Professor DM from DungeonCraft with additional context. Kelsey was a friend of a friend. She contacted me in December 2022 offered to send me a PDF for review. I said I'd read it, but couldn't make any promises. Then I read it and was blown away. I said I'd review it and gave her a blurb for promotional purposes. I released my review on the same day the KS started, which I try to do when I can. I never said "this is not a paid review" in the video because I just forgot. (I'm not sure why this is a requirement anyway. Siskel and Ebert never said "Martin Scorsese did not pay us for this review of Goodfellas," but I digress). Today, Kelsey and I are personal friends, and we exchange gifts. Most recently, I bought her Wingspan and she bought me butterscotch root beer. To his credit, Pundit apologized to me for his posts. I accepted his apology and I said I considered the matter closed. I have never said anything bad about Pundit, or any other UA-camr or Game designer, and I never will. My personal Ethos comes from the noted warrior-philosopher Caesar (from Planet of the Apes, not the Roman Emperor): "Ape not kill Ape. Together, Ape strong." I watched some of Pundits stuff and the more I watched the more I would see him insutling people who were making good stuff, if he had people on to promote their stuff or the show he done woth others he would sort of put himself above them in terms of "I am a better creator" very passive aggressive as well.

I really like Shadowdark and I really like Kelsey though I've never met her. One of the things that I like about her is that I have NO IDEA what her politics are. She's a young, married lesbian so I can assume she's a bit lefty. But that's the thing: I have to assume because she has never even suggested any kind of political stance on any issue. Considering how often people feel the need to shove their politics into everything, this is wonderful breath of fresh air.
Not that it matters, but I'd put it out there that the assumption should probably go the other way. Given the boxes she ticks off and the current landscape of mainstream gaming, there are little to no downsides to professing Left-leaning ideology as a creator. In fact, I'd say there are a lot of benefits to doing so. I'd assume the fact that she's been so notably silent implies a possible lean to the right, or most likely a stance somewhere in the center - which is just as bad as Alt-Right to most leftist culture warriors these days. Either way, it makes zero difference to me as long as it stays out of the game.

In regards to the game it's really no mystery why it did so well. I've been aware of here brand since she started it in 2017, if I remember the year right, and she had been steadily building a base of WOTC 5E players for about 6 years prior to the Kickstarter and that's who mostly bought it. Sure there were others outside the WOTC crowd that bought in for various reasons but the bulk was her brand fans. We know the WOTC crowd's general social leanings so it's no surprise they rushed to back a lesbian with a 'wife'. It's great she doesn't put her politics into the game but to think that it didn't have anything to do with it's sales seems to be a lack of attention.
If you need another example of this dynamic look no further than the MCDM fiasco. How much did that raise? And he hasn't even provided a tangible product but he's a woke leftist so the hardcore WOTC fans filled his coffers.

1:36:38 When the new 5e Planescape book came out it had a character "THACO The Clown" and Pundit thought it was a dig at him. This account THACO Warrior with a clown pfp looks like a reference, but it could just be a coincidence.

So it's nice to see you guys bring out the tweets and receipts for the compare & contrast. I don't need to believe your words (I would, I respect your work on the channel), RPGPundit put it all on the internet to contradict himself to begin with.

