Can we just appreciate how clean that truck is
From what I’ve seen it’s the crew cabs of this generation of Ford truck that get treated nicely and not beat on as much as a single or extended cab
My moms 03 4x4 crew is cleaner and has almost 300k.
@@Flankerr More then clean enough, it shows someone has actually used it as a truck a time or 2.
@@Flankerr I've seen 2015's that make this truck look new
Your mom hasn’t been that clean since 03
That cool noise is called compressor surge and I caused by your blow off valve not opening
Well, that's the best sounding equipment failure I've ever had!
Yea its really not good I agree sounds cool but on my twin turbo bmw I had to use a bigger line going into the bov to keep it from surging
Or a malfunctioning or poorly controlled or undersized bov. ✌☺👍
@@AutoDetour also i think i remember a recall on the short bed reg cab trucks. when on the brakes hard it can lift the rear axle?? Edit. Instead of asking more questions about the setup ill watch the other vids. My next q was going to be what ecu ? Then rev limit? Boost cutoff is all good but fuel cut kills motors.
We call that stutututututu
Thanks Kade for helping Dad out with the filming. Grandma’s proud of you!!
Thanks Grandma!
Lol
@@86250r I think the joke must have gone over my head. Would you please be so kind as to let me know what I should be laughing at?

Nice truck, I have a 01 f150 5.4 2 valve almost 300,000 miles ...never was a Ford fan but this is the best truck I have ever owned.
You got lucky the 5.4 tends to have issues
3 valves are the ones that die early.
The early ones are stout one of our company trucks a 2000 f250 had the 5.4 it jus wouldn’t quit we put over 400k on that engine it started getting a lil weak but still ran good we jus swapped it for a 6.8v10
@@hunterrollins5646 not the 2v 5.4's
I have a 1998 sohc 5.4 in my 150. 199k, still strong.
Yeah that's called compressor Surge, and it's caused by the blow off valve not opening. That sound you're hearing is the air stalling over the compressor as it goes backwards against flow, or stops, when the throttle plate closes in the throttle body. It causes a sudden loading and unloading of the shaft very quickly axially and honestly doesnt really hurt the turbo until higher boost levels/shaft speeds.
I just bought a 97 Eddie Bauer expedition with the 5.4L I didn’t need to see this video!
This is the video you know you wanted to see
I just bought a 5.4 litre 1997 single cab -- stripped out with vinyl floors, no options, and very light compared to a new one.
I’m calling in the neighborhood of 460 whp at 12 psi. Gramps seems like a fun truck. 🤣
That's probably pretty close!
That’s a generous a amount.
@@brianmccarthy9855 not really. It’s a relatively fair amount considering it made just over 400 at 8.8 psi.
I bet he's at 530whp ish being a 4.6 probably makes a little under 500 on 10psi
Those 5.0 and 3.5 ford engines just put their old stuff to shame. 460whp is low hp now for forced induction . I'm just not impressed by this .
Compressor surge is what you're hearing from the blow off valve not working. At 100% duty cycle, what is the base wastegate spring youre using? If you go to a base 10# spring you could reduce the duty cycle of the boost controller. Get that blow off valve working. It'll keep the turbo alive longer.
It’s a 6# spring, that’s why I can only hit 12psi at 100% duty on my 3 port solenoid. Didn’t realize the % duty cycle would affect the bov.... I’ll need to try that out. I’m afraid if I put 10 pound spring in, I’ll be tempted to try 20psi tho!🤣
@@AutoDetour I understand the dilemma about boost being addictive. Good luck in your endeavor. My recommendation will definitely fix your boost issue. Also, as i stated previously-get that blow off valve fixed to stop the compressor surge. It is very bad for the turbo. Keep it in between the lines and keep having fun my friend.
@@jameshenson4871 I hope he gets it sorted. A lot of creators just half ass these projects and ramp up boost pressure just to blow it up an episode later. This is a pretty solid truck.
My current 2003 E-250 has the same 5.4 2V Triton engine. 560k still going strong, enough said.
What 560k?????
damn I never thought I would say this but aside from the cam phasers and spark plugs shooting out, the 5.4 is a tough ass motor
No cam phasers in the 2 valve 5.4, but yes, sending a plug into orbit is certainly a possibility. 😂
@@AutoDetour espacially with boost😂
The two valves are complete tanks of a engine!
Ya its the 07 and up that blow their guts out at 175k. Pretty sure they came with a pack of helicoils in the glove box from the factory....
@@JohnDoe-jj6wf the 3v came out before 07
Underrated UA-camr
Thanks brother!🙏🏻
The triton bottom end is pretty good. My only concerns would be the compression ring gap under boost and the spark plug threads in the heads. Should hold up well otherwise. Pretty sweet!
