Will definitely be making this again. My husband requested this and I happened to have the ingredients on hand so I made this today, I live at 5300' and made no adjustments for altitude. I used a 8x8 baking dish because that's what I had on hand, and mine took about 70 minutes to bake, I covered it with foil at the 45 minute mark so it wouldn't burn on top. Mine also sank a bit in the middle, I think that was an altitude issue, but either way this coffee cake is absolutely delicious. Not too sweet, the cake is perfect (take the time to cream the butter & sugar together properly), the crumble is perfect. I was skeptical that there isn't any butter in the crumble, but this really doesn't need it. I did incorporate the chopped pecans in mine. Thank you ATBBQ! ETA: I don't have the turbinado sugar called for in the recipe so I used that amount additional of brown sugar. The next time I make this I'll just exclude the turbinado and not increase the amount of brown sugar, I had quite a bit of the crumble mix leftover, which could have to do with the fact that I used an 8x8 dish.
I want to thank you. Yes, the recipe is marvelous. But I am thanking you for illustrating how loosening the mixing bowl while still mixing reduces the amount of "stopping-and-scraping." I remember a video by America's Test Kitchens concluded that their favorite stand mixer was the KitchenAid, because it's tools got closest to the bowl walls reducing the amount of scrapping required. It never occurred to me that you could detach the bowl and manipulate the mixing process (2:28). Now I'm definitely in the market for a stand mixer...and some sour cream coffee cake. Thanks again.
Detaching the bowl? Kids, don't try this at home. :) Looks amazing. Merry Christmas, chef to you and the crew! Looking forward to what you have in store for 2022.
Agreed. The heads on those KA mixers are designed to be easily user-adjustable to reduce the attachment to bowl clearance. Much safer and less trouble than detaching the bowl.
In the 60s coffee cake, and a lot of other stuff, doughnuts, were made for dunking into the coffee. the cake structure captured a lot of coffee and was a tasty sweet and savery bit.
Just thought I’d throw this out there… but there is an adjustment screw to adjust how close the attachment get to the bowl your mixer might be out of alignment. Thanks for the content
Anyone else notice how easily his knife went through pan as well as cake like it wasn’t even there x3 I mean it’s foil yeah but still. Impressive recipe as always chef Tom!
Merry Christmas Tom, I have a YS640s (upgraded from a traeger timberline 850) which I use to cook porchetta, pork belly ect. and achieved the cracking very easily.. high heat, then reducing to lower heat for the rest of the cook.. im really struggling on the yoder to achieve crackling, and always have to finish it up under the broiler.. ive recently posted on the Yoder FB site.. really would like to hear your thoughts, as I'm sure it can be done.. Cheers, all the best for 2022 Loving all your recipes 🤘🏻
If I were gay I’d try to marry you, you cook everything and anything on a grill. Thanks for so many amazing videos and helping me to be a better back yard cook. Happy New Year Tom!
Chef Tom is a wild man! Look at him wrangling that mixing bowl with his bare hands! Fearless!

I have been cooking all my life….I’m 66. I’ve never thought to tilt my Kitchenaid bowl to get the sides. Nice trick!
that can’t be good for the whisk attachment through

Hello I would like to transfer the recipe into keto version😀 One question though; can you cook this cake in the oven? And for long? Thanks 😊
If I were gay I’d try to marry you, you cook everything and anything on a grill.
Thanks for so many amazing videos and helping me to be a better back yard cook.
Happy New Year Tom!
My wife wants know if her grandmother used smoked turbinado sugar?! Jk, it looks great Tom!
Oooooo 👍🏾🙏🏾
Tell me… I always hear about kosher salt in receipes… what is the difference to regular salt?
It's a course ground salt that doesn't have iodine.
Don't know why but I was expecting there to be coffee in it. Than realized it is just coffee cake( the cake you dunk in coffee)
So, how much did you have to bribe the in-laws for permission to give us Grandma's recipe? Can't wait to make...
Tom, PLEASE learn how to adjust your mixer bowl. look up the "dime test"
Today I learned coffee cake doesnt have coffee in it
Maybe im The fifth comment
Just watching the bowl being moved around made me not want to watch.
I was expecting coffee in it. .. must be a. American thing. Chef Tom uses coffee on brisket but not coffee cake. ... Interesting.. :)
Haha. Our coffee cake is meant to be eaten while drinking coffee 😊
