- Welcome back! In today's video, I take you along for a week of spending during my sabbatical, as I transition from a material girl to a budget-savvy lifestyle in the high-cost living city of NYC and Jersey City. I also share how I save money and still enjoy life in these pricey locations!

Thanks for watching! Let me know what videos you want to see from me :)
I asked a question in your previous video and you didnt answer, so I will ask again. You said you couldnt take a trip to Lagos during your sabbatical. So I was wonder, since you are Nigerian...why cant you take a trip to Lagos? Don you have family members there? I am just ..please explain..
you are not "partners" anymore 😊 - I saw Casey's video
Would be so cool to understand how you decided how much money to put away for the sabbatical and what money you won’t touch. Would also love to learn how you go about getting the money you got from stocks at Google if that’s a thing? Or a 401K?
@@christopherreed3019 She didn't answer your comment. Bye 👋
Where did you get the wig? It's pretty.
Taking a sabbatical when you have a safety net over your head as you have a partner who is no doubt sharing the rent and utility costs is a huge plus.
Whewww🙂
This
Yes and this is the part many conveniently leave out.
Not to mention income from UA-cam
@@Kenya1984 Having a partner is a major safety net. That's it.
Bukola, I love how real you are! I took a sabbatical a couple years ago and I definitely was not as kind to its ups and downs as you are. The biggest thing I struggled with back then was my self-worth, I often questioned who I was without my work. I like that you have gone into this sabbatical with a plan, and that you have an acceptance mindset towards the changes that it brings. I wish this video had existed back when I was taking my sabbatical, it would've been a good motivator (even if the sabbatical was my choice) Looking forward to more such videos! I love your clothing choices (especially the black top in this video), could you make a video about your favorite pieces and how you style them?
Yes, girl, NY is expensive. I'm happy you followed your heart. I'm actually dealing with the same dilemma of playing it safe or going for it.
It really is 😭
Leave NYC whenever you decide to stop working, I wish I did. My rent ate up most of my savings.
More unemployment chronicles, please‼️
Yes more coming up!
@@Bukola1 can’t wait!🙂
Yes please!
Yes, please. I enjoyed this video!!!!
Love the transparency! I think it’s important to have this level of openness. Thank you!
Your mental health and peace is a priority right now in your life! Don’t listen to the haters! Life is too short and yes, it’s risky to not have a paycheck coming in every two weeks! But you did pre-plan this sabbatical and set financial goals in advance to make this possible! You can ALWAYS make money, but if you don’t take time to improve your quality of life and create your own peaceful environment & goals, then it’s worth it! No regrets, no looking back! Money will always be out there people, but you can lose your mind if you don’t maintain a healthy lifestyle & your mental health! God bless and continue to ignore the negative naysayers who are envious and feel better transferring their fears and doubts on you! Proud of you! Keep doing you! Cut off the noise and block any distractions if they try to hinder you from meeting your end goals! God bless you bukola ! 😊❤️🙏🏾
Love this comment. For real.
Great content...your face at timestamp 14:17 when you said "and the charger" had me laughing. You'll never forget your charger again! I can't wait to watch and learn from you on this sabbatical.
@1:55
in the name of not making things complicated your friend should've just paid the whole bill since u only had a coffee instead of you both using your cards to split the bill.
Great video and congrats on your sabbatical!
Loved this! Looking forward to your upcoming videos ❤ please take good care of your self during your sabbatical
Looking forward to more interesting vlogs! You quit your job before and things turned out great afterwards. Enjoy your sabbatical 🎉🎉and cheers to new adventures 🎉🎉🎉🥰
I love the idea of the walking groups I'll try it one day! Thanks for the video Bukola!
It was actually fun and a good way to meet people! Thanks for commenting ❤❤❤
Your videos are always great to watch ❤so enjoyable and I love how you're well spoken
i personally can’t believe people wonder what someone would do with their free time not spent at a job…like…some people have actual hobbies that fulfil them. my hobbies and just personal time to work on myself (which is a forever journey) filled my days when i took a sabbatical. i have never lived to work i work to live period. i would gladly retire right now if i could and have a fulfilling life.
I’ve been following you ever since I was preparing my own SWE journey career transition into a coding bootcamp. Love your content, please keep creating!
It’s the fact anyone can relate to you that makes me fall for you! Love you! Thank you so much for your journey!
Nice video 📹
So happy for you!! Plus you make money being a content creator…at least you have no kids..I had to take time off for my son, three years old… I understand using savings and sticking to a budget.. but also your content and the time I’ve been giving I’m completing data analyst certificate courses…and python and sql..soooo thanks!!!! Enjoy your time off it will all work out!!!
Excited to watch your upcoming content!
This is 4 Sure Gonna b so Insightful🔥🔥🔥👍n Happy Sunday😀….
You are so real! I enjoy so much all of your videos. :)
First time seeing your vlog….good stuff! Thanks for making these videos. Now I’m a new subscriber.
