I worked at Granduc in the 1980s. The road tunnel you went through was used in the winter to bypass a very avalanche prone stretch of road. Even though they had a full time avalanche management crew, this part of the road was just to dangerous. To use the tunnel, they had to keep the ice out of it as you saw. They did this by installing a diesel generator at one end. It supplied power to 2 large oil fired furnaces that kept the water from freezing. There was also a large door that kept the cold wind from blowing through the tunnel. The green locomotive was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. They were 1500VDC electric locomotives. I did electrical maintenance work on them and on the road tunnel as well. The tunnel you followed down to the train was a conveyor galley that brought the ore from the ore dump up to the mill building. The conveyor was designated 180602 if I remember correctly. I walked that galley a few times as well.
So many times I have explored that tunnel but have never been brave enough to make it to the end. Once again making me homesick, thanks for sharing my home town.
The engine is a mitsubishi electric, the cars are 50 or 100 ton side dump ore cars. (If memory serves me. ) the camp looks like its on the old mill site lower pad.
I spent many yrs doing this , now to I’ll , not ur channel kept me going , when quacks says it my time lol, don’t feel Srry I had best times in live doing this and ur channel awesome , would like to see if can get out ur way sum time, leave u bit money or stuff to keep going and give many people pleasure I had from these streams big thanks
The broken glass cylinder at 11:40 is fillled with silica beads. They are a desiccant to ensure the power transformer can vent air when hot but not draw in moist air when it cools. The power transformer has all those metal pipes to allow the insulating/cooling oil to naturally convect and dissipate heat.
Man, I give you tons of credit for going in that tunnel alone! That train was a mega cool find. My son is a huge train buff, and I can’t wait to show him this…great stuff as always!
When he said “I’ve only heard stories about this but didn’t believe it existed” I assumed he was talking about the train tunnel itself. I was NOT prepared for a whole LOCOMOTIVE????? To just be buried underground behind and metal door.
The second door you found when you went into that conveyer tunnel is a mine train/locomotive. it had a "back hoe" loader mounted on the side of it and it was mean for loading the main train that hauled the raw ore out of the mine. plus a liquid cooled generator you found on the other side of the train hanger doors. when they finished and closed the mine, removing the equipment is far too expensive to do unless they had another mine to take it too, so they locked up the loader locomotive with a few of the decent cars that remained in good condition in case they ever found another ore bearing deposit in the region. which is likely who hired the exploration company that you found at the lower plateau. Once another decent deposit is found the company will go back into that mine and remove those locomotives and put them to use in the next mine. if they don't find anything in the region, then they will write off the equipment and simply leave it in the mine to rot for ever. it's how the big corporations do things. I knew a guy who was a middle man for those big corporations that found equipment for them to buy and made the exchange possible and he made more money than kings and emperors and retired a multi-millionaire at the age of 36! moved to Bahamas and also had a villa in the French Riviera as well as more Women and Super Cars than you could shake a stick at! Haven't heard anything of him since he left Canada for warmer climes, the lucky duck, but luck had nothing to do with his fortunes, he was a very smart business man, hence his retirement at 36! After watching more of your video, that train is already a write-off at more than 33,000 hours!!! SO it will sit in there fore ever more.
Man you have steel ones! Going into a shaft without an air test.......I have worked in mining a number of years ago, open pit, conventional cut and fill as well as ramp. That is some old stuff. The broken glass unit on the transformer was most likely for Moisture Management. Great tour and love the wheels, both electric and diesel!
When you turned the cam and said “locomotive” my jaw DROPPED. How do you even comprehend that scale in such a dark, cramped space? Absolutely stunning. Cheers.
Now how cool was that, I’ve heard of finding watches, cameras and even cars but a whole train? This is why we watch these videos, you are living our dreams of exploring, many of us don’t have the time or resources to do something like this but you bring our dreams to our homes. Can’t say thank you enough for your journeys and keep up the great work!
