- From www.crosstraini... Many of us hate riding in the rain, but often this is because we think we are going to crash, aren't wearing the right gear, or haven't set up our bike properly. Here are a few wet weather riding techniques that hopefully will have you singing in the rain, along with wet weather riding gear and bike setup when it's raining.
WET WEATHER RIDING TECHNIQUE
Slow down. That's a no brainer. On sealed roads, remember the first 15 minutes is the most dangerous time as all that dried oil and muck on the road is washed away. Ride in the car tracks, not between them where you will find the most engine oil dropped on the road.
Ride in a higher gear for better traction and smoother control of the bike. Avoid anything shiny like man hole covers, rail way tracks, bolts in timber bridges. Don't turn and brake at the same time, just do one thing at a time. And if you aren't sure how grippy a surface is, try quickly locking up the rear wheel for a traction test.
WET WEATHER RIDING GEAR
Wet weather jackets and pants? Staying dry makes a huge difference to how much you'll enjoy wet weather riding. Starting with waterproof jackets and pants, the most expensive option is Goretex like the Klim Badlands gear. It's completely waterproof, breathable and perfect if you have the cash.
Next is a quality one piece rain suit like the Won-Z we use, see our review here: • Video It's quick to pull on and off while wearing your boots and extremely visible to drivers. Visit their website here: www.jacksonraci...
Next are shower-proof jackets like this cheap one I bought from Aldi. These are great if you expect only light or infrequent showers as they will stay dry for about an hour before the damp starts coming through. Next is the inner liner option like this one on my Klim Induction Jacket. These are handy if you really aren't expecting rain but might be caught out. You wouldn't use this if it rains a lot as they aren't breathable and let the outer jacket get heavy with water which also will cause a chill factor in cool wet weather. Last is the budget option of cheap rain coats and pants. They tear easily, often leak after a few hours, and you usually have to take your boots off to get those pants on. Most of us move on from this budget option pretty quickly.
Helmets. Apply some silicon grease to the rubber seal for your visor to keep it in good shape. There are lots of anti-fogging solutions for your visor, a good budget option is applying some soap suds then simply polish off with a soft cloth.
Boots. The more you spend, generally the more waterproof they will be. If it's wet all the time, there are expensive goretex boots available.
The same situation with gloves, get some goretex gloves if you can rob a local bank to get the funds needed.
WET WEATHER BIKE SETUP
A good fairing or wind shield goes a long way to keeping some of the rain off your body at speed, and reducing the chill factor in cold weather. Heated grips are also regarded as a must by many in cold climates, regardless of whether its raining or not. If it rains a lot, consider choosing softer compound tyres that will grip on sealed roads better. The general consensus is don't reduce your air pressures for sealed roads, but drop the air pressures for dirt roads in wet weather.
Most decent luggage options will be waterproof. Even cheap ones like my Third Gear throw over bag have a waterproof cover you can drag over when it rains. If you are on a really tight budget, these dry bags available from camping stores work quite well too.
So that's a very quick summary, always keen to hear on some extra tips which I can include here to keep you singing in the rain....