Yes, keep the videos coming!
Good luck on your journey! Follow your passion
A day-in-the-life that is not focused on work is actually freaking iconic! Thank you offering such transparency and insight.
*Also, total side-note, right before I left my fantastic trainer (because after like six months I couldn’t afford it anymore) she offered me a discount to help me stay long. At that point I couldn’t take it because I was already in the red, but if I had known early I would have stayed.
I’m not sure if all trainers do that right before you leave, or if it was just that she’s very cool people, but perhaps your trainer/s offer a discount to help you stay longer.
Nice video 📹
taking a year sabbatical seems so nice! Don't ever feel guilty for it either, you earned it and look happy!
Awesome vlog! Keep setting those PRs! 💪
You look rested & refreshed already!
such a beautiful vlog😍 would love to see more vlogs!
This was so fun to watch
Bukola, I would love to see more beauty content from you too! I love everything you put out but I’m soo interested in your skincare/haircare/maintenance…you’re gorgeous but in a really minimalist way it seems
I like how you invest in yourself! Inspirational
Thank you! It is really important to invest in your Health and Fitness :)
I know employed people who can’t afford to do most of the stuff in this video.
Congratulations! Wish you guys all the best!Just saw Casey's video right after watching your video!
Thank you! We were planning to annonce it a lot later when we had our pictures back but guess the cats out the bag lol
Saw Casey’s video too! Congratulations!🎉
Love this Funemployed content!!!
Awesome! More too come
Omg I love Choc O Pain!!! 8:49 My fiancé and I always get their fresh bread too and it’s so good 😊 Love the walking group idea since I also live in JC (near the boardwalk on Newport) and would love to join one!! Also your recipe ideas look so yummy 🤤 I make my overnight oats almost identically to you except I also add a teaspoon of vanilla ❤
ooouuu i'm gonna be interning in NY this summer!! I have heard of the Seated app, will definitely be looking into that bc NY just has restaurants everywhere!!
I'm proud of you for staying true to yourself #Inspiring
Bukola, I can relate so much right now. I resigned my corporate job working as an Marketing Coordinator for a few Orthodontic clinics… it just felt time to go. Although I miss the paychecks and I am living life through my savings ( obvi being frugal and budget friendly ) I haven’t felt more alive. I am focusing on content creating as well. I’ve always did cc as a hobby since I was in middle school… it’s something that never left me so this year I took it more seriously through UA-cam and IG. Cheers to you and wishing you nothing but the best! I am loving this series keep them coming! 🤍
Yes, hun! Teach me your meal prep. Recipes in description 😂
Morning routines …ootd when you go on date nights…. Spend the day with me… meal prep …
Girl you ballin 🤩. and I'm here for it!
not right now lol but I claim that energy!
Thanks for your honest vlog and detailing all of your weekly expenses. NYC is expense. However, you should also consider posting your recipes on Pinterest and doing another blog because you're meal prep has an audience.
Thanks for the kind comment! And really, I never thought people would be interested in my cooking... interesting 🤔
Hey Carla!! I recognize you from boxing vids!👋🏿👋🏿
I've just started an unplanned sabbatical and I'm focusing on my projects again! I'm missing 6 months out of my internship and looking to make that up with paid roles won't be easy but will all me to spend less of my savings in general.
Best wishes to your journey
It’s never to early and never to late to invest in personal well-being and self growth learning etc.
I love your regular week vlogs or spend week vlogs 😊
I love the way you edit
I would love to hear more about this trip to Rome and how you met that group of friends 😊
I see a fully relaxed Bukola.. 🙂.. . For real, you were really going through a burnout.
Could you cover more on how to prevent burnout in software engineer/office jobs?
I love your videos!
Wow, congrats on the sabbatical! Life has to be so much more than working every single weekday of our lives, it’s important to enjoy, decompress and rest.
Could you do a video called “budget hacks for living in NYC?” or tips and tricks for someone who is unemployed but still wants to have fun in the city?
Love that your partner is considerate
I love that your unemployment journey is defying people's expectations based on the comments.
People think you should be super frugal and suffering and you are not. Thank for reminding me:
That there is a life outside of my job
Planned sabbaticals are a gift and not being fixated on money and investing in self-care is just as important as a 9 to 5.
And finally, we are more than our productivity. Even if you did nothing for 6 months, I Stan in your investment.
I hope that you keep you protect your good energy amidst all the questions from people who do not walk in your shoes and HAVE FUN! 🎉
😊
As a 45 year old woman, born and raised in bushwick bklyn now living in queens I agree with you this is very expensive for one person for one week. For one person 1/4 of that spending amount is decent. I agree with you the personal training sessions should be cut out. You can still get a great workout with free videos. And definitely walk to the supermarket and get those sales. If you’re trying to get out of debt or maximum the spending of your savings, Dave Ramsey says you shouldn’t see the inside of a restaurant unless your working there.
Love your content ..So fun to watch …❤️
Thanks so much!!
We are here to learn again.
