Its strange now. I'm 39 and can appreciate the sound of this siren although I was absolutely traumatized by this very model siren when I was 7 years old. I was standing very near the base of a thunderbolt 1000 while playing on the playground in kindergarten with a friend and even though teachers new the siren schedule so that they could bring us in before it sounded for a test, I guess that day they lost track of time and the siren sounded and I lost it. I went ballistic and started crying. I've always had issues with loud noises, explosions, gunshots, etc but the sound of that siren affected me like no other loud noise has in my nearly 40 years on the earth. The wind up and wind down can still sometimes send a slight chill up my spine and ever so briefly I go back to 7 year old me and remember how my mom who was a teacher at that school used to arrange for the counselor to come get me from class a few minutes before the siren sounded. She would take me to her office that was in the middle of the school away from any windows, and she would turn on her little boom box radio and turn the volume up to drown out any remnant of sound from the scary siren. But now as an adult it's not so bad. I actually get a sense of nostalgia if/when I hear one of these dying breeds. #SavetheThunderbolts
I feel the same way. As a kid, I used to be absolutely terrified of loud noises and tornado sirens were some of the worst sounds to hear. Not only are they loud, but they signal a potentially imminent disaster and they always have this eerie sound from this distance. I've since overcome my fears and now I try to record them whenever I get a chance to. The same goes for tornadoes as well.
Im 22 now and my elemtary school had a roof mounted single tone 'bolt that sounds very similar to this one and it used to scare the crap out of me at recess when I wasnt ready for it. Those blowers really do pack a punch! I also lived just across the street from the school so there was no escape! The siren was sadly removed almost 9 years ago and my heart is still broken to this day. EDIT: This is the only known video of the siren: ua-cam.com/video/1nunUiquB_g/v-deo.html
That’s literally me. I’m pretty autistic and have had that loud noise problem as a kid. Except primarily with school fire alarms, and the tornado siren under certain conditions. The sudden and very loud sound of the alarm would startle me so bad. I absolutely hated it. Keep in mind, these fire alarms are Gentex Commander 3 and 4 alarms, set to the mechanical tone at high decibel level, the kind of alarm meant for factories and malls, used in tight classrooms. So excuse me for being autistic and dealing with that kind of crap. The counselor or my case manager would take me outside before fire drills so the alarm wouldn’t bother me. During my later high school years I would get the dates and times fire drills were scheduled so I could put headphones on and blast my favorite music through. That really helped drown them out. (I’m serious. The Gentex Commander 3 and 4 set to the mechanical tone at high level is absolutely no joke. Just look it up.)
I knew they had a single tone one somewhere in the system, nice to know which one it is now! I think one of them is major-toned as well but I don't know which one it is, and I've also heard rumors that the one on the hospital is also single tone but I've never heard it.
The bearings sound like they might need maintenance, seems to hiccup on the wind-down. Also looks like the screen has seen better days. Either way, nice video!
Carlos Aponte they should put ball bearings in the blower instead of friction since friction bearings wear down alot faster but put ball bearings in it and it should be relaxed!
The motor that the chopper is powered by has two sets of bearings, small steel balls in a case around the stem that are lubricated, and as the grease wears down, these bearings start to seize, causing the hiccups.
it may hick up, or have a broken screen, which can be replace with pretty much anything so it doesnt matter, but other then those 2 things, this is the healthiest bolt i ever heard

DSRX100 Nope lol, I live in Missouri. Where I live we used to have 2 thunderbolts but now we have one because the other one was broken. So they replace T-121 but thank god they didn’t take down the other one.

The bearings are a bit tired, winds down faster than normal. Also why it hiccups
Dont all 1000 Model Thunderbolts hiccup on wind downs? But yeah, sounds a bit sad.
Sure seems like it, but no
Yeah, that thing needs to be fixed before the Chopper goes to the fritz.
Ok
Carlos Aponte they should put ball bearings in the blower instead of friction since friction bearings wear down alot faster but put ball bearings in it and it should be relaxed!
What causes the 1000 to have a hiccup in the wind down?
Yup, bad bearings.
The motor that the chopper is powered by has two sets of bearings, small steel balls in a case around the stem that are lubricated, and as the grease wears down, these bearings start to seize, causing the hiccups.
Tyler Davis dumb friction useless bearings, if it were rolling element bearings it wouldn't hiccup as much but instead wind down slower and nicely
Bad bearings

The attack wail has this little choppy thing at the end of a single wail. Whats up with that?
•Cookie Crumbz• The hiccup? Just where the bearings for the chopper are catching due to poor lubrication is my guess.
