TRIP REPORT - Southwest Airlines (737-800), Des Moines to St Louis

- It's 2020, and of course, the era of COVID-19 is upon us. Flying is feeling a little more normal these days, though the crowds are still (obviously) lighter and masks are a constant reminder that we're not out of the woods yet. Even still, Southwest is doing a fantastic job providing options for their customers to travel safely. This trip was my first to Des Moines. It's a nice smaller airport, though I can see why they're talking about replacing the terminal. The flight went smoothly and I was even treated to a rare-ish arrival on runway 29 at STL. Hope you enjoy!

I was actually on top of the parking garage that day spotting that Delta 767-300! It was an Air National Guard charter, we get those fairly frequently.
Oh wow. That’s awesome that you had a good flight and I’m so happy these are back! Also, I love the voice over, but a few suggestions! One of which is that I really like your driving time lapses from the airport to hotel and airport to house or vice versa. Also, a walk to baggage claim and your car would be nice! But awesome video Jacob!😸😻😸
OMG I CAME BACK TO THis channel after so long!! it hasn’t changed! I’m 10 now the last time I saw this channel was when I was 7! Can’t wait to see the car washes and trains! Thanks to you I upload train and transportation vids because you got me into it!! Thanks for the inspiration!! 😃😃 second, I love hotels like you do and love being in them and I love transportation like planes boats, and most of all, trains! Thanks for being an awesome channel for entertainment and also a great place to relate to! Bye!!
Your photography shows off the beauty of the Southwest colors! Nice work as always, Jacob!
My favorite "nerdy" channel is back.
Like so many others, I've missed your videos! Thank you!
been a while since the last trip report! nice to see one again!
Another great trip review! Also, Iowa is the state where the Ryko Car Wash Systems manufacturing building is! It’s in Grimes, but it used to be in Des Moines.
That delta 767 was prob a football team charter. Great video, very interesting! I subbed!
It's definitely been a journey of reminiscing watching your videos this evening. The last one I watched was a hotel I stayed at in Des Moines. This one is the same route I flew after that stay, back in early January last year, before going on to stay with a friend in East Alton. We're on full lockdown here in England, and even going to a different part of the city in which I live is illegal. I can't wait to travel again. I'm hoping I might get Stateside in July, if Covid allows!
What were y’all doing in my stomping grounds?! Wish I would have seen this sooner. 🙂
Southwest was very much an afterthought at Des Moines as they only commenced service from here maybe five years ago. That’s why they are separated and only have one gate. I’ve heard some rumblings that once (or if ever) the new terminal is built that SW would love to really use Des Moines more than other airlines do.
A5 is mainly used by United express or for overflow by American or Delta. There is one jet bridge on that level that goes up instead of down as with most bridges. I’ve flown out of that gate multiple times on E-145s and E-175s.
Hope you guys enjoyed my neck of the woods. DSM is my home, so if anyone has questions please ask. 🙂
Very nice trip report. I’ve never flown with southwest
I flew from DSM-ORD, ORD-RSW, on United and stayed in Marco, Island for spring break for seven days on the way back my family & I rode On one of Americans A321 Reg: N998AN From RSW-DFW & from DFW back home to Des Monies. And I had lots of fun considering that I hadn't been on a plane in over a year.
Love your airplane trips! Keep it up
Wow, Des Moines Airport has automated flight announcements too! I'm noticing more airports around the country are moving to that system instead of the gate agent announcing them. We have them at Sky Harbor as well for American Airlines and American Eagle Flights.
Next week you should do a hotel revisit review of the Days Inn Blue springs or Norfolk airport
Glad to see your Trip Reports again! Have fun and stay safe!
That lower gate area actually has a jetbridge and I haven't seen any ground boarding's in Des Moines for a while now (I remember Midwest doing it back in the day). We are actually scheduled to get a new terminal built in the next decade or so if the airport can secure the last bit of funding. It should have almost double the gates, be a lot more modern, and offer a lot more amenities.
