    The Affinity line seems to always be a winner in my book as the quality at that price point is hard to beat. And even though the guitars are great as-is, they are also great modding platforms.

      I bought an affinity tele a few years back that was shrill af. It played like a dog until I took it upon myself to shave down the high E nut slot. After that it still sounded shrill. It was a floor model. I'm looking at you, guitar showcase of Campbell. I love small/medium shops but that would've been the difference between some poor youth following their passion vs giving up and thinking guitar was impossible and that they were incompetent.

    That Lake Placid Blue looks absolutely stunning on this guitar. I'm fairly certain that I've never even picked up a Squier and if I have, it wasn't memorable. But this guitar looks fantastic.

    I recently got a Squier HH Strat off the same Affinity line. I know it's a different shape of guitar, but with it being an affinity I'd imagine some of the features would cross over.
    One thing I don't like is the split shaft tuners, I always worry the strings would pop out of the top (which happened once on the high E ), as well as not having the screw on the back of the tuners making it harder for me to upgrade to better ones. Which is why this morning I upgraded to some Hipshot locking tuners!
    Always enjoy your videos!

    • @leamanc
      @leamanc 2 роки тому +5

      A lot of folks, myself included, prefer split shaft tuners. Easier to re-string, no string pokes, and you can easily take the strings off and put the same strings back on. Never had a string pop out, and honestly I’m not sure how that would even happen-maybe not enough wraps around the post?

    • @tonyn1926
      @tonyn1926 2 роки тому +2

      I love the split shaft tuners. When putting the new string on, make sure you bend it down the side of the shaft and have enough string to make two or three wraps, it should never slip off.

      I think either gotoh or hipshot makes a conversion plate for vintage style tuners where you dont have to drill those holes. Although you still might have to enlarge the tuner hole which sucks

    I appreciate this review and look forward to the Jazzmaster comparison video. This one has me conflicted. It’s probably one of the best values for your money out there, as they did not skimp on the parts and nice touches on this one. But it does feel like a Jazzocaster more than a traditional Jazzmaster. However, some of the other videos I’ve watched show the pickups sounding more like a traditional Jazzmaster, perhaps because they featured more clean tones.
    Regardless of what it is or isn’t, it’s still a fine guitar for US$300.

    Great deep dive Landon (yet again) I think that guitar looks REALLY good and the tones are reasonably good for an affinity.. oh & an old school trick I learned a few decades ago, load a spring into the hole where u screw in the trem arm, and you can get that arm to sit where you want

    No more Whammy Bars or tremolo/vibrato bridges for me. Drives me crazy when the guitar suddenly goes out of tune because you used the whammy bar or did a step and a half bend.

    From Leo: Looks like a pretty decent guitar for an entry level price. The two big single coils are always a signature sound. The strat style trem may not be authentic, but they certainly have a shorter, less demanding learning curve for most people. I have been happy with split shaft tuners since back when that style was all there was. Good Demo, thanks for your work..

    When I saw this one released, it actually added a guitar to my future collection list rather than replacing the CV. I'd really like to have them both. No reason for me to have as many guitars as I do, especially since I can barely play, but I like that they're all just a little different. I try not to get things that are too similar to each other. Like, for me, I don't understand why one would have multiple telecasters, beyond one traditional (w/ single coils) and one deluxe (for the Wide-Range humbuckers). I'm sure there are differences that folks could tell me, but that's a bit too granular for me. I like more obvious differences. This affinity has much more obvious differences to the CV for me. Different trem, different wiring scheme, different pickups. I have a Harley Benton GuitarBass too, so I already know I like the body shape. Different sounds man! I can barely play, but man, at this rate, I'm gonna have a guitar for everything at some point. Doesn't help me play any better, but it's fun, nonetheless. :) (It's also the thrill of the hunt for a crazy deal, I think. So far, only my recently aqcuired Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Short Scale goes over $200. And that was only $260. I figured I could spend a little more on that one since it's usually over $400 used.) Anyway, now I'm rambling... Thanks for the video Landon!

    • @johncollins5552
      @johncollins5552 2 роки тому +1

      Stop spending money on more guitars and spend it on some real good guitar lessons with a really great guitar teacher.
      All you need then is one great guitar and one great amp like a vox ac30.