What an awesome adventure, I am ever so grateful. At 81 years old I'd have never seen this with out you. Thanks Dustin for what you do to bring this amazing footage to us. I love everything Trains, Happy trails. P.
Dustin, you totally rock, man! This old man just LOVES the story telling, history, videography that you do! You are truly inspiring young fellow. Well done!
I was up there in 1987 working in mineral exploration for the summer. We drove down the power tunnel and got 90% of the way through until blocked by ice like you were. Some of us walked the last bit but the driver had to back up all the way down the tunnel. It seems that end of the tunnel always has ice in it.
I kept thinking...."he must of got out alive...I'm watching the video" ...I'm not an 'underground guy'......freaks me out...I'm glad you're the guy that got this incredible footage.
What a day of adventures- riding your bike in a tunnel that's filled with ice at the end, going underground and finding a train (bet those folks who put it there thought they would be the last to see that train. Nope, not when Dustin is hunting up "lost treasures") and running into two grizzly bears on the way back to the Adventure Rig. What an exciting day.
I know a guy who drove that train. They ran a locomotive and the front, and at the end of the train. The train shuttled cars back and forth. They had a driver in both units, one for forward operation and one for reverse operation. They communicated with signal bells and the signals were all recorded in the office. The guy I know is colour blind and could only tell what colour the rail lights were by seeing if the bottom or top light was on. He ran it for years and no one knew. He also told me that one trip the other operator fell asleep and plowed into the wood barrier at the end of the rail line. Just for good measure the guy ran the bell for stop, because it was all recorded. Cool that you found it. I knew it was seal in the tunnel but didn’t know there was access to it.
I worked on the power lines to the Bruce jack mine in 2015 and 2016 That big was 100% where our camp was awesome valley. We did the same thing hiking into all the old tunnels and around the mine on our days off. Wild beautiful country up there
I’m gonna try and line this up for sure. Have you explored much in that area? I finally have starlink, so I’m beginning to get to watch some other creators content, and you have been recommended possibly the most. Lots of folks enjoying what you do. 🤘🏻
@Destination_Adventure thanks! I haven't seen much out past Hyder, just bushwacked an old mining road near Clements Lake to climb the Cambria Icefield. I heard your interview on the radio for the meetup in Williams Lake, I almost made it to say hi, haha. Totally admire all the cool stuff you're finding out west 👍👍
My wife and I were there earlier this month. We stopped at that tunnel and had a gander inside but it was a big hell no to venturing in there. Salmon Glacier, holy what a majestic sight, the mozzies were brutal though.
Geez Dustin lolol you are a straight up savage lol....my husband going" naw...he won't go in that tunnel " me " uh yeah he will. Its Dustin Porter " lolol Hey...we are so happy to have found you. Whst great adventures! We are playing catch-up but love it all. Thankyou so much! Happy adventures! Bill and Julia ❤
Interesting adventure thanks for showing us and taking me along. Enjoyed the show very much cause old machinery is right down my alley. Not working with it but looking at it. lol. Going into the shafts and mines just beware of methane gas. Love wildlife but the bears are closer than my liking. God Bless, NW ga. USA
I found myself holding my breath while you were looking at the train!! Super cool, im very claustrophobic and could never dream of this. Thank you again for sharing!!
Nice, going down the hole was one thing, taking your ebike on the side of shale cliff is next level scary. The look on your face when the glacier fell i was what the hell is coming at him😂. ❤
Awesome Dustin!! I've discovered and explored a bunch of old rail culverts/ tunnels......but I've NEVER EVER EVER found anything like an actual engine and cars in any of them!! Total electric. No diesel fumes in tunnels!! Awesome awesomeness!!!! Thanks for another adventure!
Heck of an adventure!!! Looks like a lot of fun. Those Griz's had a bit of pucker factor. Def needed more light, maybe next time. Need to slow your movements down a bit too, a bit herky jerky. Still, awesome adventure!! Thanks for taking us along.
Wowzer, pretty cool exploring. When u were in the cave with the train, I kept expecting sum kind of red glowing eyed creature to pop it's head out from hiding and start shrieking and screaming at u and chase you down. Lol Pretty fun and cool, Dustin.
Wow! What a great discovery! A whole train and the wagons. You have guts! I wouldn’t go in. Not because it’s dark but it was kind of narrow! Keep following you! I like your plan no plan! We do the same with our old westfalia! Thanks for the stories!

