I definitely agree, it was a really really hard decision to talk about this or how music is used in the world. For example Yuuri sings a tune in ep 9 I think, (the one where they're on the train) then the music comes in and repeats the same line that she just sang. It's a really small touch but something that most studios won't go that extra mile to do. I'm definitely open to coming back to this series though and almost named this Pt 1 because I do intend to come back to it :)

That Music Nerd Shabu I love how they try to recreate their conception of music with drops sounds, Chito says something like "it's what people called "music" i guess", and this was pretty clever because they really have no musical education, i think it says a lot about the definition of music, people who are used to music (mostly tonal music) would hardly think that these random drops sounds create music.
Oh absolutely, it's such an simple idea but it's really interesting because even when we just compare western conceptions of music or high art music (not as much anymore, as modern and post-modern music has gotten very bold over the past hundred years) to arabic music with microtonality people don't fully get it. Music is such a broad concept and is such an interesting form of art, ah I love it!

That Music Nerd Shabu And that's why i love modern and contemporary music, it is way more opened to other musical cultures than any other period, for example Messiaen and his deep interest for indian music or Johnston and Ferneyhough and their use of micro intervals !
To me this is one of the best openings, first episodes, of a show that I have watched. It sets the tone of the whole series. There is no "watch 3 episodes" or "Its worth it for the ending" kind of deals, you either like what the this episode has shown or you don't. A great manga masterfully adapted
Totally agree, an absolutely beautiful way to open up the show and convey what it's about. Still blows my mind they were able to convey so much in so little time :)
I find that the first episode is so well directed to a point where it can fully stand on its own, completely separate from rest of the season, only real criticism from me being the subpar CGI at some parts, but what can you do. Can't wait for your next GTL/SSR project, as for me personally everything from sound design and soundtrack to OP and ED1/2 felt like master craft.
Ah yeah, as a one-shot I think it could stand on its own well too. For the next video my plan is to talk about how they use music as a part of the world and for character portrayal. Because of the fact that music is written away from picture for anime it's a lot less common than you'd think you have a scene like the one where yuuri sings a little tune then it's echoed in the music. Also the rain scene, obviously, but yeah I think it's an interesting topic that I want to revisit after a few more videos :)
Would be fond of seeing more Girls' Last Tour discussion, anime like this just didn't get enough credit in mainstream market. It has created some of the most comforting yet depressing atmosphere toward the world. I especially love the song from the old radio(which is sang by those white creatures). It still gives me a tremendous sorrow feeling which I can't explain.
Ah yeah! There's honestly a lot from GLT that would be a lot of fun to talk about. I'd also love to talk about the rain scene and how they use diegetic sounds there. If I'm remembering correctly the girls sing along with the song from the radio right? That has really cool implications into the process the composer and sound staff would have gone through. Since for shows there's a certain order that this would imply they changed. Thanks for watching and talking :) sorry I'm just catching up on everything now
Honestly I had times where I wasn't the most interested in the show but the sound design and the way the music interacts with the world is pretty damn well done. I'm glad you liked the video, thanks for watching man! :)
I loved this show so I'm really happy you covered it. The music in it is one of the most beautiful scores in combination with the world its contrasted against and I feel like that didn't get enough love in the anime community because while there a plenty of youtubers who will talk about themes, meaning, and visuals, I feel like scores, audio direction, mixing, and the like tend to fall by the wayside unless a scene in a show heavily puts the song front and center. So I'm glad, as the only anime youtuber who focuses on those things really, you covered the show and I love to see more from you on it.
I did almost lose interest in the show, it could be really slow at times, but then the episode with the song the sound of rain played and after that I fell into the shows rhythm and every episode after that was a treat as the themes got touched on more and more.
Yeah I had the same thought! There are too many shows where the sound goes under appreciated. I want to come back to this series for sure, as I said there are tons of things I'd love to talk about :) glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!
Whoa, I didn't even realize that there's a kind of sonic chiaroscuro to go along with the visual chiaroscuro. Great analysis! This show has some of my favorite music--the mushroom song, in particular, is incredibly, hauntingly beautiful and has some really interesting harmony.
It has some really great tracks, I liked how production seemed to be done in such a way that they could use diegetic sounds or actually have the characters hum parts of the score
The editing work really paid off, nice work!! :) Just wanted to let you know-- when you discuss EQ, recording techniques, etc., I really appreciate learning a bit about that kind of stuff. It's helped me appreciate the thought that goes into my favorite music, and what sets apart the very best scores. So thanks for making your content educational as well as fun to watch!
