The Tales of Beatrix Potter was filmed in 1971, choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton. He played Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, the hedgehog and the cast included Wayne Sleep and Lesley Collier. I went to see it at the cinema and I was entranced.
3:33 That's the Beatrix Potter ballet! I had it on VHS and watched it over and over as a child. I can't believe you don't know it? Although, Beatrix Potter is VERY British, so it may not have made it across the pond to you really? Anyway, you should give it a watch, there's so many awesome moments and the costumes are brilliant. Check out Jemima Puddle-Duck's yellow ballet slippers for a start! 😍 Gorgeous! Big love from Manchester UK xXx
The sisters were Claudia Dean and her sister. Claudia is a popular well-known Australian dancer with her own UA-cam channel and business. She used to be in the Royal Ballet but teaches ballet now. She's great!
My evaluation from my ballet class came in 2 days ago saying, “I can tell she jet glued her pointe shoes”. All I did for the last 2 weeks of classes was Jet Gluing
The animal ballet is the Beatrix Potter ballets. Jeremy Fisher's ballet is amazing. My old ballet teacher used to have 3 of the original mice heads because he was one of the choreographers. X❤
I recognise the dance clip with the animals from the tales Beatrix Potter here in Sweden it’s shown on tv around Christmas and New Years every year, as mentioned you can find it on dvd. If you search on UA-cam you can find more clips from the movie and when it was performed in theatre.
I was watching this with my friend who dances with San Francisco ballet and she causally says “oh yah she fitted me for my first pair of point shoes I can send you a pic” SO CASUALLY like Josephine is my favorite person on earth and now I am trying to edit myself in
That little girl dragging herself across the floor during ballet class was exactly what I was like when I did ballet as a kiddo. I got kicked out lmaooooo
1:12 I am so excited that you had JJ in this video! As far as I know, he doesn't do ballet (He's an actor on Broadway. You might recognize him from Book of Mormon!), so I wasn't expecting to see him!
The "animals" dancing are from the ballet, Tales of Beatrix Potter, (she was an author and brilliant illustrator of books for children). Choreography by Frederick Ashton.
No offense, but that’s something only a white person could/would say. ‘European Pink’ looks pretty dang close to the color of most white peoples’ feet. A whole lot closer than to the color of someone who’s Black or of Latin or Native American descent.
As a black person I agree. I think the equivalent for black or darker skinned people would be tights and shoes in various shades of mauve or a dusty rose colour. Because the whole point of pink shoes was because it was indecent for women back in the day to show skin, and they made the tights and shoes pink so they don't look like they have bare legs.
I'm Greek and considered white and i can definitely tell you that satin pink is not a skin tone, it's just a pretty color. Stop trying to prove to people that everything people do is racist. Ballet tights have NEVER matched my skin tone amd they were never supposed to do so, because it was considered not modest back in the day.
Pink pointe shoes don’t exclude darker skinned dancers. They are like that to be a contrast and specifically NOT a skin tone! No one’s skin tone is pink! For some modern ballets now they have shoes that match the dancers skin tone, but I think that pink pointe shoes look beautiful on all skin tones.
You should see the on of her where she cries because of the pointe shoe emoji cos it’s pink and there isn’t multiple skin tones lol it’s honestly crazy
It’s supposed to match tights. Tights back then they would rather have baby pink rather than nude. So it does look like the dancer is indeed wearing tights. And the shoes had to match for a nice seamless line!
The animal ballet is the movie Tales of Beatrix Potter. It really lovely If you know the stories. When my daughters did ballet I made the Mrs Tiggywinkle just like the movie
The European pink does not exclude darker toned skin. They exclude all the skin. Have you ever seen someone having the pointshoe colour as skin? I am white...as in snow white...but the shoes look barbiedoll pink on me....most "nude" coloured clothes are positively brown/beige compaired to mine while they are ment to be cocaision skintoned. As far as i know most pointshoes come in all skintones.
60’s 70’s 80’s no toe pads - maybe bandaids or lambswool, and point shoes with a point platform which was really more aesthetically appealing and true extension of the extremity.
Dear Josephine, The little girl who was sliding along the floor has the advantage of being very light, she's hardly pulling any weight at all, and that is why she's able to do that glide over the floor in that manner. It's the same thing for a kitten when it's so tiny and it can scale up your leg or up the curtains, because it is not hauling very much weight. It's light as a feather and the claws, or in the case of the girl, her sweaty hands, are enough to support the movement. In both of the movements, the energy is in the pulling. I really enjoy the information I get from your videos. It's great in the way that word of mouth is invaluable for people who are somewhat already "in-the-know" as they say. There Is only one criticism I have and I hope that you'll take this and understand it to be constructive criticism and nothing more. I've puzzled over how to say this without it getting misconstrued, but I think that the best thing to do is just to be straightforward and honest so I'll continue. You have a lovely voice and you've been blessed with one that is lower, richer and deep and your voice reminds me of the warm and smooth sounds that a cello makes when a master of the instrument plays it!! Nothing can be as awful as a high, strident, shrieky and very nasal voice. You've been gifted to have such a richly toned voice!! Having said this, however, these beautiful qualities disappear when that vocal fry kicks in. It's like your voice is a dancer until it's beaten up by vocal fry, the ugly bully who comes along and squishes and beats out every last drop of beauty that your voice had remaining and stomps out, looking for its next victim. Do you think that this is something that you can recognize and overcome? Do you think that you would want to?? And if your answer is "yes", can you do this by yourself or do you think that you will need a vocal coach? Are you open to the idea of getting rid of the v.f. ? I would love to hear your beautiful voice without the vocal problem that I believe it to be. I don't know what the long-term effects of making that raspy, gravelly sound will be. God forbid that one ends up with permanent damage as in the case of laryngeal nodules or worse. I think it's too early to tell, it is fairly new as a type of vocal "production", in historic terms, as is the history of the recorded voice. Although recording has been around for something like a hundred years, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the other arts and the history thereof, on which we are fortunate to have vast knowledge. I perceive vocal fry to be a new way of using the voice, and it is not, in any way an attractive one. It is my hope that you understand what I mean and that you are not averse to change, to evolve, and to mature into featuring your lovely, rich, voice in the same way that you present everything else that you do and every other beautiful part of your being. I have studied classical voice in university and I know that sometimes it's not easy to take criticism even when it is called "constructive", so I ask you please, do not take offense. The last thing I want is to be hurtful. In fact, it doesn't even register as any sort of thing that I would ever want!! I am hopeful that you take my comments for what they are, and nothing more. They are meant to perhaps bring this matter to your attention with the hope that you can use the thought as something on which you can improve, to be a means of making yourself even more amazing than you are already. The key to presenting one other gift you have been born with. I mean it for the best for you, the diamond, to have another sparking facet to show your admirers in the world. Thank You. Thank you, Josephine, for your time, I tried to be as brief as possible, yet I know I failed here in doing so! I should mention that there are many people who somehow ended up with the habit of vocal fry, some on youtube, some overheard, and some directly in my life, and so it's not a rare thing in any way. And please don't feel that I'm addressing you exclusively, I hope everyone examines their presence in all ways so that we all can be aware of how we come across. I'm looking at you 👀!! other people reading this... (lol) So, Everyone, Be Well!! Take good care of your health!!! It's Priceless!!! And, though it's not always easy, be as happy as you can!!! My wish is that at least two people will try to lose the fry!!!😊
PINK matches no one's skin. There are now perfectly easy dyes for coloring pointe shoes all sorts of colors. I have no doubt that skintones (which are ALL shades of brown) are being included now, too. That is perfectly enough for me. Shoemakers do enough work as it is. They don't need to dye their satin and be extra mindful that they don't make too much of one tone shoe each week. Let the students dye their shoes. It's fine. AND more accurate.
Since pointe shoes are all handmade, I don't see why it is a big deal to order them in a particular color, be it one's own skin color, red or plaid for Godsake. I wonder if the shoe companies are resisting this because they think all those special orders would be too much trouble. I think every dancer who puts in enough effort to be on pointe deserves shoes to match her skin.
I am here admiring this all as a musician. Do I dare ask what "Jet Glue" actually is? Because it sounds frightening, and this comes from someone who has calluses on her fingers from piano and guitar.
I love Misty Copeland!!!! And yeah, that must have been a bit ago- I've been seeing true skin tones in the last year or two! I would love to learn ballet!
I have almost never seen anybody who's pink unless they're a little sunburn. I think they call it European Pink because that's what. It's been called for a very long time. I understand inclusivity is a real issue. I'm glad black countries are all inclusive and don't name things based on anything within their countries. There are so many wealthy successful people of color. It's a shame that many of them overlook creating for other people of color. I remember seeing a commercial a few years agowhere someone was saying that there wasn't different shades of nude color undergarments for all people. That was really confusing to me because I remember that encountering a range of shades. From light to dark throughout my younger years decades ago. Even at walmart. Having said that they didn't have a shade for me. But I guess the narrative is always going to be that it never existed even though there are those of us who know that it did and does, has and always will be.

