Wow....great version of the Elton John classic. I love the range of songs she does. And that voice!
Get a listen to Marcene ‘dimples’ Harris version! Will blow you away🎶👌🏻✊🏻
No one -- NO ONE -- does it like Ms. Bettye.
Dang! Betty owns this tune.....she puts the soul & flava in it that was missing.
When times seem unbearable, music comes bearing the truth
I didn't know there was a video for this until I read her book, which I finished last night. She is sooooo unapologetically honest, and I appreciate that. Ms. B is one of the most genuine people I have ever met. And her performances blow me away. First time I saw her live performance, the audience was in the palm of her hand. She is right up there with the rest of the classic vocalists we know and love for sure.
A great cover of a great Elton John tune. She puts an even darker approach to this song. An excellent job. WELL DONE !!
This video was shot in The Locker Room in Detroit, MI. This is the bar where Bettye used to go before her resurgence in the new millenium. It was here where she actually lived the lyrics of this song.
Thanks for sharing this tidbit. This interpretation and video always gives me the feels.
First time hearing this--just beautiful in a sad way.
This is most definitely how this song should be sung. She makes it fit her like a glove. The lone piano arrangement is so tasty and this dark tune that speaks for many of us who have lost too many friends over the years is so poignant - as only Bettye could make it reach in and tug at our heartstrings so bad and so good. Thanks, Bettye for throwing your experience and talent into this great tune.
I can't get enough of this song. I'm 43, two of my best friends were murdered over drugs and have lost another 3 or 4 to overdoses and drund driving. I never thought at 43 I would be sittin here ALONE.
She's a master of delivery. so much heart...so much soul.
man, the "i got me memories" line makes you quiver
My mind is screaming no, no no. Yet I still have goosebumps from this rendition of one of my favorite songs.
mwilson70201 very true
If only I could only leave one song like this, I will have done my job.
I love her, I love her , I love her.
Choices, is my favorite of hers, but this is a close second. They don't make singers like her anymore. Love you Bettye
Bettye this is lovely, xxx hope you're doing great. @Bettye Lavette
même sans comprendre toutes les paroles ,cette voix vous prends aux tripes
une grande dame
Brilliant version. Just amazing!
This has come home to me.
Why have I never heard of this woman?caught her on public T.V. recently,(Thank God for Austin City Limits ) gave me goosebumps.
Miss Bettye Lavette...you are the Real Deal....WOW...
Awesome singer! I didn't know that she sang this Elton John song until I read her book.
Wow, my god this is strong stuff. I'm crying.
this songs opening up stuff ive not been able to confront, the screams are inescapabe. Loss is hard and it does leave you bitter and pissed off.
OMG ... Sista you still can touch souls unlike so many others~ Thank you~ God Bless
To me, there was only Aretha and Tina in female rock and soul vocalists at the top of the list, and everyone else was somewhere well below.... Well, surprise, there is (and somehow always was, she's been around forever) Bettye Lavette, right up there. Better late than never.
Goose bumps ❤❤❤❤❤
This right here. This is something special. This made me want to sing. I am starting so late. But I don't care. I want to leave something like this. I have been the young stranger buying the drink, and I am soon becoming the recipient of the drink. This let's me know that if all my friends are in the graveyard. I must somehow continue to survive ....... and flourish. Thank you, Ms. Bettye Lavette. Life long fan.
Bettye, sings this song.....she made it into her own....
@cmjhaywood completely right... she's got a lot of soul. I saw her in concert at the beatles celebration in the hollywood bowl and i really liked her so i look her up to find very few things from her... the first time i saw this video i didnt know it was an elton john cover but the song makes you feel...you know?
great artist... it makes you wonder what some producers are thinking
couldn't say it better!!
Oh man, I know , I know about them friends- muddy hills and filthy alleys-broken dreams and the silent screams in the night- Thank You ma;am for a great song thank you- Semper Fi-
Нет слов.Потрясающе. Бетти Лаветт не просто поет старый хит Элтона Джона. Она, подобно старому солдату из этой песни, проживает нахлынувшие на нее воспоминания...
