Great Shirt! My experience on sizing Iron Heart shirts is similar to yours. I typically wear a medium, but the large size fits me better in IH. The western cut is more slim fitting than the work cuts. IH offers most of their flannels in both cuts.
HI mate!!! My problem is that if I size up for more room in the chest, the length and the length of the sleeve looks awkward; on the other hand, I prefer the western style to the worker style, which is why I always ask the IH team that look for the larger in the size that I choose. And being expensive, need to be careful.

Cheers Diego. I normally use Brave Star. Good garments, and good prices. Take a look at them. Japanese denim, made in California. Having said that. This shirt is lovely. I want one. I think I would prefer their work fit. I like a baggier look. Great review, thank you.

Good stuff.. did you have to size up? They say to size up one with Iron heart.. is that the case?
The trick is to go for the chest measurements; the XL has 23 inches, and my ideal size is 23 because I like slim fit, but most people size up to have more room to layer up. So far, every Iron Heart UHF that I have is XL. If you want to buy one, check on the size and measurements and choose one with your best-fit shirt's measurements (chest). Get a measuring tape going to be your best friend.

I know he’s already answered your question but I thought I’d share my sizing info in case it helps you make a decision. I am 5’10” & weight 200lbs and feel more comfortable in XXL. I’m sure XL would work but would be snug for me. I own the ultra heavy flannel in the red color way so sizing may be a little different than black. I haven’t checked that.
What is your height and weight? The shirt is a perfect fit.