Thanks for your support!
Nice video 📹
When I first moved to NYC I had $60 and had my 1st month of rent paid, that’s all! I learned that NYC is a great place to be broke. I did eat a lot of bread, but I also went to art shows and all kinds of free sites. I always bought the monthly pass for the subway 1st thing after rent, this way I could go literally any place in the 5 Boros. (That’s going away soon). If you have to be really broke for some time I think it’s a fine place to do it.
Love this for you! I know how stressful Tech is so you taking this sabbatical is needed. I’m 8 months into my “Funemployment” and trusting in God🧘🏾♀️
Love these kind of vlogs in NYC and about finance
Me too! Planning to make more content like this
I loveee claw daddy’s 😌💅🏾
Great video!!!
Bukola, Congrats on your recent marriage! I saw you and your hubby in Casey's video.
Omg she got married??? Aww that’s lovely
I feel for you younger folks. The Landlords and Merchants are killing us with over pricing. In 1992 I got out of the Marines and rented an apartment for 600 per month. I`m still there, but now I have to pay 2000 per month for the same place. I`m about to take my social security but it looks like I may have to keep working too until I drop dead.
I went to ovenly a few times in summer only to find a fly is always flying above the breads
Awesome content! - from Hong Kong
Excellent content!
Wow, NY is so expensive, but such an exicting lifestyle, just found your channel and love these videos.
Thank you so much!
Good job ! Keep going🤗
Thank you ❤❤
take as much time to rest, dont do anything if you dont want haha. i am also planning for my sabbatical.
I quit my job at PwC to work on my cpa test and to take care of my heath, and I am two months in and ive done so much and don't miss my old job. I was lucky because I had two years salary saved up and I realized I need time for me and corporate wold will not give you that.
You need the Amex green. 3x points on Uber and Subway. Pair it with a Charles schwab platinum for 1 cent per point into a brokerage.
Crossaint in 5th Ave is nearly 4 to 6 dollars and they aren't even bigger than your hand! I can find one twice as big for less than half!
That pasta you made looks delicious! You should do a recipe video or post the recipe.
Would also love to learn about how you decided which places to travel to:) maybe after you post the content for safety reasons. But I’d be so cool to hear your thoughts :-)
Sending love and support, Bukola
Thank you!
I would love your recipe for the curry chicken salad.
Yes, no problem this is where the recipe is from: therealfooddietitians.com/curry-chicken-salad/
I made a few modifications!
Nice video 📹
You are self-employed!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yes technically 🤷🏿♀️
Nice video 📹
For your grocery delivery, do you add replacement options so you dont get refunded?
Happy Married Life ❤️
Id would like to know where you started off and how you saved your money before hand? I live in Regina SK with costs high but not like NYC thanks love the channel
Hope they have security controls in place for the portable chargers
Congrats on everything happening in your life! I saw you in Casey Neistat’s recent UA-cam video.
Hi Bukola i noticed that you measure your smoothie on the kitchen scale? your scale counts calories ? Thx!
That Pasta you made look really good!! where do you usually get your recipes I’m trying to start cooking myself❤
Thank you! I really like Make it Dairy Free cooking blog, that's where I got this recipe: makeitdairyfree.com/vegan-vodka-sauce-penne-alla-vodka/
My phone came with a charger and when I lost it, they said, "Sure you can buy this one. It's 40 dollars". And I had to buy it because I needed it. Sometimes I take my charger with me, but sometimes I am like no, you can stay home, where you are completely safe. So I understand your dilemma. If you were not expecting any important calls, I would have just waited to charge until I got home.
Wow thanks 🙏
I am really happy for you that you have decided to do this to refresh and recharge, but technically you are on a hiatus, because when you take a sabbatical someone pays you.
Nice to have a safety net.
The transport is awesome. Hopefully your passion projects start generating income so you can continue the sabbatical. Your burn amount seems high.
Your expenses are 80%+ of mine and I'm caring for a family size, and I'm not chopping my expenses in half since they are shared with my partner.
Definitely confident you'll adjust and adapt, since the toughest part is already out of the way; which is knowing and tracking your finances and goals.
I was having trouble sleeping. Thanks this video sorted me out!
Nice video, Im in the personal finance business and love your money habits. But, I was wondering how you're managing the huge costs for your beautiful hair, eyebrows, skincare and nails?
Could you do a video about starting a UA-cam channel? And your journey? 😊
Absolutely love this video. Can I ask what camera you’re using?
Thank you! I used both the sony a7c and the sony z-v1
$120 for a PT that’s unbelievable, good that you are prioritising your health.
Mind if I ask how much you saved up/budgeted for your sabbatical? Could you do a video on how to prepare/budget for one?
I made a video here: how I planned financially

@@Bukola1 thank you! Must have missed this but am watching it now!
Ali abdaal took this route & he has been speaking about the great fulfillment after quitting his Physician roles...
Ali Abdaal is goals! He's really a huge inspiration to me