    • @NeoRichardBlake
      @NeoRichardBlake 2 роки тому +2

      @@johncollins5552 Oh, I fully realize that I need lessons, not more guitars. I just have fun with the latter. One of these days I'll get off my butt and get some in-person lessons. I have online lessons, but I never make the time to actually work on them. It's part of my procrastinating personality. :P I do like what I've learned any time I actually get into them for a little while though.
      I figure if I'm having fun, I'm still not doing anything wrong. I'm just not doing anything progressive. ;) The point is for me to have fun, not to schedule more work for myself.
      The problem is that I spent so long in school, with basically all of my time scheduled to the hilt, that I have a hard time scheduling things anymore, even if it's centered around having fun.
      I do love the sound of the AC30 though. (I won't let myself become an amp guy until I actually learn to play though. Much cheaper to collect needless guitars over needless amps.) Right now, I just have one inexpensive, but decent (to me anyway) modeling amp, and it fits all my goofy needs, while still being practical in that it lets me hear the guitars, so I can dink around on them.

    • @davidgood6744
      @davidgood6744 2 роки тому

      @@NeoRichardBlake An AC30 might be overkill, but I’m big on players having a decent amp. The amp is a big part of your sound. I’ve seen several players who have Fenders and Gibsons playing into a Frontman 10. You won’t get an inspiring sound with that rig.

    • @NeoRichardBlake
      @NeoRichardBlake 2 роки тому +1

      @@davidgood6744 Agreed. I'm sure an AC30 is overkill. I am literally, only learning for my own fun, not to go gigging or to play for anyone (maybe family but that's it). My modeling amp fits my desire to play around with different sounds for now. It's more important to learn how to play first, then I'll hone a desired tone when I actually know what the hell I'm doing. ;) Honestly, that's probably a big factor into why amps haven't really pulled much of my attention yet. Sort of a next level idea. Once I learn to play, then I can splurge on a "nice" guitar and a "good" amp. I can hear notes in pitch, without it sounding like it's coming through a wall or an AM radio, which is good enough for now.

    P90’s in general just provide a sweet spot for everything in my mix. But, this also depends on the wiring. They suffer if theres too much wiring between the pickup and output jack. Agreed, not really a Jazzmaster. For one, these Affinity 'Jazzmaster pickups' sounded more like P-90s. With a P-90 tone and the Strat Trem, this could be a great affordable option for someone who wanted these specs on a 25.5" scale length, and didn't care for a typical Jazzmaster tone and bridge. Not much else in the current Squier line with P-90s apart from Paranormal Baritone at 27" scale (and fixed bridge) at close to twice the price. Another option is the Harley Benton CST-24T P90 (6 point trem) at 25" scale for about the same price as the Affinity.

    It feels like it should have been part of the Bullet Series(Cheaper lineup) because for an Affinity vesion made in Indonesia you should get the original control layout and bridge and tremolo.
    Because with the standard point bridge and tremolo with single coil you're getting a stratocaster in the shape of a Jazzmaster.

    The claw springs should be straight.
    With the outside springs angled like that , the spring in the middle does nothing. Think about it , physics.

      I noticed and thought that too. It’s wild how huge companies like them still ship their guitars with the springs like that.

    I bought this guitar in Burgundy Mist last fall for $256 USD. I wanted a Revstar, but this guitar fit my budget. Fender makes a similar American Performer, and G & L makes the Doheny, so stop talking about fake Jazzmasters. I love mine. People tell me it sounds great, and every guitar player I’ve shown it to really likes it-especially the neck. It is a really good guitar.

      Yamaha has been “hit or miss” for me, I've had issues with Yamaha guitars. My favorite Yamaha is my Pacifica 612 and even it's plagued with fret buzz and uneven frets. I'll get it fixed up one day.
      Squire, I've had issues with as well but mainly from the bullet series, and even then nothing major but just the things you’d expect from a sub $200 guitar. I'd personally get a Classic Vibe before I got another Yamaha. I guess that comes down to personal preference as I do prefer the Fender/Squire design over Yamaha's stuff.
      I also love the necks on Squire guitars, they feel just right.

    Thanks, Landon. Yes, I've seen this model referred to a a "Jazzmaster-shaped object", but as with many Jazzmaster-styled guitars that depart from the original features you can assess the guitar on what it is, not necessary what it isn't, and see if that suits your needs. I've found these newer Affinities to be a notch above the old in quality and finish. It's a sort of to bracket creep. On the matter of those pots I really would like to know what the brand is, as I had the shaft pull out the same brand tone pot on an Affinity Tele Deluxe and need to replace it. If I can get the same brand readily, so much the better.

      If u had one break it might be best to get a different brand pot of higher quality

      Also it doesn’t have jazzmaster pickups or tremolo and bridge or switches it just has a offset body, the Jaguar also has that body but isn’t a jazzmaster 🤔🤔
