Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, an esteemed Palestinian-Canadian physician and humanitarian, was born in the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza on August 15, 1958. He is renowned for his unwavering commitment to peace, education, and women’s empowerment, particularly following the tragic loss of three daughters during Israel’s Operation Cast Lead in January 2009.
Abuelaish studied medicine at Cairo University before moving to Canada in 1987 to pursue further training as a gynecologist. In addition to being a respected medical professional, he has dedicated himself to promoting cross-border understanding between Palestinians and Israelis through various initiatives such as the Daughters for Life Foundation (DFLF), which provides scholarships to young female students from conflict zones around the world.
His work with DFLF led him to be named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2010. The foundation also inspired his bestselling memoir, “I Shall Not Hate,” published in 2010, which chronicles his personal journey towards forgiveness after losing his family members.
In recognition of his efforts, Abuelaish received numerous awards, including the Order of Ontario, the United Nations Prize in Field Support, and the Right Livelihood Award, often referred to as the Alternative Nobel Prize. His advocacy for peace and justice continues to inspire people worldwide, making him a prominent figure in global discussions about conflict resolution and reconciliation.

Shehzad, I am a regular viewer of your podcasts from India and most episodes are great! But this one is amazing. I cannot imagine what Dr Izzeldin has gone through in his personal life and yet has so much faith and courage to say what he is saying. God bless him. I watch in horror every single day at what is happening in Gaza. It is unimaginably horrifying how the Palestinian people are suffering, how violent Israel is, how complicit the entire international community is in this holocaust. More strength to you Dr Izzeldin; huge respect for you and your people.

The problem with this conflict is it's really hard to support actions of any group involved. Both sides wants to eliminate other but only one side has power.

Seen his interviews a few times and am always impressed by his empathy and message for peace despite losing so much. Somehow he gives me the vibes of Gandhi. People like him should be the spokesmen and leaders of the Palestinian people instead of Hamas. Given the immense asymmetry of hard power, Palestinians should reject violence from their side as an option and continue to strengthen their case with moral force a-la satyagraha. Lets be clear though - its debatable if Gandhi's program lead India to freedom - however it mass-mobilized ordinary people of India who were aloof and created immense sympathy for the cause in Britain and America and when the opportunity arose after geo-political events of world war 2, the British were comfortable handing over power to the congress and getting out. Will it work for Palestine faced with settlers bent on cleansing not simply colonizing? Not sure but satyagraha is hell of a lot better, more empowering and most importantly life-preserving and life-affirming than the death-cult agenda of Hamas. Palestinians should make it clear that they want to live, live well and live well with Jews as friends and neighbors. This starts foremost with rejecting the death embracing values of Shahada and getting behind a non-hate agenda advocated by people like him.

I think the march of return was quite effective strategy and should have been continued instead of oct 7. The British were hardly mild with the Satyagrahis. How many were killed, heads and limbs were broken, how many were hanged and hauled to torture chambers of kala pani? Inspite of skepticism by his colleagues Gandhi persisted because he had huge conviction on the moral strength of the cause. He viewed independence as a multi-decade process of protest and negotiation instead of a revolution which inevitably leads to more violence and chaos. 10 march of returns is still better and more effective than the horrific conditions in Gaza now.

Why oct 7 happened, why crying victim now?
Oct 7th happened because israel has held 2 million people in an open air prison with only two exits and entries, and continuously steals land and houses with force, if you don't know that then maybe you need to read a little. You ask a very good question but somehow ignore the basic issue. The issue is not the recent attacks from both sides. Those are the outcomes, not the issue. The issue is Israel's expansion and occupation of Palestinian land. They dont even care for 1967 borders and keep building illegal settlements in the West bank. Gaza is blockaded from all sides and it;s people live as prisoners all their lives, I dont even know if you will be able to read this comment such is the control. We as Indians have suffered occupation and should not overlook the issue at hand here. How could there be peace with an ongoing occupation?

The question on basis of ground reality is what Hamas hoped to achieve by those attacks . Did it expect Israel to cow down in fear and accept all their demands ?

And the historically proven way to end a messy and seemingly perpetual conflict is to develop trade and boost the economy . Europe experienced wars and conflict for millennia but are now some of the peaceful and most developed countries . And that seemed to be happening with Israel signing Abraham Accords with the Gulf countries and the announcement of the India Middle East Europe Corridor .
All those plans came crashing down by this conflict .
And common sense is the biggest casualty in this conflict . People are supporting Palestine only because they are Muslim and people are supporting Israel only because they are anti Muslim .
