CommonSenseJoe you are lying about it destroying private healthcare in this country. Something like the ACA is the only possible way to keep the private health insurance industry from pricing itself out of existence. Even the senior insurance company executives admitted that the situation was untenable if the status quo was maintained.
That the ACA didn't go far enough to control costs is a intellectually defensible position (and one I happen to agree with). Yet at least part of that was due to either compromise to gain Republican support in the US Congress (which largely wasn't needed) and sabotage by Federal and State Republicans and other conservatives.
CommonSenseJoe, being disingenuous to the point of falsehood is lying in my book and you continue to do so. Please show me any proof of an insurance company(let alone a major one, Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield) simply refusing to write any new policies due to the ACA, not just deciding not to participate in private exchanges.
No under the previous status quo there were multiple factors that contribute to the cost of health care in this country. These include costs to for profit healthcare companies that have nothing to do with healthcare goods or services, such as advertising and marketing campaigns, which for the larger ones average hundreds of millions to billions of dollars annually. Furthermore if you are comparing either the current or pre-ACA system to either single payer or another not-for-profit system, then profit, as well as the billions of dollars for-profit healthcare companies spend on things like advertising and marketing costs cannot honestly be rolled into "operating costs" because such things largely wouldn't exist in a healthcare system that is public or not-profit!
You even tacitly admitted the last part, at least in regards to profit, your "only 3%" number statistic. Although, you apparently either are not aware of the contradiction with your earlier statement or you just don't care. Even if that figure correct (it's the first time I've seen a profitabilty statistic for the entire healthcare that low, so I'm skeptical); it is also at best very disingenuous, since it undoubtedly includes the compensation senior executive (and if you complain about the compensation of government employees doing similar jobs, I can guarantee you it's not multiple millions of dollars) per year, advertising, marketing, and other costs unrelated to providing healthcare at private hospitals, insurance, and the companies that produce medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, etc... as an operating costs despite the fact that they at best rather indirectly contribute to anyone's actual healthcare.
Also you are incorrect, or lying, about the "only reason" healthcare costs are so high is a lack of payments for Medicare and Medicaid. For example, one of the primary drivers for rising health costs has historically been that since the 1980s most healthcare providers, from hospital emergency rooms to private physicians, are required by federal law (a law signed by Ronald Reagan) to treat those with both serious and life threatening medical conditions that come to them regardless of their ability to pay. Most of such people were both uninsured and didn't qualify for either Medicare or Medicaid so healthcare providers pass these costs on to those that can, those with health insurance and those that can pay out-of-pocket. Setting aside morality, this is one of the most important reasons to work towards universal healthcare coverage by either private or public means, because everyone in the USA was already baring a shared burden in the most cost ineffective way!
By the way increasing Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement payments was a part of the ACA that a number of Republican controlled state governments rejected. If this was really the single cause of raising health care costs then please explain those rejections as anything other than politically motivated. I'm sure you can, but only with a continued disregard for honest discussion.
As far as your overall contention that the ACA "did nothing" to make healthcare more affordable it did plenty, but they are all medium to long-term solutions(e.g. more people with either insurance or Medicaid means less people using emergency rooms as their primary healthcare providers, covered preventative care so people can afford to be proactive about health issues instead of letting their health get so bad they must get more drastic and expensive treatment, etc...) that will take at least another decade or more to have their full effect. Expecting the mess that is the economics of the US healthcare system to be sorted out in several years when it took decades to get this bad is ludicrous!

I think we're done with career politicians with no experience in the private sector. A career politician who was born into the middle class is NOT middle class - they wouldn't have any idea about what the middle class needs and aspires to, or how jobs and businesses are created. Term limits is the only way to keep politicians from becoming "career" politicians, and making sure that they go to DC to serve us.

Gabe Pressman was investigating the illegal towing of cars in NY during the Koch administration which was part of the parking violations scandal and covered the city towing my 1950 Bentley, illeaglly. That coverage made my case against the city. Gabe and Geraldo were the guys of the day. Gabe was mild mannered whereas Geraldo would not hesitate to participate in a fist fight while covering a story.
