Over a yr ago my 13 yr old greyhound suddenly passed away on her bed in the lounge room just after I got home from work at 9.30 in the morning, she closed her eyes to sleep one last time, a short time later she called out like she was crying in her sleep like she was having a bad dream but I knew instantly that she was dying so I ran over to her thinking I could snap her out of death but she was already gone she was no longer there anymore even though her body was still slowly shutting down it was sad but amazing. It was a honor to watch and hold her paw it was very quick and very peaceful RIP Butcher Never forgotten

I lost my precious baby yesterday, and I'm so torn up with grief. Part of it was having to decide on euthanasia without having the luxury to plan.
I took him to emergency vet expecting to have treatment for pneumonia or something. And I was shocked to find my baby was in congestive heart failure and his chest was full of fluid.
It was going to take $3000 to try to save him and continuous daily treatment for the remainder of his life.
Knowing our Cousteau was suffering so much, terrified from struggling to breathe and knowing that was likely to eventually happen again. And knowing how Cousteau would hate being constantly poked and prodded daily as he declined, I knew Cousteau would not be happy with that.
We chose to take away Cousteau's little breathing nightmare and comfort him as best we could despite the situation.
So hearing what you had to say was such comfort.
    Thank you!

Lap of Love is coming tomorrow evening to put down my favorite kitty ever. She is ready now because she has kidney failure and has stopped eating, drinking, and has lost weight rapidly. Now she’s hiding, and I know. I have used Lap of Love before, and it was as wonderful experience as it could have been.
    They are SO companionate! 💕🙏💫

I watched this video a couple weeks before letting go of my sweet boy Moose. Lap of Love was amazing. Moose went sooo peacefully on March 22, 2022.
We were together for 13 years and 8 months and being my first pup it was really rough the months after. On the July 11, 2022 I rescued a 10 week old Rottweiler-Labrador Retriever named Duke. I highly recommend Lap of Love.

My boy was nearly 3 Buddy and the love and joy of our lives.
He was injured by a moving vehicle and S/b vets and able to come home 3 days later then 2 weeks down the track and he was having difficulty passing urine and leaving little puddles everywhere but never on the carpet.
Decided to euthanise as he was loaded with fluid.Unable to pass a catheter.
It’s heartbreaking to come home and he’s not here.
Our road is very busy and certainly not an area for fur babies.
Miss our little guy so much.
God has all things even the little ones in His Hands.

I'm a bit sad I did have the money and the time...Because the operation we had has hurt my cat more than helped and he wasn't happy with every visit to the doctors - he didn't want to go. And the emotional toll I had while giving him pills and injections was horrible. It was a terrible end. I wish I would have just spent time with him instead of trying to "save" him...

When we lost my cat, Mandy, my husband could not let her go. Mandy was 19 and had kidney failure. Just after Christmas that year, she suddenly crashed. We took her to the vet and they said she was end-stage kidney failure and the options we had. My husband chose to give her IVs at home and medication. It was emotionally horrible but he could not let her go. She rallied for a time and seemed ok, even though a very advanced age. But, she began to go downhill again and was cold all the time, crawling over to the air vents to lay on them. I took her on the bed and she would crawl under the covers to sleep. After a few days of this, I walked into the room we had made comfortable in with her bed and water and food, and she looked up at me and cried horribly. I picked her up, wrapped her in a blanket and put her on a bed. Went to my husband and told him we have to let her go, she's begging me. Yes, they know when it's time, we need to listen. My husband just could not do it. He sat in the car while I took her into the vet and stayed with her during her "going away". We have a 10-year old cat now and I will never, ever allow that long good-bye again. I don't feel it's fair to the pet. I've made that clear now. Your pet will know when they want to go. Listen to them. Mandy now sits in a very lovely box in our family room with her favorite toy next to her. Emma is her new little sister.

Thank you so much for this video! I am having my pet euthanized tomorrow by one of your doctors. It is comforting to know that it's okay to let go and ease the suffering of our beloved animals. This is my first and very difficult time losing my pet, Valentino, he is a Lhasa apso that's almost 16yrs. I made the decision when I noticed his quality of life would not get any better and paid more attention to his suffering. However painful the decision, am rest assured its the right one. I am at peace with it. Thank you for your specialty and kindness to share this information. I wasn't willing to face this and kept on delaying the inevitable. God bless You for helping families ease their pain and suffering for themselves as well as their pets.

Thank you so much for your kind discussion.
My dear Goldendoodle Skip is 13 and was diagnosed in July with adinocarcinoma. it is progressing as Skip isn't able to breathe through his nose much, and breathes through his mouth.
He is so kind and humble.
This is soooo difficult because you see the external nasal erosion- and isnt visible is worse.
I know I have to make the decision.
    With appreciation,
    Kathy

Thank you for this information. My 4 lb - 13 year old chihuahua started acting off this past few months. Our veterinarian told us she has lost at least 50% of her vision and her liver is half the size it should be. Probably has dementia and is urinating on the floor. Changed her food to Purina Bright Minds which has given her energy. Still seems disoriented at times.

My dog (chihuahua) was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, stage 6 heart murmur (the most advanced heart murmur) about 3 years prior to her death. With medications, diet, supplements and good care, I think she had mostly a good quality of life during those years. We didn't have any emergency vet visits. What took her was renal failure. I had to say goodbye to her because she was starting to suffer due to the renal failure...I was surprised that Dr. McVety leaned more towards saying goodbye to a dog with CHF. I guess my dog and I have been very lucky because we didn't experience the bad things that she talked about in the video. Informative video.

