  • A guide to the SkyWatcher AZ-EQ5 GT Pro SynScan dual purpose Equatorial and Alt-Azimuth mount.
    In this video we take a detailed look at the SkyWatcher AZ-EQ5 GT Pro SynScan dual purpose Equatorial and Alt-Azimuth mount.t. It’s a small mount with a big name, but this dual role mount from SkyWatcher is the little brother of the highly successful AZ-EQ6 - and well deserves its big name. Our video shows you the most important points to consider. We’ve left out a detailed description of the V4 handset and the ‘Freedom-Find’ dual encoder system as we have covered them elsewhere (Star Discovery 150P) and these features have now become familiar on all the latest high specification mountings from this manufacturer. Don’t forget to subscribe if you want to see more videos like this.

    My Newtonian tube is 11kg (N 200/1200 Skyliner Classic). Balancing the mount it requires to have both the counterweights to the very end of the extension rod. When the weight is balanced in RA and DEC the stepper motors have no problem turning the telescope. But I doubt that you can balance a 15 kg payload as described in the specifications

    As an owner of a Losmandy GM-8, considering an upgrade to Go-To operation via their Gemini 2 Upgrade Kit, the cost of this SkyWatcher AZ-EQ5 GT Pro SynScan mount, is less than than the upgrade cost. While SkyWatcher isn't manufactured from CNC machined and anodized aluminum, it sure packs a punch value-wise.

    A good review and I like the foldable tripod pier versus the standard clunky tripods on Chinese mounts which require installing the spreader to stabilize the legs.
    One area missing is the height of the dovetail on this mount, especially in equatorial mode. Looks low, so not necessarily a good match for longer length refractors.
    As a Canadian one has to search a UK web site to get cognitive information on this mount. Recently, SkyWatcher Canada shut down its office, no wonder
    any inquiry sent to them fell on deaf ears.

    Shame I was hoping to see how tall if stands with legs fully extended. Hopefully that is as tall as it can extend because that is pretty short but low enough a small child would be able to look into a telescope. I am interested in this mount for entry level astroimaging hard debate over getting this or the AVX I wanted the Orion Sirius with the ED80 but they're sold out will not be back in stock till the middle of April I am very impatient to wait that long. They really should've had them in a ware house I don't know why they didn't have them on stand by when they ran out, 2 months to wait now for them to build them.

    Very good review, I’m planning to buy it but I'm reading issues of serious slop in the RA, DEC wobble, requirement to do re-alighment to worm gear. Things like that which was not fixed even when the mount sent to manufacturer, I'm not sure how serious these all as I'm new to astronomy. Any advise please!

    Very good review. Just one thing. I wondered when you mentioned the EQ5 Pro and it´s 18 kg of load capacity. You meant to say EQ6 Pro right?

    • @RocketPlanet
      @RocketPlanet  8 років тому

      +Jeppe Thaning Hi and thanks for your query. No, I was referring to the HEQ5 Pro - the stated capacity of that mount is 18kg and I suggested that 12 to 13kg was a more realistic figure for reliable and repeatable imaging. The N/EQ-6 Pro is rated at 25kg for visual with the typical imaging payload capacity trimmed down to 17/18kg. So quite a bit more capacity than the HEQ5 Pro. I hope this helps. KR RJD ANTV

      Hi, but when you gon on the skywatcher web site, at least in Canada and US, HEQ5 load capacity is 13.7 Kilos and EQ6 Pro 18 kilos, quite confusing i must say.

    • @diogod126
      @diogod126 8 років тому

      kim smart I have to be realistic to you, with a 500mm focal length your telescope is better for low mag (bright and large galaxies and nebulae), but if you don't care about that, with a 5mm eyepiece and the 2X barlow you have 200X, which is more or less the limit of your telescope. That magnification is enough for pretty good images of Jupiter and maybe Saturn rings in good seeing conditions.

    is this mount stable, please? is it as stable as the classic mount?

    • @RocketPlanet
      @RocketPlanet  5 років тому

      Hi there, well it was a debatable point. In the form we presented, the mini pier tripod made it less likely that the AZ-EQ5 was as stable as the HEQ5 Pro mount (that you refer to as the 'classic') in my opinion. The narrow base geometry of the tripod and the fixed set point of the head, made the mount less resistant to mechanical interference (wind, oscillations caused by momentum transfer within the mount etc). But this mount/tripod combination has been discontinued (in the UK and Europe anyway) in favor of the standard field tripod. So that potential weakness has been eliminated and I think the performance now, as regards stability, is equal to the 'classic'. I hope this helps. KR RJD A&NTV

      @@RocketPlanet : Hi, The term "classic" I used is a standard tripod, compared to a tripod type column, as can be selected on this product spécification (two option : 'satandard(classic tripod) or 'column' tripod..) on this site : www.pierro-astro.com/materiel-astronomique/montures/montures-alt-azimutales/monture-az-eq5-gt-pro-goto_detail .