The Frontier landed in the opposite direction so it could slow down faster
OZ in the day had FH-227s into DSM besides the 9s so im guessing it left over from then plus AA eagle had ATRs in there and Great Lakes few 1900s in there
Awesome trip report! Good to be back :D
i remember des moines with southwest starting only flew to chicago to las vegas then switched to st louis then they added phoenix now denver no wonder why i saw a second southwest plane in des moines
5:43 By the way I love that song! Where did you get it?
Nice
Nice video
when ive landed in st louis its on runway 12R i believe and it gets you right to E gates and the taxi is shorter than the FAs speech
I flew "the duck" from Chicago to Phoenix! Good flight I must say. Sat in the forward wingbox fire exit. Great seat. BTW have you ever run into Cpt Moonbeam the youtubber pilot in the terminal?
For someone who is from Iowa, I must say: Welcome to Iowa!
Your next video?
Hi, my friend! I have a question. What is the music you used in your trip report from some years back from a Southwest flight from St Louis to Washington DC? I think it was at the end. Thank you!
Yay! So glad you’re back!
Cool getting 40k subs!
There's a car wash in St. Peters, Missouri called the St. Peters Car Wash. They have a Balanger tunnel with Simoniz chemicals. Can you film that wash?
theres no linger designated gating any more they did that a while back any airlines can use any gate i used to work there its a really great idea
Really makes sense a lot of sense for a smaller airport. I’m surprised it isn’t more common in markets like DSM.
Thank you. I like seeing these from you.
The ground boarding area is only used in VERY specific purposes
my next trip report should be to hartford ct.
seems to be Des Moines airport terminals are together unlike Omaha's
Omaha has a crappy airport
@@Thunderbolt1996Productions yes and no it has improved in the past 10 years but the concourses are divided and lots of local restaurants and no real national restaurants but there is a new parking garage, renovated restrooms after security, some renovated jet bridges, Omaha Eppley Airfield was supposed to in 2021 renovate the terminal making it one long terminal those plans have now been put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic
southwest is a recent addition of des moines airport
Omaha airport North Garage is where rental car returns are first two levels also when under construction of the new garage you'd have to take a shuttle to terminal which sucked now just take the elevator up to 3rd floor take pedestrian walkway to terminal then down to floor one main terminal
And this relates to the upload how?
@@liflyer0413 Des Moines Airport compared to Omaha Airport
Des Moines, Iowa was where Ryko was manufactured before moving to Grimes, Iowa!
You flew from Des Moines to St. Louis? It’s like four hours by car
your plane had the old evolve interior which is better than the 737-700 evolve/heart but not as good as the 737-800 heart interior this interior before 737-800 heart came along was my favorite, this interior has more legroom than the 700s but not as much as the 800s but love the mood lighting and this does not matter for a short flight like this
I was a little surprised by that. I rarely ever catch an -800 with the Evolve interior. In fact I’m pretty sure this was only my second one.
@@TheElevatorChannel ive been on the -800 evolve interior a total of 4 times twice in 2013 once in 2014 and once in 2019
Well at least it's less people in the airport
is that the runway thats out in the middle of nowhere that goes across lindberg blvd
Yep. Typically they only use 29 for departures (so you just taxi to the beginning of the runway and take off away from the terminal), or land on 11 towards the terminal. When used in that confirmation it’s fairly convenient.
@@TheElevatorChannel took off to MSP on a NW DC-9/30 in 06 i think
@@TheElevatorChannel was built to allievate the TWA congestion but by the time it was finished TWA was no more
Wow! A truck as a rental car?
more people should do that.
@@SamSitar would be nice, but generally they're more expensive
Have you been to Omaha Eppley Airfield before?
Can you and Dan be in a future car wash video?
fly to Omaha sometime please
STOP ASKING!!!
Yeah, stop asking.