Yeah I read about spark plug blowout and having to rethread. Haven't heard/read anything yet about the turbo setup having that issue.
Needs a stall convertor w/lockup plus some trans mods. Just doing those two things will wake the truck up.
Man, I love it. looks like a blast to drive. Makes me want to buy the kit for my 4.6l lol. We are on the same Facebook groups so I got 4 notifications when you upload lol. That sound your waste gate makes gives it that finshing touch when you let off the throttle 👍👍
It's definitely fun! Brakes need a little help. 😂 Oh yeah. I blasted it on all the groups earlier. Lol
Hey what group are you in id love to join
I like how he is hella informative as far as problems so you know 😂😂😂🤝
Fun video man.! We just sold my dads 5.4 2001 f150! Had 177k miles no problem. Gotta love the shakes and rattles in Graham and His friends
😂 I’ll fix the rattles someday.
If you add ring gap and fresh bearings up while you're at it it can handle some real boost lol
Around rod bolts and head studs and arp main studs
@@spankthemonkey3437 cheap upgrade forgot to mention. This is def going to help the cause ...
no, the rods'll go after 450-500 wheel. It's a time bomb on anything higher than that even with ring gap. the rods are the weakest link
I wanna see this against a Lightning
And I wanna see this in person someday.
I'd love to get it next to a lightning!
I second that. 👍
Harley Davidson edition was basically a 4dr Lightning
Lightning only ever put out 380 at the crank.
@@ronniestine A pulley swap will easily get you more power with the Lightning. Kenne Bell makes a bolt-on twin screw too. I think the Lightning would handily take this truck off the line, but the turbo truck would make up some ground as the speeds get higher. The Lightning has some advantages when it comes to suspension and traction too. Then there's the people who have turbocharged their lightning. You've got all forged internals so you can push the bottom end way harder than a standard 5.4.
My 05 5.4 3V handles 12 PSI very well with my P1X upgraded procharger.
Just hit 180K miles last week.
It’ll be getting rebuilt this spring.
Love my motor.
i got a nice 80k mile flareside scab 4x4 itd be sick to strap on a blower

I've got the same gauge on my supercharged 5.3. Its cool to see all the boost control functionality on a turbo set up
Such a great setup!
That thing is insane man.. 😳
Thanks man! It's crazy the difference it made!
Loving the spooley sounds. Music to my ears my guy! Love it!
Have you put much thought to doing an AWD conversion? It helped the Syclone so much. You could probably cut the boost and actually go faster as a result.
I drive a 2002 f250 with the 5.4 2v and i will say for how much people bash them i regularly haul 2500kg of stone up mountains and man has it treated me good, looking into putting a turbo on it due to the altitude change where i live, truck has 264k km and still runs great
Makes me want to buy an expedition and do the same.
Do it!!
That would be nice
I have an expedition. I love it.
Lower the thing and put a custom license plate on it that’s says thunder cause ford had a prototype expedition with the f150 lightning drivetrain in it if I remember correctly.
Btw man if you like that turbo flutter you can keep it @ low boost it won’t hurt anything , but if it’s high boost pressures that turbo surge can make shit fail. But yea your waste gate isn’t working properly .
*blow off valve
0:11 holy shit balls that 60-85 was quick as hell
The modular takes boost very well. The intaje and heads suck but the internals can take close to 700hp before they fail.. its the LS of the ford world
And the 4r70 is a good.. i recommend doing the 500hp J Mod. Search it. You bunch the holes in the separator plate larger.
Its a mod from one of the fuys who R&D that trans
These 2v 5.4s will run forever!
Mine has 390k
223k on mine
602K on mine.
@@keaganhunter1644 really? I'm asking because I want to buy a 2000 expedition. But it has 220k miles. $3k very clean though
@@biggs1485 Take the oil cap off and snap a picture of the cam lobe surface look for sludge and wear if it looks good and sounds good I would consider it. My 600,000 mile 5.4 is in better shape then my farm abused 4.6L same 2 V modular design.
That is a cool sleeper man! I have a 05 fx4 I purchased in 2010 used!, it had 70k on the odometer when I bought it fast forward 11 yrs later it has just over 170k! It started to run really rough a few weeks back I had bad misfires poor idling etc I took it to a solid reliable ford mechanic now it's getting the upgraded oil pump new timing chains tensioners phasers spark plugs coil packs the list goes on!!! it's blown one spark plug since I've owned it and had numerous coil pack failures !! It sounded like a diesel truck it ticked so bad for so long and ran poor but never broke down lol ! Hopefully when I get it back it will be like a brand new truck 🤣
Thanks Mike! They are great trucks and it's good you're getting those phasers done. Those can be a real problem in those if left untouched. You've given that truck a good life. Hope it's better than new when you get it back!
