Harry F. Powers (born Harm Drenth) was a Dutch-born American serial killer who was hanged in Moundsville, West Virginia. Powers lured his victims through "Lonely Hearts" ads, claiming he was looking for love, but ultimately murdering them for their money.

Sad because it’s happening more and more. Mothers letting just acquired boyfriends watch their precious children even babies while they go to work. Many of them have JUST gotten out of prison, only to come home to murdered children

Reminds me of Edward Andrews, character actor from the 60s and 70s in shows like Boris Karloff's "Thriller." And so many other shows, even Bewitched. You will know him when you see him.

I am in tears at this horror. I cannot understand nor wish to, how anyone could do this. I served 32 years in the UK prison service and met many killers. Lots of them appeared normal but their true nature came through when denied something. They demand respect but rarely show it. I found this site by chance when looking into the Nutty Putty cave. I am impressed with the respect and dignity that you show the forgotten people. To see their faces is sobering. Thank you.
Con artists and serial killers have always been around. We just hear more about it now because of technology. May those poor people rest in peace.

My neighbor said you can’t get scammed on Christian mingle. She’s 65, overweight, and well you can imagine….she gets a picture of a navy military officer 40 and fit, handsome. I’m like you have to ask yourself what a man like that would want with you. Also, reverse image search. She’s like I trust him. She’s now out $700 and his profile is gone. What a surprise. I tried to help her, but when people are so desperate for a fairytale it’s almost impossible to help them.
my stepfather was an old friend of the family, promised my mother he'd give her four children everything they needed and even adopted us. he did it for business reasons: a family man is good for business. he was a murderer and even looked like Powers

These women already seem to have some decent money in the bank. Very sad that the children were killed in his evil plans also. What a monster.
Such a sad story, back in the day women were raised to become house wives, mothers, and anything in between. If a husband died, or left you, it put them in a vulnerable spot. They had no training, or means to support their children, or it would be a menial job. A women was dependent on a man, for safety, love, and support. It seems this vile slithering little creature took advantage of this women's feeling for his own prospects. I hope he went back to where he came. The poor children, the fear they must have felt is beyond comprehension. Women, and men need to pay attention to the red flags, if something doesn't seem right, it probably isn't. Thanks Ron

I heard bits & pieces of this story when I was a kid. My parents grew up in Hodgeville (Hacker's Creek), WV. Quiet Dell is still just a little unincorporated spot near there, on the way to Clarksburg. Didn't realize how close this guy lived to my grandparents'.
The character played by Robert Mitchum in the movie "Night of the Hunter" was loosely based on this man , they even used the same name for the preacher that Mitchum played. The movie scared me as a kid.
I remember watching it and it was very scary.

What a predator! They've always been around in some shape or form over the centuries. No conscience and no remorse to slow him down. I'm glad he got caught, as you mentioned, they could get away with a lot more many years ago. May his victims rest in peace.❤️

I found out from watching a documentary that Match.com owns all the dating site out there and how they where informed by women of a raper using their site. Any way they did nothing about it and quess what serial killer was using their site in a year alone 95 women murdered and over 460 women raped. And dating site can not be touch cause they hide under some internet law.

Thank you for another thought provoking historical story, with a great deal of current relevance. Harry Powers' Dutch Christian name 'Harm' was appropriate and prophetic. Bad people like him seem to exploit the technology of their time. Unfortunately I think he'd be even more dangerous online in 2021!

Hi Ron I am from Australia and do enjoy the stories . My husbands father passed away tuesday he didn't want a funeral just to be cremated .So life goes on . We are going to have a wake for him and my late mother in law at our local Boat Club father in law was a life member so looking forward to that. Keep up the good work.

For years I have been fasinated visiting Cave Hill Cemetery. SO much history. The old crypts are very spooky, looking inside them. I Googled crypts and Creepy Crypts & Catacombs Worldwide came up and WOW !!!! To say I was shocked is putting it mildly !! Keep up the good work, I love this site. And people for years have said I'm strange for my interest in "graveyards" !

Don't tell people what you have. A man with a house right on the bay in Newport Beach, CA (house worth millions) answered an ad from a great-looking young blond woman that said "You take care of me and I'll take care of you." She ended up either moving in with him or marrying him (not sure which) and you can guess the rest. She left a side door open so her football player boyfriend could come in and kill him. He left behind a brain-damaged son who had to deal with the trauma of finding his father's body. I wonder what happened to the son because I don't know how much of his father's money she was able to steal. Living on some relative's living room couch? A dump in L.A. on SSI?

I love my beautiful home state of WV but it seems we have had more than our share of tragedies and horrific events that have occurred here. Several years ago I toured the old Moundsville prison and you can go in where they did the hangings. Never have I ever felt so creeped out about a place in my life. To think of all the evil monsters that were kept there!!
My paternal grandparents met through a lonely hearts club. My grandmother's parents (great grandparents) disliked my grandfather so much that they disowned my grandmother when she married anyway. Suffice it to say that they were right about my grandfather. My grandparents married in 1919. My dad was the eldest of 6 kids was born in 1920. In 1928, my grandmother died 3 weeks after the birth of her.last child. I truly hope she found some happiness. She paid a very high price.

Lots of significant American culture tied into this story that is not presented here. Davis Grubb was a child living near Quiet Dell when this happened. As an adult he became a novelist and in 1952 wrote "The Night of the Hunter" inspired by his memories of Harry Powers. He changed the name to Harry Powell. The 1955 classic film based on the novel starred Robert Mitchum as Powell, and also featured Shelley Winters and Peter Graves. Also, Asta Eicher's husband was a silversmith at the famous Kalo Arts Colony on Northwest Highway in Park Ridge. From 1913 to 1915, soon-to-be-famous artist Grant Wood ("American Gothic") joined the Kalo group and set up his studio in the Eicher's barn, which is still standing behind the house at 312 Cedar Street. Wood moved into the barn for a summer. Such an odd, unusual intersection of murder, Hollywood, and classic American art, all emanating from the same house, which is now a historic landmark in Park Ridge.

Crazy people still work dating sites for victims....even UA-cam, Facebook, Pinterest! I’m amazed that a widow with children had any money in the middle of the Great Depression, that was before any social security death benefits & most people didn’t have life insurance. 4K was a lot of money!

What happened to Luella? Where is she burried? As u were walking, u passed several graves with last name Weller. It looks like many died as infants. Born in December n died in January n July. Wonder what the story is with this family?

In my 20s I put an ad In a singles newspaper. One of the respondents was a convict in Super Max. I sent him a polite letter advising I had met someone and wishing him luck.
He got out on parole. Over the next month or two, he killed three women.
I tell this story to friends who think dating on line is safe.