О...Как она это спела...И перевода не надо...
just a fantastic lady with a fabulous video. i hope this will get some airing around the world !
wow...her rendition of this song is amazing...gives me chills...just now being turned on to this increible woman
another day in the paradise !!!! love this song blues bettye super bettye!!!!!
Oh my god this is my favorite song from her! Thank you so much for posting!
エルトン卿とはまた違ってとても味わい深いですね。
つくづくElton Johnさまは天才でございます。
I actually get u completely. :) Tho' I chose to look at this as not been a cover. But a remake. c: -And note I don't think there is alot of unnecessary stuff in it. c: If anyone flames, it because they get that narcissistic feeling, that anyone not thinking EXACTLY like them. is "actually challenging them, saying they are wrong". Just by not thinking the same. You know, the usual insecurity move.. You articulated ur self respectfully and from YOUR pov.. Any flaming is pointless. :)
Reading Bettye's A WOMEN LIKE ME: near end of it,page227, this vid's mention: wow!
Tears keep wanting to roll out!-whatta way to finish book.
Bettye LaVette whatta coupedegrac- thanks for sharing your AMAZING life.
Please play Regina again: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!
amazing
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this song says a lot
man... this is soooo good!
Stunning.
Her voice is like a mix of Mavis Staples and Tina Turner. I just bought my tickets to see her in Anchorage Alaska in April.
Damn!!! That's good!!
The entire album is wonderful. (Another favorite is "Choices", written by George Jones) Take note of the band backing her up: Drive-by Truckers, featuring Spooner Oldham on piano and David Hood (Patterson's father) on bass. The Elder Hood and Oldham were part of The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and were on many hit records with people such as Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett.
Wonderful!
I think they need to do another "Two Rooms".
Revamp and Restoration albums, April 2018- Restoration seems better
She owns!!!! this song now. Too bad Elton didn't make it the anthem for the early AIDS crisis.
goosebumps !!
Very good description,,,, i think youre right
i am heading for the tissues, their is but a handful that can pull off an Elyon song like that... Briliant.. Still crying during the second playing, Oh well!
So I'm glad Bettye's finally reaping her hard-earned rewards for hangin' in there when most would probably just quit the business altogether by now, especially after enduring all the BS she most likely had to deal with in doing so. And Atlantic (now owned by WMG-BOOOOOO!!!) should issue her an outright apology, but that's just my honest opinion. Props to a true soul survivor!
;-)
Would anyone agree that this version has the same emotional impact as Johnny Cash's version of HURT?? Just asking..
She is disturbingly( i hope that's how that's spelled) amazing. First song I have heard from her, but not the last!!
Obrigado
putain de chanteuse de grande très grande classe ! ça peut faire dire que l'Amérique a une tradition quand même ! wouahooooo
dang.
what is the betty lavette song with the words
some gave me my wings or fixed my broken wings so I can fly
I love that song can someone please help me
It is a version of The Beatle's Blackbird.
great great Elton John tune.
Don't open your mouth. Noises coming from your mouth are pain.
At least you have four.
I imagine Bettye singing this about Robin Williams.
wow....joseph muir....thanks
Hearing this, pisses me off to find out how Atlantic screwed her over back in the day. Final straw was when she had an official debut album set to go for them in '72 ('Child of the Seventies'/later reissued on CD under the title 'Souvenirs' by a French label almost 20 years later) only to be shelved at the very last minute by the company higher-ups with no reason given whatsoever. I've heard that album myself and I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt it would've gotten her over EASY. Damn shame.
will someone put the 2011 uncf perfomance on here or tell me the name of the song herbie nancock played the piano
It was Love Me Still. It is on UA-cam.
to apaixonado por essa mulher
sing it dammit
Good ELTON JOHN remake!!
fucking hell
Wine? :p
Song of all the survivors of AIDS from the 1980’s......