Ah thank you Bruce! I always love reading your comments, they make my day :) I'm really glad I could help you appreciate the sound design and composition more that makes me really happy. As for the editing, thanks, I'm still trying to get better at it, so hopefully it just keeps improving. Seriously, thank you, comments like these are really awesome for me and I really appreciate it. You're great, and I hope you have a great day!
Great video on girls last tour discussing the amazing music/sound & doing a breakdown. I'm no music expert myself, but it was nice to learn something new from your analysis. This show honestly did not get enough attention which is disheartening to me. I am hoping Sentai gets on dubbing this show ASAP (praying it will be good if not sub is fine). The show also did a great job in discussing philosophy & creating atmosphere. You earned a new subscriber. I am curious if you will cover other anime & their soundtracks (Maybe Re:Creators, Re:Zero etc.)
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I will be covering other shows (currently just have a ton of work, got a few films and tv shows out of nowhere so I've just been super busy with work). Re:Zero has been requested before so it's definitely on my list of things to cover and I have a video idea for it already. Re:Creators is on the list too, just need to think of exactly how I want to say what I want to say hahaha. Thanks for stopping by I'm glad you enjoyed :)
Great video, Girls last tour was one of my favorite anime from last year and much of it is due to its great atmosphere. The sounds, visuals, and writing combines to make a great contrast between the post-apocalyptic setting the the somehow comfy story. Though post-apocalypse slice of life has been done before I think Girls last tour's great sound makes it rise above the rest. There's so much more to this show's music, and I would love to see you cover more of the great music and moments from this show.
Ah absolutely, the feedback has been a huge "Do more GLT content" so I'll probably do another one soon :) The music is integrated with the world incredibly well. One of the best integrations of score to world I've seen honestly. It aids the storytelling to an incredible degree and has a lot of little touches here and there that just add so much connectivity to the visuals and world overall. Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching :)
I saw on twitter that you might do a video on revue starlight, I've only watched the first episode and found it hard to get into like most Ikuhara-y anime. Maybe you'll help me get into it. I am also wondering if you're watching Harukana Receive this season, I think rasmus faber has done a great job of creating a good summer atmosphere with his jazzy and latin-y soundtrack for that anime.
Ah I'm so sorry youtube has gotten really bad about telling me when comments are posted. I've honestly been absolutely loving Revue Starlight, the atmosphere is great and it's peak Fujisawa when it comes to composition. Much more daring than some of his other works, I'm loving it. As for Harukana Receive I only watched the first episode and I don't think that was quite enough for me to get an accurate feel for the score. If you'd like me to look into it some more let me know and I will gladly look into it :)
@@ThatMusicNerdShabu Naw, I'm sure you've got enough on your plate, I'd be much happier if you could make a revue starlight video or another GLT video or just whatever you want to make, keep up the good work.
Alright sounds good! A Revue Starlight one is in the works, just have to wait for it to end so I can get the full ost ordered and everything. And GLT I have another video idea that I just need to get started on when I get back from Japan :)
Oh yeah, that is an incredibly powerful moment. 100% agree, the sound direction is freaking great, I plan on coming back to this series for sure because there are so many moments like that
I want to preface this comment by saying that you, the creator, understands your video better than anyone, especially in hindsight. So read on with utmost cynicism! Frist off, liked the sound analysis along with your music analysis. You know your shit. So I was surprised by your edits in the first part of the video cycling through images (didn't expect a music nerd to edit :p) but a few of them were distracting and added little to your script, example being far cry primal. I fell into the trap of putting in way too much in my videos so I'm going for a middle ground and trying to use images more meaningfully from now on. I liked the Bill joke towards the middle of your vid, got a smile out of me and I had more than enough time to process it alongside your script. Something I had been thinking since your last video is diagrams and musical instruments. I have no idea what legato strings are (I just like analysis videos I know jack shit about music). Ok after looking up what they are it's fine I got the point regardless and not worth dumbing down your script, the music lingo is probably always gonna go over my head. But in your shirobako video especially I felt like you were rapid firing instrument names and how they worked together, and I could tell you had a great point but I had no visual representation. Maybe if you could work an image of the instrument into your graphics without it being intrusive. Diagrams. I don't have an example for you but a diagram makes information so much easier to parse (most people are visual learners). Despite how dumb I sound I do learn a lot from your videos about how sound and music make a scene. I'm more of a story and characters guy but music is so important to everything its not even funny. All this I suggested requires a ton more work on your part, and you got your work cut out for you being a composer. tbh when I found your channel it was really cool since your specializing in music analysis and bringing real experience to the plate, so all this might be me projecting... This is my hobby. Love your content cheers!