My heart is still racing from that tunnel adventure. You just kept going further and further.....I kept thinking....ok..turn back....its ok...lol..we've seen enough. All I could think about was your headlamp malfunctioning, and then what??....Then I thought....what if he loses his way back. Course, there wouldn't be a video if those things happened. But still that's what I was thinking! 😆 Funny thing though....I wasn't worried about the bears. I knew you were bear smart. Lol. But Dustin, as always...you put together another awesome video. Thank you for all your hard work that you put into these. I can't imagine the time it takes to edit all of the footage. I believe I can speak for everyone here.....we appreciate you!
Good Am Dustin! Very much enjoyed this adventure with my morning cup of coffee! I bet it was some chilly in that tunnel! Was this part of the old Granduc Mine?
What I enjoy so much about this channel is you include the history of the locations. Thanks and keep up the great abandoned content! Cheers from Tn USA.
Dustin, I absolutely love the outdoor scenery, however I'm really not a fan of underground spaces after being subjected to a collapse in a smallish tunnel. My heart pounded the whole time you were in the dark. Your adventuring has been fun and i'm looking forward to so many more. Happy trails and safe travels to you

That was amazing. I doubt I’d have gone that far with just a headlamp, must be a really good one. Great video as always and inspires me (and others I’m sure) to get out and explore our local wilderness. Thanks again for taking us along.

Dustin…. the look on your face, we knew that something Glacial had happened :-) Absolutely magnificent that you are witnessing with your own eyes, the very end of the Ice-Age melt! And you are bringing it to us! I’m surprised that you haven’t found a Woolly Mammoth Tusk. …… that will be next, Ay! Hihi
Enjoyed, Yes. And the low light was expected. Have to say when you were in the engine it made me think, that was someone's "day job". Thanks for the share
….and you handled that Bear & Cub sighting VERY well !!!! Ooohhhh good job. I was thinking, if need be ….. I hope your bike can go 40 mph out of there! heh heh !
Hi Dustin, Nice video! That's the first glimpse I've seen of the Mitsubishi locomotives since my last shift in 1975. They were used to haul everything from ore to men. We called them "Mittsies"
This is so amazing! I am so grateful for these videos! I’ve been away from UA-cam for a couple years. Then, a few days ago I started thinking of you. I had to think long & hard to remember how to find your channel. Then, “destination adventure“ came to my mind. I looked it up. I watched all your videos on your rebuild of your new rig. in one sitting. I need to find out about that Patron part. I owe you a lot of money! Look at all the trips you’ve saved me!! I’m so glad I’ve found you again! Love from Fort Worth, Texas. ❤️
That grey equipment with lots of tubes is probably an electrical transformer. The glass part is to show the oil level as they are oil cooled. (I think). Another great video thanks. Watching from the UK and envy your travelling to places like this.
Thats scary as heck. Your brave man. With the amount of water seepage at the beginning of the tunnel you'd never catch me going down there, looks like a death wish to me. No thanks. But thank you for being brave for all of us. So we can see some of our old canadian heritage.
Fantastic video, Dustin. I did a quick calculation of the equivalent mileage on that train from the hour meter. It works out to about 3.3 million miles if my memory still works properly. lol. That's a few!
Just a random comment, me and my fiancee go out quite a lot walking and one of the walks we found had a saying, on the sign and its just like yours. Love your words at end of every film clip and then to see this on a board not far from home, amazing.
Oh Dustin! I’m finally able to watch this vid and I catch myself experiencing claustrophobia, taking deep breaths, and saying “no, don’t go in there!!” but I was as curious as you, and glad you showed it to us. I was amazed at the great condition it’s in. And I couldn’t wait for you to get the hell out of that tunnel! Beautiful scenery again, I love those glaciers. Looking forward to the next one…
Crazy discovery is an understatement!! Wow!! I would not have made it past the first 10 feet at the beginning and I would have missed that awesome train! I'm anxious to learn what the train was for. Were they mining, and if so, what for? Were they just making a shorter passage? Why did they leave it in the tunnel? Such an intriguing video - thanks Dustin!
Best guess for leaving it? It was probably on orphan track. Unconnected to any other rail line, and it would cost money to disassemble it and pack it out. It happens to a lot of equipment like trains and tunnel boring machines.

* Destination Detroit Adventure for us today ... Dream Cruise Saturday ! You be careful in those tunnels Dustin 😮 !