The animal ballet is the Beatrix Potter ballets. Jeremy Fisher's ballet is amazing. My old ballet teacher used to have 3 of the original mice heads because he was one of the choreographers. X❤
They were made for TV only I believe. X
choreography is by Fred Ashton, maybe your teacher was a performer or rehearsal director?
@clarelear129 he was probably a rehearsal director. He was too old to be a dancer at that time. Lol.
Made in 1971. I watched this as a child. I loved it.
@Spiklething yeah. He was too old to be an actual dancer, then.

The "animals" dancing are from the ballet, Tales of Beatrix Potter, (she was an author and brilliant illustrator of books for children). Choreography by Frederick Ashton.
To be honest, most white dancers don't have a skin shade anywhere close to 'European pink' either... so basically no one gets shoes in their shade...
Eh, I think it is much worse for nonwhite dancers.
No offense, but that’s something only a white person could/would say. ‘European Pink’ looks pretty dang close to the color of most white peoples’ feet. A whole lot closer than to the color of someone who’s Black or of Latin or Native American descent.

Wouldn't it have been European pink because ballet began in Europe?
Thank you. Although, maybe it should be called French pink, then.

Definitely more, Josephine!

“Slightly frightening but kinda cute” …is basically how I describe myself 🤣
I’m always quite surprised how little Josephine knows about other countries’ ballets, dancers, movies with dancers in etc.

Yeah the closest I can get to my skin tone is the literally white or ivory shoes
The animal ballet is a ballet called Tales of Beatrix Potter and I just did that one in the spring where I live
As part of a company production? Or just you alone having a very eccentric day...? 🙂
