Very informative interview with Father Jonathan. I agree that importance of music(vocal and organ) need to be taught in seminary so that the priest is attuned the importance of appropriate music for the liturgy and mass--a big help to the organist! Also, as a titular organist I agree that the organist and choir sectional leaders, unless parish is very small, should be paid for their talents and time. Gracious of you to offer Maker's Mark to your guests if they so desire to partake. You are a "natural" in front of the camera. Thanks, Patrick.

I couldn't agree more! Having played at Fr. Jon's parish in York (St. Mary's/Immaculate Conception), I often found myself playing whatever I felt like, especially for preludes and postludes. Through Fr. Jon's guidance (as well as from watching many of Patrick's other interviews, especially the one with Evan Brickner) I realized the most important aspect was whether the music added anything of substance to the liturgy. Fr. Jon also recommended different ways of playing certain pieces that many organists blare instead of playing with the appropriate nuance and expression. As a pianist turned organist as a second job, the guidance of a pastor is invaluable in learning and understanding the best way to contribute to the liturgy. And if I never have to play Be Not Afraid or Eagles Wings again, I will not shed one tear! 🤣😂

I want to share that I'm taking training to teach Suzuki organ so that I can teach young children. Please pray for me. I need to find someone who understands how to midii-fy pedal boards so that the children can have home practice organs at a reasonable cost. The teacher trainer is in Sweden and she specifies that lessons should be on a church organ. We are so lucky in Albuquerque New Mexico that we have so many pipe organs!!!

Hopefully soon! I have a few interviewees in mind. I have a message out to a fantastic liturgical organist (from the French cathedral school of playing), and I'm hoping I hear back from him about doing an episode on chant influences in organ improvisation and liturgical playing. We'll see!