I have a friend who daily drives a 06 f150 with a whipple super charger. I think the truck makes around 430-440 something around there. I’m amazed by it every time lol
I literally did this 20 years ago and many times since. On both stock and built engines, 400 rwhp to 1000 rwhp. Good fuel, lower IATs and good tuning are the basics. A 5.4 is literally just a stroked Mustang engine. And do the spark plug inserts at some point if you doing bigger boost levels.
Fords truck trans are bulletproof I'm convinced
Haha! So far so good!
Mines been though some shit and I honestly have no clue how it's not dead yet.
I have a 2000 f150 with 460k on the original trans and transfer case if that tells you anything about that transmission holding up. I haven't exactly babied it and I bought it new in Nov of 99.
I'm spending 3k plus on fuel as it is in my van this would make it an easy 6k a year. Yes.
Compressor surge.....chuff, chuff, chuff
The reason it’s making that sound is because all the boost built up is dumping all at one time making that flutter noise or the classic “stu Stu Stu Stu”
I like the little red Honda you have parked in the grass
lol
That turbo would come in handy if you were towing a heavy trailer or boat, maybe do a complete rebuild with quality parts such as arp rod bolts, mahle pistons, etc.
I wanna see some 4wd launches lol
Here ya go! ua-cam.com/video/TG17FkJDnK0/v-deo.html
PLEASE GO TO AN F150 FORUM AND DO A WRITE UP ON THIS AND GIVE FULL DETAILS OF THE RELIABILITY, DRIVEABILITY, ETC. and then tell us what forum you did it on.
There is no info on turbo 5.4 2v trucks ANYWHERE
There's a Facebook group called Ford 2v modular engine builders. Mostly mustang guys but there's some trucks and its the same engine
Because they're not worth the money do what other ford guys do and 5.3 swap it
There is a reason no one does this. But with the shit up he's going to blow up the turbo before the engine.
Just curious on what the engine temperature is after standing on this turbo pretty hard.
One of your vac lines to blow off valve is blocked, that noise is the pressure going back through your compressor wheel, not a good thing, but not a bad thing either lol
I still haven't dug into it to see why it's doing it. I just keep sending it. 😂
These motors are more stout them people give them credit for.
I want to seem some 4x4 pulls haha
I don’t think my 2003 FX4 Gramps could do that: wants to go back to the farm and live an easy life.
You have a lot of faith in that 3V
This is a 2v 5.4 not 3v. The 3v I believe didn’t start till 2004 when they changed body styles.
Exactly what Mark said. 2v FTW!
Ford advertisement: “Now introducing… the Triton Ecoboost!”
Minus the Eco….
They blow the spark plugs out without any boost.
Great video I had a 99 with a 5.4 with over 500,000 on it used it for roofing plowing snow and ran the shit out of it . Not one major issue . My 08 is a POS .
I love how you block in the F150 with the viper haha I know you love the truck just a lil more 😂 beautiful truck and viper brotha 🤙🏽
Spark plugs have left the chat, and the block.
Just got one of these from a guy for $200 from a old E-150. Going to turbo it and put it in my foxbody.
That sound is because your bov isn't adequate and excess boost going through the turbo. You need a better bov.
2nd guy said
It ain’t over till it’s over
the viper aka a dodge colt with a body upgrade, now The Chrysler laser turbo that was a piston dropper, and the dodge ram was a pushrod launcher
Compressor surge, it's not particularly good for the turbo AFAIK. This happened to me once when the vacuum line slipped off my BOV, noticed it instantly by the different sound.
@@CodeBaconfy Makes sense
Yeah. I'm wondering if the bov quit working. I'll have to see what's up.
That is compressor surge as stated below. Did you change the vacuum routing at all? Make sure the bov and wg have direct lines to vacuum. You don't want to do that for a long period of time or you will destroy the bearings in the turbo.
I didn't change anything. I'm wondering if the cheap Chinese bov just quit working
MORE than likely that's a vaccum line issue. Either messing up where check valve goes. Some sort of vaccum issue with the bov. Your turbo is chopping air the bov isn't doing anything.
You are correct!
I've been curious about this engine because I also have a 99 F150 with the 5.4. I'd like to increase the power to impress some street dudes near where I live.
Under vacuum or low boost your getting bov flutter it’s just air stuck in the charge pipes bouncing back and forth causing the bov to flutter as long as it’s not doing it at higher boost applications your solid. Fyi it is not surge or dose your good my man. Also try loosing the bov spring just play with it
With my cars we see this when we add front mount intercoolers and it’s very common with longer charge pipes routes
Just my 2¢ but you might want to see if your BOV is functioning at all. If it is, it should open up and not let the turbo surge when you come out of the pedal.
Hmm. Yeah that might not be good, as much as I like the sound. I'll have to check it out
10hp per 1psi is the go too in turbo world
How are those spark plugs still in the motor?!
