Thanks for the shout. I never had an issue with mine not working but you do have to manually remove the tape and not put it in the compost matey lol Great update

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert. However, I would force the large crown of Rhubarb to give the smaller crown a chance to build strength. Forcing weakens the crown, so you might be able to get them equally productive next year. 😊

I didn't see your comment until I scrolled down after writing mine. I couldn't agree with you more. I too would force the stronger crown as forcing considerably weakens a crown. Happy gardening 😃

I'll let you on my secret for getting cardboard, our Tony. Head to Halfords. They have massive boxes twice a week in my area because of the bicycles. I've had the same cardboard down since early October on some of my beds and they are still going strong.

Great video Tony pal garden coming on now. Tony with potatoes try putting black plastic down on your bed just hold it down round edges with soil then slit the plastic put a potato 4 or 5inch down in rows as normal. Then you don't even have to row them up cos plastic is stopping the light turning them green. Then when ready just peel plastic back and take what's needed mate. I've done it twice now works a treat.

Hi Tony, i have bought my big bag of chopped rape seed straw a few weeks ago same as yours. I used some today in my fruit cage, removing last years mulch and a few inches of compost too pn all my pots. Toped up with a layer of compost and tape seed hay on top, getting them ready for the Spring. I also mulched my beds in my polytunnel to last summer to help with retaining moisture with the hot summer & worked well. Great video update. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊

I totally agree with you on the worst tool ever... 🙈 I threw mine like 20 meters in to the woods in anger last summer 😂😂😂 My dad picked it up the day after and asked if we should put it on the wall for target sho*ting with darts. 🙈 😂 😂 😂 😂

In the USA we have a thing called EZ straw. It's fine chopped stray. It CLAIMS to be 99% weed seed free but I was pulling weeds from it all summer. 😡 I'm going back to fine saw dust, I KNOW there's no weed seed in that.

Hi Tony I use Equinola and on the packing it’s says horse bedding. I use it as a mulch on the top of my potato containers, also when I am short of browns in my compost containers. Think it’s great stuff and it easily breaks down. You do get the odd mushroom type plant growing from it on the potato buckets. Purchased mine in 2022 on line via Amazon and still have some left, cost me £17, now £22 per bag, like to know where you get it for £8 per bag.

It says online: "Strulch is made from wheat straw with added iron minerals."
So essentially if you soaked your straw in something perhaps like Chelated Iron, probably be the same thing haha!
Only thing I would say is to just be carful to try and source straw that's not been sprayed with herbicides as that can kill your plants.

  • @Colinking2127

You can get the horse bedding with eucalyptus added smell lovely. I use the poultry bedding, the same stuff with eucalyptus added. As I can not get wood chips, I also use it for my paths. Good to see you back at it.

Good idea Tony. I got fed up with the grass coming from mulching with straw and got some pet wood shavings this year. That stretch might be okay for a little strawberry or artichoke bed but it's too expensive for general use for me. I hope you don't get rapeseed shoots from that straw. Let's hope it's been sterilised.

Is there not a risk of Aminopyralid contamination with something like the rape straw? Not knowing the source, and the unfortunate likelihood of them using broad leaf weed killers when growinh would be a concern, as this could contaminate the soil...

I agree with you, about the worst tool ever. I worked in a garden nursery and we were given that horrible tool to tie up the hundreds of climbers we had. It would jam up, not tie the staple on or just stop the tape through Frustrating. I eventually got my boss to ditch that and we tied up with raffia . less plastic used and and less swearing . !!!

call me cynical but the leaves beds are weed free and the hay beds and strulch beds are not😅, on a serious note are we paying for something we maybe dont need? would a wood chip layer be more effective?

Tony, we are lucky enough to have a local brewery which delivers used malt hops to our allotment site as they are a waste product and they save money by giving them to us rather than paying to dispose them. I use them for mulching my beds. Not only is it good as a weed suppressor and excellent for water retention but the crops, especially rhubarb smell and taste fantastic. Haydn

  • @bewoodford2807
    @bewoodford2807 8 місяців тому

Great info on the Strulch substitute. Rhank you. I would have forced the stronger rhubarb plant, and leave the weaker crown to build further. You will weaken that plant and it will take ages to recover. You should only force a string crown. and not every year but only every 3 years or so. Forcing takes a lot out of a plant. Happy gardening 😃

Your homemade compost always looks so good when you spread it on the beds. It looks as if it is dry and crumbly enough to sieve and I wondered if you could use it for seed sowing or potting on etc. I have started sieving mine and using it for seeds and pricking out without any problems so far. My compost is not so crumbly as yours and I have to lay it out on trays in the greenhouse to dry it enough to be able to sieve it.

  • @GARDENER42

I use grass clippings from the lawn to cover the tops of my potato tubs. They're free & break down rapidly.
For building height in raised beds, I scrounge topsoil from wherever I can, including mole hills at this time of year, leaving 1-2" of space for an annual application of compost.
I recorded the amount of compost going into my 30 litre potato tubs last year (900 litres) then what I was left with (600 litres).
Clearly, compost isn't the answer to filling raised beds on a permanent basis.
I use the double sided velcro tape for tomatoes - still using the same pieces after 3-4 years.
