  • The early Tesla Model S cars have had their charging speeds reduced in an over the air update, to prolong the battery life. In this video I charge the car at a Tesla Supercharger when the battery was at 8% state of charge and look at the charging speeds.

    Mmmm interesting... I was wondering if my 2014 Model S 85 was charging at the normal speed... as it is very slow... and it seems to be as slow as yours but it doesn't feel "normal" to me. I've had many Tesla before but not as old and the charging speed was much higher. I won't pay 13k for a new battery on a car that's worth 30k...

    Our 2013 Model S charges at rate (kW) = 120 - SOC%. Ie. at 30% state of charge we get 110-30=80 kW. But our Max charge rate is limited to 90 kW not 120 kW because we have the first A generation battery pack

      Yes, it was 8-9 months ago. But the warranty replacements are new as such, just "remanufacturered"....i.e. refurbs. The charging system is still throttled back on all these older Model S though, so that is what the video demonstrates.

      You can pay a monthly subscription for cheaper electricity, but that's only worth it if you intend to use their network regularly. I don't subscribe to any charging network scheme as I rarely use DC rapid charging. I just pay as you go.

    Don't give tesla a pass. Don't get me wrong, I love my 2015 85D. Best car I've ever owned and I've own a lot of good cars.
    But they sold us a car that was supposed to charge faster and then changed the speed with no compensation.
    They didn't do it to help us. They did it So the batteries wouldn't fail during warranty.
    I drive from Ma to fla a couple of times a year and because it charges so slowly, it adds 4 hrs to my trip.
    They did it for them not us.
    To your point, it does charge faster than others of that time period but I didn't buy those others. Nor did those others cost $101k

      A long time ago I had a Dyson washing machine and its unique selling point was that the drum twisted (two halves that moved opposite ways). Every time you had (out of warranty) repairs by Dyson, they would then warranty the whole machine for a year. We had a few issues with controller circuit boards, which they came and replaced. One visit, they reprogrammed the machine and removed the twisting drum action, so it then operated like any other normal front loading washing machine. This was because they found it was causing excessive wear and they no longer made the drums. It was annoying to lose the main USP of the machine, but it did mean we had a machine that would last longer and we probably had a few years more life out of the machine.
      Tesla are doing exactly the same. I'd rather long term life/reliability, but then my Tesla is out of warranty, so that is more important to me. My compensation I suppose, is the free supercharging. Other manufacturers wouldn't be so proactive and just leave you in the lurch.
      But if your Tesla is still within the warranty period, I can see why you feel different about this.

    My P85 MS owned from new now 130,000 UK miles did fry its battery at 75,000 miles due to a long term un diagnosed coolent leak, on v hot day at 70 mph officer it reported oveheat and went into a 60 mph snail mode. It didnt let me down, got home, on my PC was an email from Freemont 2am their time saying "we have detected a battery fault, arranged a replacement please call ......." New battery fitted 2 days later, leak diagnosed as 4 way valve under the frunk and it came with slower charge rate. Most of my charging is done from my solar at about 20 miles a day in the car which is at 5 Amps my battery should last forever! Any road trip I free supercharge so Im pleased Tesla have been proactive and it babies my battery, super cheap to run high performance car 0-60 4 seconds good to me.

      @@GoGreenAutos Yea it shocked me, clearly they were monitoring cars from day 1. Servic had reported "we have topped up the coolent" I always said "if it needs topping up wheres it going?" but unfortunately there was not a lot of co ordination in service in the very early days which to be honest I expected and figured I know my way round cars and electrics so worth a punt. In 2015 no one could figure how such a big good looking car had no engine let alone how fast it was, perception has changed, now near 10 years from UK launch time passing forces more and more acceptance these old Teslas keep on going. Chester Team said they will keep all the "classics" running and if faced with a modification need it will develope it. I had a TPMS ECU give up and was told "we dont do that one anymore" I thought ok here we go ill have to sort it but they said give us the car for up to 10 days we will provide a free loaner an we will develop sub harness and software to take the latest ECU/Dash display, you just pay for the parts. My claim to fame that mod was developed on my car and now is distributed through the rest of the world for other classic owners as is Tesla policy......surprised I was for sure, just makes me want to keep my classic P85.

      The reversing lights on my MS are next to useless. But I assumed because they only have reversing LEDs in one lamp cluster. I've not considered if they are dimmer than when new. I've looked up the parts (at epc.tesla.com/) and you can only buy the complete light assembly.

    • @GoGreenAutos
      @GoGreenAutos  2 роки тому +2

      You can't. Firstly, you can't charge a Zoe on DC current, unless it is a ZE50 with CCS. All other Zoes are AC charging only. Secondly, these CCS adaptors are for Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles only and the adaptor is only half of it as there is also a ECU fitted under the seat to make it work.

    • @GoGreenAutos
      @GoGreenAutos  2 роки тому

      Yes it has, but charging rates haven't changed. The new pack is a "remanufactured" pack and from what I understand, its just a circuit board that fails in these original 85kWh packs (probably in the BMS), so while its a new pack to me, the actual cells wouldn't be new and could even me worse than my original. Since it was changed, there's absolutely no difference in charging, range etc. I've just rapid charged again today from 17%-80% and it took 1 hour 2 mins - because I ended up paying for parking as was over an hour, which cost me £2.20 (at Oxford charging hub).
