Do I need a 6Gbps SAS expander, or is 3Gbps enough?

3Gbps (gigabit per second) transfers 386 megabytes per second maximum. 6 Gbps transfers 768 megabytes per second.
Bits to bytes are 8th's alike!

I suppose the bandwidth of pci-e 2.0 needs to be part of this as well?

just to confirm, SAS negociates to 600MB/s:
    da7: 600.000MB/s transfersda6 at mps0 bus 0 scbus8 target 10 lun 0
SATA, on the other hand I see mixed results(150 and 300MB/s):
    da9: 150.000MB/s transfers
    pass14: ACS-2 ATA SATA 3.x device
pass14: 150.000MB/s transfers, Command Queueing Enabled
    da8: 300.000MB/s transfers

hello. because it seems to be a confusion on these things
    1. if you are using 12 x SATA(6bps) SSDs(550MB/s read) would a 6gbps backplane be enough? or better to go to 12gbps?
    2. If you are using 6gbps(SATA) drives such as HDD or SSD, does it matter to use a 12gbps backplane, or it will always be limited to 6gbps speed the backplane due to 6gbps drives?
    3. It is obvious that 12gbps SAS drives ideally need a 12gbps backplane, but for those using either 8-12 SATA HDD or 8-12 SATA SSD setups, will we see a dramatic increase in speeds with a 12gbps backplane rather than a 6gbps backplane?

your base 10 instead of base 8. ive got 36 drives on my truenas already and need more... i think im going to be up to well over 50 drives when im done. the problem with multiple cards is im not running a server board. so im limited to two x16 slots (no biforcation) and 2 x1 slots and 1 x4 slot. limits what i can do when running 10gb networking

I just ordered a 3gbps HP expander. Will it support 4tb drives?

So long as your HBA does, yes.

I have an lsi 8 port 12gb card. I'm using 12g 8 tb sas drives. These top out at 3gbs. So splitting them 12gbx2 into 12 x 6gb .... add ina coue pies and some doughnuts... its fine. these do something like 180 mbs (3gbs speed)
If I was using 12gbs SAS SSDs, it would be a different story.

Well, 3gbs HP sas expanders do not exist, HP only has 2 expander modesl in pcie card format, one that is sas6 and one that is sas12, the sas6 one was released with sas3 standard firmware, upgradable to sas6 firmaware. only issue is sata side of things, that the sas6 one is only compatible with sata2 drives(which is unclear to me without testing it if it is capable of sata3 as well, and limited on specsheet as it was only ment to work with p410 card which is sata2 compatible).

How would I update the firmware on my HP 3gbps expander?
