  • Don't make deadly mistakes when feeding round bales of hay to goats. Watch this video and learn some of the do's and don'ts. Feeding round bales of hay to goats is a great way to keep a good amount of feed out for a longer duration, just be cautious. This is a mix of lespedeza, bermuda and fescue hay.

When I began watching your videos several months ago, you would say, "bale" and I would think you said, "bell." (I'm a Northerner, my ears hear with a Northern accent, lol.) Live your videos, great family and farm, such blessings!

I love your new hay cradle feeder. So many can eat from all sides. I buy the square bales of hay for my goats but don't put the whole bales out for them, afraid they would eat themselves to death! It is nice you can put a bale outdoors and not have to worry about it getting moldy.

Hi guys, that's interesting about the weed.
We have a weed that the Sheep eat.
My old place had more of it than Grass.
They raised sheep on that mountain because there were so many rocks.
As we spoke about before they built stone wall pasture dividers and boundary lines.

Thanks for warning about the netting and the danger of collapse re: the round bales! I have a goat who loves to crawl into things -- we had to cut her out of a roll of old fencing the other day. She would be a prime candidate for getting squished in the middle of one of those big bales. I feed my goats high-quality alfalfa with a side of grass hay pellets for nutritional diversity. This combo provides enough protein so that I don't have to feed any grain. I also provide free-choice baking soda and Manna Pro vitamin and mineral supplement for goats. It contains ammonium chloride to guard against urinary calculli in bucks and wethers.

    Just in case you're interested:
Living Traditions Homestead built a cover for their holder. It's pretty much like yours. Maybe bigger. Anyway, they used a cattle panel I believe it was to create a dome. They have a removable side so they can just slip the bale in though. They feed a cow and several goats with the bale.

Love the serecia Lezpedeza. I feed it as well. It's in the legume family like alfalfa. Mine tested at 13.8% this year. It's the high tannins that work as a vermafuge. My goats love it.

I think all your goats are beautiful . The Spanish and Keiko heard is great together I think . Bet they are definitely a strong herd. The others are cute for what they are. Do they seem to require more attention? Your goats are beautiful. I enjoy watching them . Glad Mojo is turnings out to be a good gaurdian . Neat how he sleeps on the porch then jumping over the fence to his goats.

Fabricate a cage to fit over the top of the hay cradels that is either hinged or removeable to keep the goats from climbing on the bales.

Maybe you should have Patented that design and started selling them. Even if you have someone weld them together you would still make some money on each sale. I like that design. It would work good for cows and horses too. Then again, anyone that needs one could probably build one themselves.

YES, that netting is a danger if left on the bales and in the field. I knew a horse person who left the netting on. It was a PAIN to clean it out after the thaw. It wasn't a tangle issue so much for the larger horses, but young ones and little ones can get tangled in it, not to mention chickens as well. I have rescued my fair share of chickens and other small livestock from a tangled mess of baling twine and bale netting.
I am getting geared up to get my first goats. I will probably be building a hay feeder for them. I am not to where I need to be putting round bales out just yet.

My goats prefer weeds to hay, they're browsers and if the weeds are growing, they go after the weeds and I have a lot of weeds here. My horses eat the round bales. I don't have any feeders and they knock the bale to pieces, roll and poop in it. I need a feeder, but don't have the money to buy one!

Would a tarp covering the hay keep the goats from messing on top of the hay?
Or would the goats chew on the tarp?
I really enjoy your videos!! You have a beautiful farm!!
