Chas Buddy Rogers adored Mary. Mary saw him in Wings 1927, and requested he audition for her leading man in "My Best Girl 1927". Actually My Best Girl was her first on screen romantic kiss with Rogers, and a wake-up call for Fairbanks. If you haven't seen the film it is a must. Unfortunately, Pia Zadora tore down Pickfair and destroyed one of the major gems of early Hollywood History, such a loss and many were upset by this including Doug Fairbanks Jr. Ty for posting and keeping this nostalgia alive.
It's too bad it ended for no reason. And It's sad to hear when actors and actresses become recluses in old age and alcoholics. That seems to happen a lot
Ever since I watched her movie, where she was the daughter of a Irish police officer, sorry movies name has slipped my old brain; I was sold on her acting! And she grab my heart in silence, at that!
The silent presence in Mary’s life was always alcohol. Owen Moore was a drinker, as was every member of her immediate family. And, as those family members began to die prematurely, Mary’s drinking (which Fairbanks hates) picked up. Eventually, even after her divorce from Fairbanks & her marriage to Rogers, as her looks began to deteriorate & she gained weight, she retreated into the bottle behind the walls of Pickfair, & never left again. The honorary Oscar she received at Pickfair, which can still be seen today, shocked most of the people who viewed it. Mary’s last sound film, “Secrets”, with Leslie Howard, is a witness to her acting power. She could easily (& should) have continued to act. She did charity work, wrote a book, & adopted two children (which did not work out), but it was all in vain. Pickford & Fairbanks’ worst mistake was to separate & divorce. Neither of them ever recovered... Here’s to them both, “by the clock”. And here’s to all their wonderful films! Gone, but never forgotten! 🥂
Alcohol also eventually put her into her bed, with a drink in her nightstand, & that is basically where she remained. Very few people were allowed in to see her from that point on.
@@rustyruss2962 I think that Rogers being so much younger did not help. Her world had quite literally disappeared, & Rogers always looked good. I heard that she went to France, I think to accept an award, & I heard that when she saw photos of herself, that was the end. After that she went into her reclusive stage. It was such a shame, because she easily could have continued on. I honestly believe, however, that the divorce from Fairbanks is really what did them both in, in the end.
I just read about the time Doug and Mary first met Rudolph Valentino. Mary was mesmerized by Rudy and Douglas was extremely jealous to the point of being very rude to Valentino. Eventually, they all become close friends though. Douglas was one of Rudy's pallbearers at Valentino's very elaborate funeral.
I read that not long ago! Mary said she couldn't understand why he was being that way to Valentino, he had much success in the movies, himself. She had never seen him move so fast, and act so bad to anyone like that! (not exact quote) But as you said, Douglas mellowed out and he became friends with Rudolph, until the latter died!
I'm glad both of your channels are going. I remember reading you were having a bit of a problem with copyright law or something. This is a wonderful way to keep the memory of the American Movie heritage alive, thank you.

She was probably the first woman genius ever. She not only made HUNDREDS of films but built and funded the Motion Picture Home and Hospital for retired stars who had small amounts of money left. She also gave away and funded many many more things, she was one of a kind. Shame on the City of Los Angeles letting them tear down her home Pickfair.
A fearless women who beat the studio heads at negotiating. However, it is generally recognized that Florence Lawrence was the first female cinema star to have her name in lights. Max Linder, the first male.
That was great love just like Paulette Goddard and Charlie Chaplin, a tumultuous love story but often a passionate love isn't without storms. A movie should be made about this two icons of the silent era. Very few stars of that era are portrayed on the screen.
Mary Pickford really had influenced the female women´s fashion world wide. What she has worn and how she had appeared very much reminds me of the generqtion of my grandmother ( born in 1987 )
Thanks for this video, a little before my time but love the photography those days some great shots. They always dressed so classy back then. Thanks again for your great work. Brenton.

Valentino and Fairbanks were extremely close friends along with Chaplin and Keaton. Im surprised you havent spoken about Valentino. Fairbanks was his best man and a pollbearer at his funeral. Some of there home movies are hilarious. There are some great pics of Rudy and Charlie as well. Its also a shame they let PickFair and Falcons Lair be torn down. They should have been put on the national registries. It came out years later the Person that bought PickFair said it was haunted so it was torn down and another house was built. That's Disgraceful.
I liked your video but you seem to jump out of sequence quite a bit, making you hard to follow. You went from Pickford’s marriage to Buddy Rogers back to the Douglas Fairbanks breakup, messing up the content. I have seen it done in your other videos but not to this extent. Try to tighten things up, if you would.
Well done presentations, but please stop calling movie people “royalty”, or “ stars”. Those appellations belong to others who are not fabrications, or fabricators. It’s not reality.

It’s Davies, not Davis (Marion). I’ve watched several of your videos and they are riddled with inaccuracies. You should hire someone to help you make credible videos. You can’t be much of an old movie buff because your mistakes should be obvious to you. I’m not trying to be mean. Accurate information should be of the utmost importance to you.

Buddy Rogers was Mary's 3rd and best husband. Their marriage lasted for the rest of her life.
He was known to be a nice guy as well. My late mom received a letter from him back in the day, she liked his music.
Anthony Slide, supposed Film Historian , has written that Buddy was gay.
Yes, she was a brilliant woman and i believe they showed her in her home in the late 1970s. She always remained beautiful with class.
Buddy was Good Man
I think Mary Pickford was just so beautiful.

Mary was drinking before her mother died, her brother Jack Pickford and their mother were all drinkers. It infuriated Fairbanks.

Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks DID NOT have an "AFFAIR", they were MARRIED!!!!

"Griffith" doesn't end in an S.
Wait a sec, photos of Fairbanks Jr. and Sr are all mixed up? With the fake tan, I can't discern father from son.
Mary looked like Vilmy Bankey, who costarred with Valentino in "The Son of the Sheik."
