If you start a mix on the right foot, you’re much more likely to succeed.
The fact is, most mixing mistakes are made at the start of the mixing process…
And it’s going backward and having to correct those mistakes that lead to mixing sessions going on for hours and hours!
In this week’s video, Graham shows you the first, crucial step whenever you’re starting a new mix: assembling your static mix.
This video is taken from our flagship mixing course, Mixing University. If you'd like to learn more about the course, go to: mixinguniversity.com/

Love your videos Graham
thanks graham
Great tutorial Graham. It all starts with having a workflow. Once you know the steps, you have a sure fire start and ending to the process.
YES WE HAVE GRAHAM AGAIN!
I actually quit watching for awhile now since graham hasn’t been on. Glad he’s back.
@@blakejackson4483 Same! If I wanted to watch other people's videos, I would subscribe to them
@@djentlover Graham told at the beginning of 2021 that this year is gonna be without him on this channel, because he’s busy writing the book How to Get Paid for What You Know and working on his second channel and business.
I need to give this a try before getting to fancy with plugins. Nice to see you back Graham.
Cheers from Central Florida. The day that gain staging clicked, so did digital mixing. From that day, my mixes already sound great before any EQ or compression. Getting great levels at the source was a game changer. For my style of music, I like to aim for -10 to -14 LUFS
thank you very much! amazing
Go Graham!!
Bravo!
All very good points Graham. As a general statement; Don't overlook the fact that a track could have too much gain on it from the beginning and might require a gain adjustment which would be better than running the fader at -30 since that can affect your fader resolution. Either way, it is all about balance and starting out with success in mind. Thanks for the great content!
How can we avoid this ? I'm confused, because some people talk about mixing at unity and other that you should stay at +3 / -3 range . How ?!
@@yungcbeatz160 read plugin manuals. 0dbVU is usually a place where db hits processing nicely which is -18dbfs. I usually put all my tracks in and level the beat at an avg of 0dbvu. Then I build all my vocals around that. Maybe this makes sense or not but clip gain until -18dbfs avg, THEN move faders where it feels food. This allows the plugins to be hit at their desired level based off the manuals. And then you can sculpt the tracks with moving volume faders
@@yungcbeatz160 when I do this it usually leaves me around -10dbfs going into at my mixbus
This is the way to do it. I don't think many mixers are aware of fader resolution. Great video.

Thank you!
great video.
I always do a static mix. I use dynamic eq and compressor to move it.
God damnit.
I'm new to this and I finally made a song, did all the EQ'ing and reverb and other things and just wanted to start getting some volume in it.
Now I have to start all over again.
I really like your ideology about mixing and the way you explain it. I totally agree with what you said in this tutorial. By the way, greetings from Indonesia, I really hope to meet you in person. Such a great engineer!!
It’s a coincidence that I’m watching this video to help me on a production for my friend who grew up in Indonesia and the song is called Indonesia!
Thanks… Good song too
This is an interesting way to go about it. If you’re writing and mixing at the same time would the concept still apply?
YESSSS
Thanks for this video. Do you pan during the static mix with headphones or monitors?
What's the best way to mix to a 2 track any tips n tricks
Please don't do that giant circle. It actually made me nauseous. Thanks Graham, this will really change how I mix. I got lost watching videos about mixing. Ill call this, going back to my roots. When I knew nothing that's actually what I used to do. Crazy huh. Hey we both went back. 😊
What should one do if the kick drum they’re provided to mix with has way too much snap and high end for the genre? How’re we supposed to appropriately level it?
Yer this is the foundation.
What is the set db level when balancing the mix? Between -9 and -6 db?
Ideally are you doing your static mix in speakers or cans?
I really appreciate the new people in the recent videos but, it's not the same home studio vibe when it's Graham doing the video.
How to start to master
When do you convert midi to audio? Is that before the gain staging for the static mix? Also, when do you switch the monitoring to mono? Is it after the static mix is complete and before the next steps like eq/compression? Thank you
@@glennbob9315 thank you for the info!
So why not lower the master fader? Are you concerned there is clipping already happening at that point?
What would the purpose of lowering the master fader be?
where can i find this song
I know😎
Are faders set to gainer? or, they are just faders, not gainers. I use FL and FL faders are not a gainer
Can we doing gain staging first or to setup volume balancing
As far as I understand, gain staging is typically for if a track itself is recorded too quiet or too hot. It's not about the track's volume relative to the mix. I personally make sure everything is gain staged well before I begin changing volume sliders.
@@DrSauce Thanks Dr. Sauce 😄
Thanks Graham - awesome A little question: When the Static Mix is done and it's time for EQ, do you use EQ with automatic volume compensation? I normally do, but it makes me wonder, is this the wrong way. If I turn down a lot of low end on the track the volume compensation will turn it up and then suddenly the track is brighter in the mix, and I was only trying to adjust too much low end. Does it make sense or am I overthinking ....
There's no right or wrong, if you use automatic volume compensation then you are saving a lot of time compensating manually. Just ensure the compensated volume is not louder than it was before you applied EQ. More power to you brother.
I think you are overthinking. Just use your ears and feeling to see if it is neccessary to compensate and if so, you'll decide how much volume.
no matter how you level it, this song will sound great no matter what. Let me tell you something, no matter how i balance my song, it will always suck. In the "static mix" process i always need to compress or eq so i can't do the so called static mix because to find the sweet spot i need to lower the volume to the point that i can't hear anything. It's frustrating because whenever i lower something i need to lower another thing because it became loud and keep lower until i can't hear anything, reset everything again and the infinite loop continue forever. I don't know if the song is bad composed (nothing is out of tune) and if something is wrong I can't tell what and why. I don't know the difference between gain staging and static mix for sure.
I feel you bro. I got the same problem as you. Dont give up keep practise . Together we rise some day . Who know right?
Q: What software are you using?
Pro Tools
@@sonugupta3044 thx
Don't let the software fool you since this method applies to all recording / mixing software.
l never even knew about volume fader
