Chopping samples is where the magic happens -- MPC 3000 + Yamaha SU700

  • sampled a few short notes off an old CD into the yamaha su700 and then chopped and sequenced them in the akai mpc 3000. shaping, trimming and chopping samples is a meditative practice and where the magic of the art really happens. there's no auto-chop on the 3000 or the yamaha, as you must manually pick and choose which segments you want, which takes longer, but is more fun in my opinion. simple lo-fi boom-bap beat here, but this can be applied to any genre.

      @@eddieleonard6925 this is actually why I moved back to MPC's from DAW's. I actually like the more restrictive workflow, sometimes the DAW just feels like options paralysis. Being able to fly around the MPC is so much more rewarding to me.

    recently sold my S2400 to get back my MPC 1000 cuz of this channel. seeing how comfortable you are on the 3K is/was mad inspiring n convinced me to go back to actually making music instead of experimenting w/ something that mostly just looked cool 🤣
    also that beat is RAW man

      Was Akai trying to go back to that design. I've been seeing a lot of people going back to old school MPC's. Making loops and songs seemed simpler.

      Old school MPC's have a simplicity that works well with hip-hop/house, etc. Design wise, I think folks are always nostalgic and pull inspiration from decades past.

      I'm glad this inspires. I had an s2400 for a while, too. Very cool machine with a great future ahead of it, but the timing wasn't as tight as older MPCs. Maybe I had early firmware, but I didn't like the occasional glitches. But I miss the way it lets you slice samples per pad, so you save sample space. I miss a lot of things about that machine, actually. But yea..machines like the 1000 are workhorses.

    I'm enjoying how your process is all hands-on. As you know, I have a hybrid set up, so the overall execution is much more slow cooked. Your application is palpable, if that makes sense. We can feel the dust and history from your studio. Digging the original horns and love the camera angles.

    • @eddieleonard6925
      @eddieleonard6925  7 місяців тому +1

      Even with hybrid, that hands on is closer to how we came up. I remember how you used to obsess over crossfaders and how tight or loose they were. These small details are everything.

    I like every version of that (unnamed, sampled) song I've ever heard. Super pretty.
    Your process and videos are super inspiring...
    TBE, your last video inspired me to get pretty 'scientific' about sampling from youtube to cassette. (i.e. my favorite tape, currently, for that is Maxell UD XLI's from the late 70's)

    • @eddieleonard6925
      @eddieleonard6925  8 місяців тому +1

      Agreed. It's hard to hear this song and not want to slice it up and explore it's tones. Lovely melodies. I'm glad that inspired. I used regular TDK's on my last experiment but they imparted a sound that served that EP well. Cassette tapes are "low quality" but honestly, I think they sound pretty damn good. Sampling off CDs has been fun, too, mostly because I get them for about 50c each and it exposes me to more music. Happy music making!

      @@eddieleonard6925 I've really been opened up to cassettes recently. (i.e. a Metal (type IV) tape on a decent deck (capable of 20hz-20khz response) will be +indistinguishable+ from CD.)
      And if you really push signal into certain tapes (i.e. a TDK-AR, which has high SOL) you can really add substantial harmonics (that are not just distortion or clipping).
      It's a +whole world+ I wasn't aware of b/c, like most, I always owned crappy tapes and players.
      Don't sleep on the saturation and compression possibilities!
      Continued blessings and happiness to you, sir!

  • @MrLegitFlip

    Does the Yamaha su700 allow live effects if I pass an Audio signal thru it? Or do you have to hit sample in order for effects to apply to signal?

    • @eddieleonard6925
      @eddieleonard6925  8 місяців тому

      It only allows certain effects live. Most of the ones I use (like pitch and LFO) need to be sampled, then replayed. That would siiiick if I could use it as a live effects unit.
