This is a fantastic video, thanks for taking time to explain thoroughly.
Thanks
When you adjusted the camshafts did you rotate them so the timing marks on the sprockets line up to a specific position like 11 o clock and 1 o clock or did you just rotate the cams until there was no slack? Also cant you possibly damage a valve by rotating the cams like that? Cant seem to find much on these engines thank you for posting
You can rotate the cams but not that much maybe half turn or less until you can aligned the slack should be by the tensioner
@@autothechgarage6268 hes talking about the slack in between the cams
I need help my 2015 Chevy Malibu is in need I believe of this same thing where are you located I’m in Texas I took it to 2 mechanics gave up on it so I need a pro like you
I’m in Texas also 🧰
How did you remove the balancer sprocket? It keeps spinning and I don’t have anything to hold it.
Used the chain and the bolt on the main crank shaft have someone else hold while you break loose the bolt to balance shaft do not remove tensioner b4 breaking the balance shaft bolt hopes this helps
Their is an actual tool for that it holds both sprockets
Do you need a camshaft locking tool?
Or any kind of locking tools ???
No I don’t think so I didn’t use any
How did you take off the small chain with removing the bolt
I did remove it I just put it back
My 2015 Malibu 2.5l has plastic knocking sound that is louder in the cold weather but goes away about 95% when the engine gets warmed up. Same in the summer at start up, sounds like something hitting plastic on metal, its been this way for 10k miles now. Any clue? Maybe I should check out the chains / tensioner for play and wear? When you raise the idle the sound goes away mostly. The car & engine only has 45k miles on it. Thanks
Is the oil level ok? If it is then maybe you can do this on your next oil change try to do an engine oil flush maybe that will help
@@autothechgarage6268 Yes the oil level good. The car had 34k when I purchased it, found out the car was repossessed and sold on auction, then the dealer sold it to me. Maybe the first owners never changed the oil and worn something out.
The car finally displayed an engine code PO171. Lean air to fuel ratio.
Turns out the intake manifold was loose. The 3 intake manifold bolts were so loose they turned 2.5 rotations by hand. The plastic knocking sound went away after this repair. It's an easy fix.
@@GeorgeHamberhilldid you by chance experience your car not turning over immediately when you try to start?
@@HimothyCook Starting was never an issue.
How to get the key into place does the curve go down ?
I'm sorry what key?
Torque specs???
Thanks bro, you explained very well.
Thanks
How did you get the pulley bolt off I’ve tried everything lol
I think I used an impact
Hello, do camshaft phasers need to be unlocked, before installation? Like the Toyota's ones?
No just uninstall and reinstall
@@autothechgarage6268 Thank you!
Thanks for the video!
Does the timing cover have a Gasket or just RTV?
RTV
Does the vacumm pump have to be aligned a specific way?
I don’t think so
Hi - I am re-installing the balance shaft sprockets and the intake and exhaust have some play (I can move the sprocket in and out a bit). Does this matter?
Hi where do you have play? At the crankshaft sprocket?
@@autothechgarage6268 Yes both the on the secondary chain (intake/exhaust sprocket). It seemed to me too much for my liking so I used the original sprockets as the looked in great shape and upon install the play is gone. Not sure if my kit had incorrect sprocket sizes but they are tight now.
@@frankierodriguez5620 ok good I always check them side by side and match them for the same reason 👍
If my car stopped because of timing chain breaking on my Malibu. Do you think it is fixable? Or is my engine done?
If the valves didn’t came in contact with the pistons it might work
Thank you for this video sir it was very helpful. 👍🏼
Is this 2.5liter engine the same engine in the chevy Colorado truck?
It is a 2.5 but not sure if is the same never work on a Colorado
Yes same different valve cover design
What type of grease did you put on the chain ?
assembly lube
Are timing chain failures as common on these 2.5L's as all the other GM Ecotec engines?
Not sure I jut decide to install new kit since I disassembled the engine
The Ecogen 2.4l are more prone to chain stretch if run low on oil. My 2.5l on 15 Malibu is at 188k, have not had to do chains. Equinox 2.4 go between 120-150k miles. Had to do chain replacement at 138k on mine. Throwing cam sensor codes for 3k miles or so, finally went into limp mode. I didn’t have chain slap noises.
Thanks for the videol Im doing that on my daughter's 2015 malibu 2.5 today.
Awesome 😎
How did that go? Did you record it?
How did you manage to get the special tools needed for the phasers and the 2 sprockets?
I didn’t use any special tools. Whit special tool you’re talking about to lock the phasers?
@@autothechgarage6268 I thought you had replaced the sprockets too. The phasers are those caps on the wheels and you need a special tool to take them out. I guess you are just showing the marks, not fixing t he timing wutg new parts.
@@cartroublewannafix8611 phasers were not removed from cams yes just showing the marks
I see you changed the balance chain and took the the balance sprocket out. I want to replace the chain on my daughter's too, but the bolt won't even budge. I can't get it out. Any idea how I can take a stubborn bolt out? Also I put a new timing chain, and no matter how many revolutions i do, I always end up with the chain marks marks, one tooth off.. Intake sprocket , chain mark one tooth off 10'clock mark, exhaust sprocket chain mark , one tooth off 2' 'o clock and crank shaft, one tooth off mark. Any idea why? I changed them back and forth and it always ends up like that. I would apreciate any help from anyone. Thanks. The car is a 2015 chev malibu 2.5 but it's the same as the 2014.
@@cartroublewannafix8611 well on the balance sprocket bolt I use an impact I hold the sprocket with a prybar be careful not to damage any other parts… and as far as the timing marks when you first set them on time the marks are matching? And when you turn the engine over the marks don’t match if you mean that once you have the timing set right and you turn the engine over they’re not going to match anymore
How do I Put it in top dead center?
Cylinder number one need to be all the way to the top take spark plug out you can use a long screwdriver turn the crankshaft clockwise until the screwdriver stop going up
I just used the instructions for the 2.4 eco tech on my 2.5 to find it. You turn the motor over with the timing cover off so you can see the crankshaft sprocket and both cams at the same time. You want to turn over the motor by hand until the key for the crankshaft sprocket is at 12 o'clock and the intake sprocket timing mark is at about 10 or 11 o'clock and the exhaust sprocket mark is at around 1 to 2 o'clock, all at the same time. I used a 1' long wooden dowel in the #1 spark plug hole to see where the piston was at but I don't think it was really needed.
What state are you in?
Texas
@@autothechgarage6268 how much would you charge for a timing chain replacement on this same vehicle ?
