I love the slower tempo and her melancholy delivery, so unusual for Sissel. This nis by far the most beautiful rendition of this aria that I have heard. I cannot believe some of the comments - the opera snobs are back in full force. All that crap about microphones. One of the reasons that Sissel's voice is so wonderful is that she always uses a microphone so that she can sing at a NORMAL level, which captures the sweetness and richness of that wonderful voice. Opera singers can sing at a NORMAL level. And Sissel's voice is more akin to that of a boy soprano, very little variation in tone, boring to listen to. This is definitely not what Puccini would have had in mind when he composed the opera from which this aria came. She's like Hayley Westernra - once you've heard them sing one sog, you've heard them all and they all sound the same..
I had the great fortune of hearing Cheryl Studer sing this at a recital at the University of Tennessee in the late 1970’s. Her performance was beyond words, and it changed me. This performance recreates that same sense of transcendence. I love it.
@@alanbishop7852 The aria comes from Gianni Schicchi which was premiered at the New York Met Opera house in 1918. The role of Lauretta was sung by Florence Easton. who was an opera singer. Modern recording techniques were not available then, so she would have had to have been able to fill the opera house with her voice - and only trained opera singers can do that. Puccini was Italian, so would have expected all the roles in his operas to be performed by singers trained in the bel canto tradition.
The most beautifully sung version of this aria I’ve ever heard and done so effortlessly! No belting of the high note, but a true pleading piece, at a pace a young woman might use as she thoughtfully approaches her beloved father.

I I speak Portuguese, Spanish and the words (Italian) are close enough to bring a greater appreciation of her abilities, Her voice awaken the spirit and divine nature of our souls planted there when we left our pre-mortal existence.
If ever an aria could bring tears to my eyes, it is this one... and I personally love the slowness - I think that it adds emotion and shows her skill and power through her vocal control.
I remember watching the movie TITANIC as most people of the 90s' generation has. I was this stunned 8 year old when this movie came out, my eyes glued to the TV as the INTRO music (of the movie) and the scene of the bustling harbor came onto the screen. Back then, I didn't know it was Sissel who sang the into as well as other parts for TITANIC. The 'internet' was a thing of the future then. But, I remember her angelic sound that will haunt me till the day I die. No matter how old I get or whichever worries I carry with me in life, Sissel's voice is like a balm for the soul. Words can't begin to express how Beautiful, how clear and refined this amazing Soprano's voice is. May she always finds joy in music.
PaulaBill1, I agree with you. Kiri's recordings and performances were better, because not so slow. This (above) is sung too slowly, as if the singer doesn't understand the story and the lyrics. When Kiri has sung it, she has sung it with the passion and urgency with which a young woman WOULD feel it and sing it, she wants the right to love her chosen man! Kiri's is equally beautiful but more appropriately phrased. This is TOO SLOW.
Kiri Ta Kanawa has a fuller sound that sweeps through the room. I couldn't find where Sissel has any formal training. They aren't comparable in that way. I was taught how to use my whole body to sing and how to bring the sound to the front my mouth or back into the throat, as appropriate. This woman had choir training. Period. This is an amazing sound for someone who hasn't had years of vocal training. She probably has an arranger and a coach, but it's not the same as years of exhaustive training and practice when you are younger. For the educational background she has, this is a phenomenal sound.
It's been a year since I made my last comment, and my opinion hasn't changed. The slowness enables the longest, most poignant notes, which she holds to their completion. Exquisite, transcendent, heavenly.
she's absolutely the most beautiful singer I've heard in my lifetime (and I'm 80yo). She makes me cry and I'm far from the only one. I first heard her years ago when she sang Lennon's "Imagine" in a small church.