When riding in the rain, make sure that you don't have any skin visible, especially around your face. Getting wet is annoying, but getting stung by a thousand drop of water traveling at a 100kph is unbearable. A good balaclava protect really well against this and some redirect your breath away from your visor, witch reduce fogging. Personally, I suggest the Klim. They are expensive but you use them once, then you never go back to the cheap one.
Good tip, Cedric. That stinging starts pretty early in my experience... even 50kmh is unpleasant!
It was worth staying until the end for that amazing singing! :D
lol i wanted to use the old movie footage but shied away from the copyright issues....
youtube can't detect video\music less than 15sec
I used to love my old DR650 as an all weather bike, in hindsight I should have never sold it!
Buying motorcycle gear from Aldi 😂 I like to live dangerously but that's a whole new level
Back in the 90's I used to wear my snowboard pants👍🏻
I beg to differ about the wheel tracks. On roads that aren't frequently maintained the chip is worn down and the wheel tracks are slick and dangerous. The chip in between is sharper and bites into tyres better, and doesn't hold the water. That's one piece of advice people repeat that I think will get people killed.
Pinlocks. Pinlocks. Did I mention Pinlocks? They are the ONLY thing that effectively eliminate visor fogging in cold, wet weather. I've been riding to work in Vancouver year round for many years (lets just say I have some familiarity with rain LOL), and have tried most of the "miracle" products. In short, they're shit. Invest in a good helmet that will allow a pinlock visor (Pro tip - the Shoei RF1200 comes with one as standard :).
tip ziplock bag for your ph
Don't get an Arai XD-4 unless you're prepared to spend the extra $100 or so for the pinlock visor. That helmet fogs badly.
I have improvised and overcome on more than one occasion with saran wrap. Semper Fi.
when off the bike don't leave helmet in helmet lock for 5 hours of rain like I did when I was working construction and forgot my helmet was upside down
In my experience gore-tex is overpriced and overrated, many other new liners do well i wet condition plus and after a few hours in rain even gore-tex gets wet.
GOOD Advisable gear 4 wet weather riding, Liked your singing, Be Happy.
For the road, pinlock changed my life. No fogging, no matter what. Had mine for about 4 years now, still good as new. A month and 10 000 km in New Zealand tested it out. Riding through snow, rain and hail with no fogging. Even when stopped with the visor down in freezing conditions.
Vision annoys me more than anything. I don't always have a shield, sometimes goggles. Haven't tried soap though.
my 3rd gear rain cover doesn't fit the luggage... waist of time having it... I use roll tops and garbage bags inside it to try lip stuff dry. it's a shame as so far other than that I have been happy with the 3gear throw over bag. good video, keep me coming.
Zip lock bags, nitrile gloves & macgyver tap. Can't go wrong...
Gortex boot liners , they last a long time if you only use them when it's wet. Had mine for 10 years now :-)
I moved to a place where it doesn't rain - problem solved! Great videos! Much appreciated
singing in the rain - lol ;)
that was very enjoyable to watch, keep making them
What Brand is that 'onesy' one piece rain suit PLEASE? Would you recommend it?
Thank VERY Much.
Regards.

Thank you for replying 'AO'. I do Appreciate it.
I will look it up n check it out. (I hope I can find it!)
You have G8 video's.
Sincere regards.

VERY sorry, couldn't find it. I went up n down, n up n down, etc and could not find it.
I did look at a few, but they were not the one.
Can you recall what the video was called?
If not, that's OK.
Thank you.
Regards.
hi terry, took me ages to find it too! just realised it's currently unlisted because last time i used it there were big leaks, something that shouldn't happen given how expensive it was. i still haven't chased them up about this yet.... ua-cam.com/video/CjoKPm4kCi8/v-deo.html
GoreTex gloves and heated grips are a bad combo once there water on the grip or on the glove.
Aerostich. I recently did 3000km in the rain and stayed totally dry.
Thought it said police haha
What is a sealed road? I think I'm having a jargon issue, is it any paved road, or do you mean specifically asphalt or concrete?, Those of course both perform vastly different in rain, concrete sucks, asphalt is much better. just curious :) great video with tips, these techniques have saved my butt more than a few times.
yep. here we just say bitumen which nobody outside of australia seems to understand lol
Living in the PNW in Washington state, it is wet all the damn time =[
here's mine; when riding through a town, keep your brakes, clutch, and horn covered. if someone starts to pull out you are 100% ready to beep the horn, which has about an 80% success rate for me at stopping people before they get the full way in to the road, and i can just slow down and casually ride past them. the other 20% of the time if they stop in the middle of the road, your brakes and everything are covered to immediately start emergency braking. and, if the worst happens and you are going to t-bone them, you can avoid a surprising amount of injury *(assuming you have all your gear on) if you hop off of the bike just before crashing, even if you're only going 12 mph (20 mk/h) like i was when i broke my wrist. if i had jumped when i hit someone who pulled out on me i would have landed on their hood and rolled off the far side, only getting a few bruises, instead ofand breaking my wrist before going OTB
also, if you are on a very tight budget for waterproofing, simply cover your jacket in strips of duct tape. it will serve to cut off 100% of your airflow, make you sweat, and show off your true gumby style
polite!
very!
love seeing these pop up on my feed. Thanks mate.
I do think you way overstate the value of gore Tex . First gear for instance makes very effectively waterproof gear. It's the same tech as gore Tex they just don't pay for the branding. $300 first gear jacket is waterproof to the outershell all day
any chance you'd have a link if other viewers wanted to have a look?
Sure. I dont know if you have these guys in Australia but in the US its a pretty pervasive brand firstgear-usa.com/mens-gear/jackets.html . Everide has talked about a jacket at an even lower price point i think it was called battleborn .
another great video
hi, do u have the link to purchase the onezy rain coat?
no but there was a link our review at the end which does have the link
Great tips! Whats the one piece suit you showed?
there was a link to it in the vid, here it is again ua-cam.com/video/CjoKPm4kCi8/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video, do you have a link for the windscreen you have on your bike?
covered in our DR650 adventure bike series, daniel
Cheers.
im taping umbrella fabric to my jacket, yolo