Thank you for the constructive criticism I really appreciate it! I had a harder time with the editing on this one because I didn't want to use unrelated scenes too much but didn't know how to keep things visually engaging. The point about Legato, Pizzicato, and so on is great though. I often forget the fact that these could be expounded on more, as I already try to put things in a way anyone can understand, but there are still terms and such that I forget to explain (because I forget it isn't something people necessarily know). I've had a hard time with diagrams and visuals, especially in this vid because music as an abstract concept can make it difficult to put visually but I'll definitely keep working at it so that visuals are more additive than they are subtractive. Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video :)
Never knew sound design could impact world-building to this extent, really fascinating. On another note, would a Fairy Tail video be a possibility? Say what you will about the anime itself, but it's OST is phenomenal (to me), and does what it's meant to in a traditional, yet very effective way.
Yeah! Sound design is often grossly overlooked, people kind of forget that people have to make the sounds and mix and master everything to get it how it sounds. They're artists in their own right too :) And I haven't watched much Fairy Tail to be honest with you but I can definitely add it to the list to look into! Any particular tracks you like personally to start with?
Not him but I've saved a few tracks of fairy tail that I've personally enjoyed that will give you a decent idea of what the fairy tail track is like. It's always come across to me as a kind of Gaelic rock if that makes any sense but I'm no expert on genres. I'd start with the main theme. There's also Dragon Force, and Erza theme. On the slower end you have Main theme slow version, and the piano version, both well done imo. Then there's Shukumei another slower piece. These may not be the best tracks but they're the ones I've personally saved.
Never to late to enjoy some good sound design and music hahaha. I'm glad you found the channel too, thanks for giving it a try and thank you for the kind words :)
I've watch this before up to ep4 then put in on hold...never got time to go back to it. BTW have you watch anime called 'Another'. It can be clasified as horror themed anime. The story Itself is not scary however i find that the music really bring out the tension & setting up a scary atmosphere.
I haven't watched "Another" I will check it out for sure :) I don't think I've really covered much suspenseful music so that might be a good change of pace
I did! I believe I answered fully in the other comment but that was almost the focus of this video haha. I will definitely come back and talk about that scene in particular :)
Well thank you! Don't worry I will remember you when I ascend to godhood haha. Nahhhh, but thank you for the kind words and for checking out the channel!
Shabu, That Music Nerd It was a real end, but see chito burn her books after finding a library, the kettenkrad breaking down, and yuu just tossing her rifle away really just hurt.
Ummm honestly I went through college for composition and took many courses on sound design. On top of that I have multiple years of professional composition and sound design experience, it takes a while but I can give you some books or resources that are a good place to start if you want? There's always more to learn, which is really exciting but a lot of it is just learning through experience. Getting in situations you haven't been in before and all that. It would be kinda hard to pin down the exact amount of time tbh but I've been doing it for a long time now :) Thanks for watching!
That's actually one of if not my favorite anime, so a video is definitely in the works but I want to make sure I get the topic right and that I handle it as well as I can!
That's a great idea! I've thought about that aspect of Your Lie in April a lot honestly. I love hearing how different people play the same piece it's absolutely fascinating. Especially in recitals vs concerts vs practice vs personal play, the differences even in play even for the same performer can vary so greatly. It's amazing to see how different people have different tendencies or how they insert themselves into the music they're playing. I will be adding that to the list of videos to make for sure :)
Hey :) honestly more often than not I'll be doing score analysis, so I try to stick to using the score of what I'm critiquing or analyzing. Other instances I can think of would probably be like a little composition tips or a look at commercial composing video where I'd probably just be showing what I do/how I compose or just some of the stuff I've worked on. I really appreciate the offer though and don't want to really turn it down entirely, I just don't know if the need would really arise honestly. Out of curiosity, I'm guessing you're associated with the other ContiMusic channels? Thanks for watching and the words of encouragement :) Have a great day!
I definitely had a good time with it. The music and sound design play a big role throughout so that's always fun. I will say I could see how people could lose interest in it over time but it's an incredibly unique experience that I'd say people who are interested should give it a shot! Also if you're into music there's a lot of things that are done very interestingly in regards to the score and sound design
Ah honestly Shabu has been my online tag for about 8 or 9 years or something but wanted a music related name for the youtube channel. So I made That Music Nerd, but I realized that was a little to refer to me as haha so if someone was in the comments I figured just calling me Shabu would be easier and would set the channel name apart/give it a little extra flavor.
