell
Even more stressful in Germany. Back in 92, traveling with our two young boys and the travel agent neglected to warn us the time on the ticket was the time they leave, let alone not nearly enough time to get to our connection in Cologne. I was definitely happy to be able to have most of our luggage sent ahead from Zandvoort on the way back.

Unless I can get there on foot (not that I’d ever be able to take off work without going into debt anyway) I guess I’m limited to the 10 mile radius of my house and whatever happens to be between my house and my work so I can save excess gas money/ transport fare to get there

Yeah that's true. You want to be at the airport 2 hours early for that 1 hour flight. I dunno how easy trains are in America but in Europe you just show up at the right time and hop on. They don't even check your ticket until the train is moving.
Using trains is also much more of a green option as opposed to flying, I prefer it whenever I'm going anywhere top far from home but just close enough for the train
It just needs good scheduling probably! Whatever they do in Europe. They use the same lines but they must have a good system for deciding who uses them when.
It all depends on how you feel and what you’re willing to do with the time. If you want to get there faster, take a plane. If you want to relax more and sightsee, take the train
Had my first experience from Baltimore to Charleston. It was 10 hours but it kinda didnt felt like 10 hours especially once you take out a Nintendo Switch. Spent the time to play and beat the main story in Xenoblade Chronciles 3.
Been taking Amtrak for the last 10 years on leisure trips and it’s worth it even when riding coach, I fly only in emergency scenarios only, I’m over the bull jive when it comes to flying
Even the Amtrak Capitol Corridor train is pretty nice. Lots of legroom - like business class on a plane. Go to a restroom on the train any time you like vs planes with seat belt signs going on and & off. But you might experience quite a delay near Martinez as they raise and lower a rail bridge to let ships pass.
Trains, hands down. We just need to electrify them, make them 110mph avg, and most of all GIVE THEM PRIORITY OVER FRIEGHT. That's the real issue, freight, and their 4 mile long trains with one engineer 🙄

Time is always priceless
Is it? Or is the journey part of the destination too?
It’s all what you want. I have never traveled that far on a train. It sounds fun I would love to see the views, but you can’t beat that travel time.
Your choice reflects how much you value your own time.
Does Amtrak provide Internet & Bluetooth for their Bedroom Customers from Chicago to San Francisco?
Amtrak just sounds so much better, I'm planning my first trip for next year. I'm taking a friend back to Vegas cause we flew last time
The views on the train are worth it. Also - if I had lots of checked luggages i would pick train too
I’d Rather Ride The Train. I Rode It Once For Like 2 Hours And It Was Amazing! Seats Are Comfy. Amazing Views I Can Go On And On
I would choose a train most of the time, but usually the cost is crazy!
sounds like sharp pain in the back
Planes may be for faster destinations but trains are a real journey!
It’s at least a 14x better experience than a plane so it’s worth it
Using trains is also much more of a green option as opposed to flying, I prefer it whenever I'm going anywhere top far from home but just close enough for the train
The problem is every time a freight train comes, they have the right of way. Wish Amtrak had their own lines. Would cut the time in half!
It just needs good scheduling probably! Whatever they do in Europe. They use the same lines but they must have a good system for deciding who uses them when.
Went from Newark to Tampa with a roomette.i just used the room to sleep and shower. Spent the rest of the time in the bar car, but that's just me😂
It all depends on how you feel and what you’re willing to do with the time.
"..beautiful Sacramento CA.." LMAO
Fun fact: in some cases, if you include all the airport stuff, like crowds, security, etc. trains can actually be faster than a plane!
Personally I enjoy riding on trains 💯👍😎
Train is the way to go
Trains, hands down. We just need to electrify them, make them 110mph avg, and most of all GIVE THEM PRIORITY OVER FRIEGHT. That's the real issue, freight, and their 4 mile long trains with one engineer 🙄
thats a long time, but i live in boston so i might take an amtrak to nyc one day