467whp at 12psi. If it were mine I would turn it down to 80% duty to drive around on. That 1 psi isnt worth blowing it up lol. My tuned ecoboost is at the same power level it runs mid 4sec 0-60 times.
Probably not a bad idea. I'm super curious to see what the number is
My '04 Super Duty 4x4 with the 5.4L needs a turbo. I'm going to copy Grandpa.
Those 2 valves are tanks. Dad's 02 lightning is pushing 15psi all day long and is happy as a pig in shit.
I bought a stock turbo for my f150. Its a must
Tick tick slap slap timeing chains are knocking at your door while the spark plugs allready ejcted last week
Its gonna be a rod that goes first the Lightning’s are only good for around 450 at the rear and it’s just a matter of time or it’s gonna be a piston, I just went with a forged crank, pistons and scat H beam rods 2 years ago
Back spooling might sound cool but that's about it
That 40-80mph pull IS QUICK DUDE
Ahh the viper, makes me think of a time when dodge was still American
I was not expecting this to be in mn, most our trucks rot away long before engine failure
Man, I'm just waiting for your spark plugs to blow out on that motor. It's my understanding that boosting the early Triton motors leads to that problem. However, I don't own an early model. Mine is a 2010 Triton, and I've got 170000 miles on it (105k of those miles are mine). I've been absolutely amazed at how reliable my truck has been. Maintenance is key. Forget Fords 7500 mile oil change interval. I do mine every 5000, using only factory spec Motorcraft 5w20 and their 820s filter. I've also had to replace the trans filter/fluid, and the differential oil. Ford says they're "lifetime fluids", but don't take that literally. My fluids were nasty.
What motor does the 2010 triton have?
Two valve and how many miles Sir ??? Super clean install
The Turkey gobble when letting off the throttle is closed throttle surge. That sound under load is really bad. Not so bad off throttle.
As always Ryan, awesome job on the truck. I've chatted with you on one of the Facebook groups before.
Thanks man! I really appreciate that!
I have a 2001 two door short bed with the 5.4

I love this truck..i have a 2002 f150 i would love to have that turbob set up on my truck..😅
That flutter noise could either be compressor surge, or you have something wrong with your throttle body.
God I love gramps!
Good luck gettin the plugs out!!!
Too bad they won't make a kit for the triton V10 😭😭😭 would love to put a kit in my 01 350
We jus swapped a v10 in our 2000 f250 from the 5.4 the v10 is a monster ive been looking everywhere for a turbo kit with no luck
@@jwayne1202 I mean I don't even need a whole kit really just headers are the hardest part if someone could make a few different header styles would be perfect everything else can be for the most part fabricobbled together with ease. If someone could do a twin turbo style headers and a single turbo style for simplicity I just want a single turbo setup. But there is a guy that I believe did a custom twin turbo setup and made something like over 700hp on really low boost. But he hasn't made any updates in a long time.
I would love to see one!
@@AutoDetour here it is. My bad not over 700 hp but over 700tq I mean I guess if you go by crank hp and factor in drive train loss and all that I suppose it's not far off from 700hp but at the wheels it was like 550+whp and 800+ wheel torque on only 6psi I don't remember what all he did internal wise but I know it wasn't anything extreme or anything. Just some valvetrain rods pistons and a few other things but I don't think he even sleeved anything.

Nice truck.... I have same FX4 with 80k miles
this dude style his hair with a leaf blower. sweet truck (and viper) though. How's the transmission holding up with the increased power?
Your bov is not opening fast enough to relieve pressure. It's springing back and forth very quickly because, maybe, you don't have the right spring in it? Like I said maybe... Hope that helps
I’m excited to see what gramps will do against whitie 😈 good video!
Same! Thanks man!
That truck is clean
Me and my dad are about to do a build very similar! Your truck is rad
SICK TRUCK
From my experience, the weak point of the 5.4 is the spark plugs blowing out of the head. The other weak point is the flex plate on the 4r70e transmission. This truck might have some variant of that trans which means the flex plate is paper thin.
This is an '03. It has the updated heads with more threads. The 4r70w is hanging in there. I know it won't last forever though.
My f150 5.4 2v has the rare 4r100 transmission and the 10.25 rear end. It also has factory CNG- 120 octane rating, harder valves and valve seats. I’d like to mill the head or boost compression. CNG can handle 14:1 or even 15:1 compression. Just don’t know who would tune it.
@@Upliftyourbrothers Is that stuff standard in the heavy half?
@@Tanman312 yeah. Depending on the year, early ones were called f-250ld for light duty, then the 2000 and new were f150’s with the ‘7700’ package. They WILL have 7 lug wheels. It’s pretty much a f250 with a f150 body. Its more f250 than 150.