That Music Nerd Shabu I thought that’s a musical term. Haha. Oh by the way, just to inform you, Kevin Penkin will compose the music of ‘Rising of Shield Hero’ next January.
Ah nah it's actually a way you cook food haha "Shabu Shabu" means swish swish and you cook food in really hot boiing water by swishing it around. And yeah! I saw that one Twitter! The dude is doing super well for himself in the industry which is super exciting and encouraging. I'm always interested in seeing anything Penkin has a hand in and this will be no different :) With him and Fujisawa doing so well the anime scoring scene is being pushed even further and I love the direction it's heading in!
i love the whole show, but i feel like you need to talk about the rain episode
I definitely agree, it was a really really hard decision to talk about this or how music is used in the world. For example Yuuri sings a tune in ep 9 I think, (the one where they're on the train) then the music comes in and repeats the same line that she just sang.
That Music Nerd Shabu Absolutely ! :-)
That Music Nerd Shabu And that's why i love modern and contemporary music, it is way more opened to other musical cultures than any other period, for example Messiaen and his deep interest for indian music or Johnston and Ferneyhough and their use of micro intervals !

Zetsubou, Zetsubou, Zetsu bOOOUUU. Glad to finally see this video, it was very pleasant and of course I love GLT.
Zetsubou sung by Yuuri is a 10/10, perfect, peak music right there. Glad you liked it my dude :)

Ah nice, I remember recommended this anime to you in Land of Lustrous video, and you delivered it! Good job and keep going.
Yeah! Thank you so much for recommending it I had a great time with it! Glad you liked the video :)
The videos keep getting better
Thank you! I'm glad that the effort is paying off! Thanks for watching :)
I didn’t see the video...
WHERE I CAN WATCH THE ANIME??! 😭
Amazon prime, in the stats at least
I've watch this before up to ep4 then put in on hold...never got time to go back to it.
BTW have you watch anime called 'Another'. It can be clasified as horror themed anime. The story Itself is not scary however i find that the music really bring out the tension & setting up a scary atmosphere.
I haven't watched "Another" I will check it out for sure :) I don't think I've really covered much suspenseful music so that might be a good change of pace
did you get to the part with the rain making music? ITS AMAZING
I did! I believe I answered fully in the other comment but that was almost the focus of this video haha. I will definitely come back and talk about that scene in particular :)
Great video :)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I watched this anime deaf.
You're gonna go big dude. Please remember me when you go to the heavenly realm like jesus did.
Well thank you! Don't worry I will remember you when I ascend to godhood haha. Nahhhh, but thank you for the kind words and for checking out the channel!
Wait til you finish the manga. There’s 2 manga books that follow it to the true end...it gives closure
Oh I have, I personally love the ending. I feel it's very true to the whole experience :)
Shabu, That Music Nerd
It was a real end, but see chito burn her books after finding a library, the kettenkrad breaking down, and yuu just tossing her rifle away really just hurt.
@@ColonizerChan Oh yeah definitely, getting to the top and no one is there :(
Shabu, That Music Nerd
>there is nothing here
But living sure has been great.
God damn, you know your shit. How long did it take to learn about sound design?
Ummm honestly I went through college for composition and took many courses on sound design. On top of that I have multiple years of professional composition and sound design experience, it takes a while but I can give you some books or resources that are a good place to start if you want?
There's always more to learn, which is really exciting but a lot of it is just learning through experience. Getting in situations you haven't been in before and all that. It would be kinda hard to pin down the exact amount of time tbh but I've been doing it for a long time now :)
Thanks for watching!
You should make a video on your lie in April
That's actually one of if not my favorite anime, so a video is definitely in the works but I want to make sure I get the topic right and that I handle it as well as I can!
That Music Nerd Shabu maybe you should make a video on performances and what can make a good a song sound better between different musicians
Quite nice, would you consider using my music for free? Keep up the good work!
I really need to watch this anime sooner.
That Music Nerd Shabu I noticed you changed your channel name. What is ‘shabu’?
I'm always interested in seeing anything Penkin has a hand in and this will be no different :)
With him and Fujisawa doing so well the anime scoring scene is being pushed even further and I love the direction it's heading in!
