  • If you haven't heard of The Artist's Way... Yes you have. It's that book everybody on UA-cam keeps recommending to cure your art block/find yourself/become who you are meant to be/other lovely sounding, vague positivity.
    The thing is, I didn't want to read this book. But my friends kept insisting... So I finally picked up. Needless to say I was very skeptical initially... I mean, the writing is so. dang. cheesy. But after I read literally the first actual chapter (past the introduction), I... yeah.
    I changed my mind.

    I also find it funny how us artist sabotage ourselves as we think "oh but my art is not so creative, zero storytelling, it sucks" etc but for the people on the outside or non artist they only see the art work and think oh my god this person is amazing, they are able to create something great. So i think it's also important to remember that even though we might see other people posting art every day or art that is 'better' than ours, someone might think this about our art.

      You are SO RIGHT! This is very well put. And I do find it annoying when artists I look up to talk so negatively about their work, and yet - self-criticism is the easiest thing to default to. Thanks for the reminder to be a little gentler. After all, even though nothing we make is perfect, it might be the thing that connects with somebody... and that's definitely worth something.

    This is my first video of yours that im watching, immediately subbing cause I feel super relateable to everything youre saying. Especially the resistance towards the book at all and also not quite feeling fulfilled by what we make. I wanna say well done for committing to the practice despite the skepticism and cheese ❤❤

    I loved the story! As someone who’s ALL ABOUT THAT CHEESE, I’ll share with you a quote that came to my mind when listening to the video:
    “It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better.     I randomly found the book in a book store last weekend - and bought it. And now I stumbled upon your video! I have decided to read the whole thing before starting, so I can plan things easier, since you don't get that much free time with two small kids...
    It will be interesting to see what your impressions are during the process 😊

      Oh, fun! :D If you believe in signs, there's a lot piling up for you ;)
      If I may - I think it's probably best to read the book as you go, chapter by chapter. The reason I say that is because each chapter builds upon your experience with the previous one. So if you don't have that experience, the writing may end up feeling annoying/detached/etc. There's also (imo) benefits in having a fresh outlook. As in, when you take too much time to mull things over, you can end up intellectualizing things that were meant to speak to your intuition, your first thoughts. Ya know?
      Maybe giving yourself two weeks instead of one might be a way to read as you go, but with less pressure to fit in the assignments in little time? There isn't that much *to do* in the end; mostly journaling exercices, some of which you can easily skip depending on your preferences.
      In any case, I really hope you enjoy it! I'd love to hear how you get on with it :D

    Hi! I loved your video:) I tried the artist's way last year but i could only get to week 2 before I started to feel that it wasn't meant for me. I would be very interested in how you view the book on week 3 or even after finishing it:) Have a nice creative journey!

      Thank you!! Yeah, I understand not meshing with it. I think it’s working for me so far because I’m also reading it ‘at the right time’. Had I picked it up 2 years ago, I’m not sure it would have resonated with me as much! I will probably make an update video later on in the journey too then :) Best wishes, creative! ✨