I defended Pundit because I believed he was a good guy and now I feel stupid I didn't know any of this stuff because I'm not on X or entrenched in this drama. That's my fault for being uninformed. My beef with SD was never its success but rather it's a repurposed Five Torches Deep but with less flare and she reaped all the praise and awards for a game she pretty much, didn't add anything new to. I'm not OSR and I don't buy clones but 5TD did different things and pretty much went under the radar, while SD stole it's thunder. That being said I had no idea I was being manipulated and thank you guys for sharing this information with us.
I agree up to an extent to you guys when it comes to Shadowdark, but I also think the truth is somewhere in the middle or at least justifiable up to the point where people start treating Kelsey like an evil mastermind. She seems like a genuinely great person and it's deserving of being successful. She did the right thing by building an email newsletter (advice that Kevin Crawford, the creator of the "Without Number" games also gave), she did good praxis towards her followers and created a system that serves the type of game it's intended to run (compared to something like "The World's Most Popular RPG").
I don't have an issue with the system or the creator, but I have an issue with the marketing and what it entails for the hobby. She didn't do anything illegal or immoral, but it still doesn't feel fair for a lot of people, myself included. It happened at just the right moment and it was coordinated, just not in the malevolent way some people try to imply. Having a lot of the P&P UA-camrs as acquaintances and friends meant that those people wanted to help her because she was a nice person that did create something good. The issue is that even though it was organic, it didn't feel like it. Some of the most influential UA-camrs (and some of the less known ones that wanted to jump on the hype train) overhyped Shadowdark as the next big thing to a public that largely didn't know better (that's the fault of the public though) and in a very short time span. Not even big names in the OSR scene like Gavin Norman or Matt Finch have access to such an aggressive marketing; their reputation and the reputation of their games were build at a snail pace compared to Shadowdark, thus perceived as organic.
For a small creator, having some of the biggest P&P UA-camrs on your side is like having one of the best marketing teams available, if not the best (WOTC & Hasbro really underestimate how important YouTuners were in building and maintaining D&D 5e popularity high). I am salty because of the success of Shadowdark, but not because I have something with the creator or the game, but because I see how successful it is and I see other games that are far more deserving, yet don't come even close to it (ex: Adventurer Conqueror King 2e, Streets of Peril, Hyperborea 3e, Weird Frontiers RPG etc).
I also worry that this level of networking, even though it's not done with ill intent, will affect the hobby negatively because it will lead to a situation were a few people will be "dictating" what's popular and what's just there. Remember that that's an even bigger thing because were heading towards a future were no system will be as dominant as D&D 5e was in the last few years. Shadowdark is a game that deserves to be successful, but the degree of it's success is overwhelmingly do to marketing mobilization of hobby influential persons and that sucks even if they were (mostly) just friends trying to help another friend. I know that in this field (and beyond it), hard work and quality doesn't always translate to being the most successful, but God is my witness, I would had loved to live in a timeline where Shadowdark did 330k USD while ACKS 2e did close to 1.4 million USD...
If the worry is that bigger UA-camrs will become taste makers, the solution is for more people to become bigger UA-camrs and become taste makers in parallel and show off the games they like by the creators they like.
@@blacklodgegames That takes a lot of time and the big UA-camrs don't freeze in time. I'm forever thankful to you guys for making me knowledgeable of Streets of Peril, but the reach you guys have compared to someone like Professor DM is minuscule. By the time you deservedly reach +130k subs, the Professor will also be better of than he's today + trends in the hobby will be build and the influence of "taste makers" will already be strong. Yes, what you say is really the only thing one can do, but as things look, the people with the most popular friends will have the most popular systems and that sucks.
@@Iulian111 I do not agree with this mentality. It accepts defeat before even trying. People who want to be profitable by selling their games *must* take the necessary steps to build themselves up, first and foremost, and to network as much as they can.
We are not going to be embraced with open arms by everyone in the UA-cam space, and we know that. But it will not stop us from promoting our own material and attempting to build up other people as well. I don't know if we will be successful, but it would be better if more people at least *tried*.
The headstart that major channels have is not bad for anyone, and their growth does not hinder the growth of others. Niches are narrow but deep, it just takes concentrated effort and a willingness to recognize when a strategy isn't working so you can adjust.
@@blacklodgegames I agree with the first two parts of your statement, but I disagree with the "their growth does not hinder the growth of others" part if you're referring to the growth of system as I do. The influence of the bigger hobby related channels are a major contributing part of the reason why D&D 5e stayed dominant for so long up to the point WOTC estranged them and other people with their repeated screw-ups, the OGL scandal being the biggest one up to date. I don't want another similar situation even if it won't be to the same extent as with D&D 5e. I want a situation where people talk about lots of systems like you and people like Books, Bricks and Boards do.
Regardless, I hope people don't stop at Shadowdark and finally learn that it's generally better to use a system designed for the type of game you want to run instead of trying to find an "universal" system. Cheers!

I love his games, his attention to detail and his ability to make the feel of the setting just come out from paper...but as a person (or at least as a content creator) he is a bit...unhinged, but I guess this is a part of being creative soul
Pundit's most useful function is as a sanity check: does he think something is good design? Redesign it. Immediately.
You fellas might remember one of my first comments to you was an appreciation for your tendency to explain why you think what you do about games, even when we disagree. And that it wasn't an argument from Primacy: it's good because it was like this first. I "appreciate" Pundit for the opposite, when he does explain himself, an argument from Primacy is the best he can do. It's helpful to know people who hate your games do so entirely for irrational and intractable reasons so you can discard their feedback and pay attention to people who actually matter.
Its annoying. You cant point out the genuinely bizarre stuff about Shadow Dark's success (winning an Ennie for best layout and design when UVG was there and Kelsey herself said those aspects of the book were amateur.) without being lumped in with people like this.
Yeah, the Ennie Awards are highly suspect. UVG is an amazing book and should have won.

