The story that I know is a little different:
Adi Shankaracharya goes through the state of Samadhi to Kailasa to meet Shiva. He sees Ganesha beautifully & poetically describing his mother Goddess Parvati, writing the same on the Walls of Kailasa.
Adi Shankara starts memorizing the Shlokas from Left to Right and keeps going. Ganesha suddenly realizes the presence of Adi Shankara and immediately starts erasing the Shlokas from Right to Left. Even with powerful memorization, Adi Shankara could only memorize 41 Shlokas, forcing him to complete it in his own words
I too have herd this version but with a variation it is Parvati devi who erases it...and the rest the same...