I have had 4 Chihuahuas with CHF. My oldest has been managing on medications for years and doing well. Two of my others were gone within 24 hours of when I noticed they were breathing too fast. And they suffered. They basically drowned in their own fluids. My Cooper, who just passed this week, managed on medications for about 5 months, but we were on our second visit to the ER within a month and based on the xray outcome and the vet's advice, I made the decision to not prolong his suffering. I'm sure it depends on the dog and their genetics, but it can happen so fast and I do wish with my other two that they could have just gone to sleep instead of suffering. The guilt I felt with them was very, very bad. I still feel guilt and second guess my decision with Cooper, but I am thankful it was quick and he didn't have to suffer the way my other two did.

@@Basey I am very sorry for your losses. Thank You for sharing your story, experiences and knowledge. When my Chihuahua was in CHF, I was worried most of the time. One of her vets said to look out for the labored breathing. But fortunately, I never saw it. When my dog went into advanced kidney failure (because of the heart failure/heart failure meds) in February 2022, her other vet said that end-stage kidney failure (and the symptoms that accompany it) was one of two health conditions where she intervened and advised towards euthanasia. The other grim diagnosis that she said didn’t have good outcome was bone cancer. That is what drew me to this video, the guilt after putting my dog down. I wish that we didn’t have to make that decision with our pets. But, I think it was probably the best decision in both of our cases. I had another Chihuahua. My two Chihuahuas were half-sisters. She passed away naturally from a brain tumor in May 2021, less than 8 days after diagnosis. They were both 13 when they passed away.

Every living being strives to stay alive. Every moment of living: painful, joyous or just plain mundane, is precious. I would not want to be euthanized just because I am in pain or have a terminal illness. My choice would be to remain alive until all of my self and body is ready to die, living my life to completion. Dying is an integral part of being alive. I have come to believe that the death process is every living being's way of saying goodbye to having been alive.
Throughout my life, I have had the privilege of caring for 11 cats and 4 dogs. I loved each of them dearly. Two of our dogs and all of our cats lived a long life; two dogs died at the age of 4 and eight; both where hit by a car. My cats lived to the age of 16, 18, 21, and 22 years. Each died when they where ready to leave their body: a natural death. When one of my animals became ill, and recovery was doubtful, I prayed for courage and guidance to help them reach their own end, on their time table, not mine. What I had to do was overcome my fears of accompanying them on their final journey. I was blessed. The life and death of each of my pets taught me a great deal. All the proponents of euthanasia stress that you think about your pet's quality of life. It's time to start examining on how we respect the dying process of the animals in our care. They have a right to die when they choose to die. The body makes very potent painkillers that far outperform any vet or doctor can prescribe. The "quality of life" argument for euthanizing our pet is an encouragement to avoid facing the dying process. Every vet would warn me about the suffering of my pet: There is suffering when there is pain, but each of my animal companions showed me that each breath was precious to them. There was no horror in their deaths.

I had to put down my dog on January 16, 2023 the day after her 10th birthday. She was diagnosed the Friday before with diabetes she wasn’t eating good they had her overnight in the hospital and they said they brought her sugar level down. It was at 772 and they brought it down and when they sent me home with the insulin I gave it to her Saturday night she ate a little bit. I gave it to her Sunday morning. She ate some Sunday night. She only ate like two morsel of kibbleI still gave her the insulin atI gave it to and I was so afraid that I gaveher insulin on an empty stomach. I called an emergency vet and they said try to give her any type of food you can, I brought it back to my vet Monday and they said they couldn’t even read her sugar level and her kidney function was 25 and she had an infection so they told me the best thing is to put her down and I don’t know if I did the right thing

I AM ONE OF THOSE THAT WANT TO MAKE THINGS BETTER BUT THAT FEELS SO TERRIBLE FOR ME THEY ARE THERE ONE MINUTE AND THEN GONE . CAN A DOG WITH CONGESTIVE HEART ISSUES AT
21 PASS IN HIS HOME AND MADE COMFORTABLE . I LIVED IN THE BUSH OF ALASKA WHERE MY DOG IS FROM I HAVE SEEN ALL HIS DOG BUDDIES HOWL WITH HIM WHEN A COUPLE DOGS CAME TO OUR YARD TO LAY ON A SANDY HILL AND THEY ALL WERE WITH HIM WHEN HE PASSED . I AM IN LOWER 49 NOW BUT WOULD LIKE HIM TO PASS AT HOME AS NATURAL AND IN COMFORT WITH ME AND THE CATS WITH HIM. IS THAT POSSIBLE

I believe your pet will let you know. That is how I've done it for all my yorkies since 1999. If your gut is telling you its not time, then its not time. It might be time in 2 days but trust your gut. I don't have any hospice vets around so I don't have the compassion of that kind of vet, wish I did. I took my yorkie in on Friday and the vet said "oh, look at her, she is not there, she is not happy, you need to euthanize her". Nope, not how you do it. She is my pet and I feel like I'm the one that needs to make that decision. Sorry, just had to vent. Maybe it is soon time but she can't tell me 'she's not there'. I think I was looking for an "I recommend', not "you should...."