Do they publish the criteria for the category? I saw this comment and popped both open for a side-by-side, and it struck me that SD is much, much easier to read (which isn’t surprising, given that keeps popping up in reviews). I *absolutely love* UVG and as a work of complete art (not just visual but as a whole package) it is a masterpiece, but it is EXTREMELY informationally dense compared visually to SD. That isn’t a bad thing intrinsically, but I see the argument that one works better as a usable set of tools by some usability metrics.

yeah, I like shadow dark, it's not bad, but I feel like all the shit that's come out the past year.... But like other awards shows of music or movies we know it doesn't really represent what was the best/most unique , and half of that is just personal preference about what a person enjoys, certain factors to me say the shadow dark product deserved success but but at the same time should it have cleaned up on all the awards.....that's a personal opinion/preference different for each person

I took my daughter to NTRPG this year in the hope my daughter could meet Kelsey. Kelsey was gracious as my daughter became a fan girl. Kelsey is a great representative of a female writer in this industry. Shadowdark is a great product and the picture of her and my daughter will always be a great memory. Hopefully she comes back to NTRPG next year.

I would say that there is a huge difference between a paid review and a review where the product was simply sent to someone to be reviewed. One is no different than an infomercial, the other is akin to any other form of book or movie review. I appreciated PDMs review much more than QBs simply because of that. I do not consider simply providing the book to a critic for review to be a paid promotion, rather view it as an industry standard. Now, ultimately the faiest review is one where the item was purchased independently by a reviewer without any affiliation, but true Independence in a smaller community might not always be possible.
@@dethangelsshadow1722 I understand, but if your job is to review games, there is an incentive to maintain a reputation of objectivity. People are paying QB for his opinion, and I'm sure he gets flooded with requests. Reviewing a game takes a significant amount of time that could be used doing other, more lucrative activities, so I get why he charges for it. Huge trade off to balance.
We have significantly less reach and also get a lot of people sending us stuff to look at, so I get it from his perspective.
As for receiving a copy of the game counting as payment, it is not directly analogous to getting a check, but at minimum, youtube's rules state that you need to mark your video as having a paid promotion. It's irritating, but people on the platform should act in good faith with regard to that, imo
The worst part of Pundit is that it's 99% an act of ultimate cynicism for clicks. Then, things like this happen, where his personal jealousies come to surface, and we see what sort of person he truly is. A few years ago, I had to take legal action against him to get him to stop.

Yeah, RPG pundit frequently misrepresents and misquotes material he disagrees with (or can produce clickbait about), in a way that is easily fact checked. Then, if you challenge him, he never backs down, even if he's in the wrong. Still, he seems to love his cat, and he has a kind face, so I don't think he's all bad
.....pundit's latest video on Shadowdark was that he doesn't think there is evidence Kelsey is woke nor did anything malacious marketing.... It came out a day or two ago.

First time I've seen "roll to cast spells" outside of DCC, and it's done in a much cleaner way

I think alot of these complaints missed the mark and were kinda bitter, but ive been joking about things like this for a bit by calling certain youtube creaters the NWO of the youtube ttrpg space, and i believe making up random numbers 25%- 50% of shadowdark success was the reviews/promos from the Ttrpg NWO, and theres nothing wrong with that, thats part of the game, advertising is very important , somewhat like that saying "its not what you know its who you know"
I think many creators are just sad that they have similar products that are just as good but got a fraction of the exposure and dont get credit for basically making a similar game before hand, and seeing another creater
"who supposedly just recently jumped in the osr space" getting all the accolades made them angery/sad, and confused about what they were butt hurt about
The creator of shadow dark put in the work, did a good job, networked like a boss, and had some good timing when releasing it, and was ready for success.

Firstly lemme say I am a Shadowdark backer, player and fan. It’s a great system. I absolutely love Professor DM, Questing Beast, Kelsey and all her notable TTRPG creator friends. I also like and support the RPGPundit, his games and his design philosophies. This is my first time here so I have no idea what sort of material you guys would normally publish but I really think you guys have jumped the shark on this one. Fair enough, they do tend to drip a little more contempt on the word then I think it deserves. I believe the way they mean it in this case, is that RPGPundit's behavior exemplifies the toxic side of femininity, sort of like how masculinity has been confused with it's toxic side by a lot of people. I am not a woman but I think I can empathize with you here given how every time I turn on the TV someone is dragging on about how, useless, and brutish men are. It gets exhausting. Being feminine is a bad thing, for men. This insult absolutely does not apply to women, nor does it imply that women are bad.