U got some seriously big ones. But that was incredibly cool. Thank you
Good Am Dustin! Very much enjoyed this adventure with my morning cup of coffee! I bet it was some chilly in that tunnel! Was this part of the old Granduc Mine?

My claustrophobia kicked in as well, but I had to watch!
That was very interesting, thanks for showing it to us.
Another Awesome Saturday Morning tv 😊 Thanks Dustin
This video was amazing,,greetings from Athens Greece
That was amazing. I doubt I’d have gone that far with just a headlamp, must be a really good one. Great video as always and inspires me (and others I’m sure) to get out and explore our local wilderness. Thanks again for taking us along.
Another banger Dustin! ❤wowwww - you make my weeks worth it with all your videos❤
What a find. Good sniffing around. Whats behind the next door? Cant wait for your next excellent adventure.
Thanks
Thank you for another amazing video 😊
Amazing! The white grizz was sure different! Glad they decided to let you pass.
Granduc was legendary, and being Hyderized (Everclear grain alcohol) in Hyder, Alaska was part of the ritual en route from Stewart, BC.

…… that will be next, Ay! Hihi
Wow what a find, glad you got your feet wet to be able to find the train.
I love discovering and investigating, exploring tunnels, caves, and such. Thank you, once again, Dustin, for a fantastic video. I just loved.
Enjoyed, Yes. And the low light was expected. Have to say when you were in the engine it made me think, that was someone's "day job".
Thanks for the share
I think about that in many of these locations. People working every day there, not even thinking twice.
This is the type of vacation that I need.
Thank you so much what an experience , I think this is one of the best videos I've seen of yours, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND BSAFE
….and you handled that Bear & Cub sighting VERY well !!!! Ooohhhh good job. I was thinking, if need be ….. I hope your bike can go 40 mph out of there! heh heh !

I would have loved to see this train in action.
Great episode Dustin, what a find.
I was up at that mine back in the early 80s as a visitor, your video makes me want to get back up there again
You are beyond brave! Once again, very interesting vid. And the bonus double rainbow topped it off, sweet.
Some things deserve to be watched on a 46 inch plasma television. 👍
Great video Dustin ..stay safe.
NEAT VIDEO YOU ARE CERTAINLY BRAVE GOING IN THOSE PLACES ! TAKE CARE AND BE CAREFUL
A cup of coffee and the beautiful nature surrounding you would just be amazing.
Interesting tunnel,so much equipment left behind.
This was pretty dope to watch...I kept worrying your flashlight batteries would die. Hahaha.
I watch to many scary videos😢
That grey equipment with lots of tubes is probably an electrical transformer. The glass part is to show the oil level as they are oil cooled. (I think). Another great video thanks. Watching from the UK and envy your travelling to places like this.
Was about to comment about the lighting until you mentioned it at the end. Looking forward to a return trip.
Your adventurous videos are so interesting and inspiring! Thank you!
What a great find indeed
Thats scary as heck. Your brave man. With the amount of water seepage at the beginning of the tunnel you'd never catch me going down there, looks like a death wish to me. No thanks. But thank you for being brave for all of us. So we can see some of our old canadian heritage.
❤ my Saturday morning chai tea and watching the next Destination Adventure! Always entertaining 👍
I can’t believe the lights still work with a switch!!amazing awesome engineering!!
You’re one brave dude Dustin; thanks again for another ‘Epic’ Vlog 🎉❤🎉
Fantastic video, Dustin. I did a quick calculation of the equivalent mileage on that train from the hour meter. It works out to about 3.3 million miles if my memory still works properly. lol. That's a few!
That was amazing I think I could spend days in there exploring seeing it all wow!!!! Thx 4 bringing use all with u
Just a random comment, me and my fiancee go out quite a lot walking and one of the walks we found had a saying, on the sign and its just like yours. Love your words at end of every film clip and then to see this on a board not far from home, amazing.
Perfect way to start my day, as always your the best bro, be safe, watch them grizzies lol
Nice Find!!! Tunnels and Trains!!! Great episode!!
@@dposcuro Thank you for the reply. It boggles my mind leaving it but your reply makes sense as to the cost to remove it.
Those bears😮frightening! You handle that so well...glad they didn't fuss with you.
