The loudest noise people probably get exposed to daily is when you connect your headphones and play something but you forgot it was on the highest. Poor Eardrums.
I can relate to that. Once when I was showering, out of nowhere, a bottle of shampoo falls off the shelf and hits the ground. I almost fucking fell off my two feet.
Forgot to wear ear protection one time I was sighting in my AR-15. Fired two rounds and my ear drums were hurting me for literally two days. Not just ringing, but like a headache in my ears.
The loudest sound I've experienced is a FA-18 Super Hornet in flight from around 50-100m away at Brisbane River Fire. When it was flying towards me I was like "oh yeah this isn't to loud", but when it goes over and behind you it is the most extreme, chilling, and breathtaking sound ever.
Loudest noise was when I was in military training. Our tanks were in position, doing test fires. I thought they were done after a long break of silence, so I go to set up my biwak up against our armored vehicle. I'm sitting there, concentrating on that, when all of a sudden, the nearest tank fires a round. Now, the ear facing the tank was fine, but the ear just two feet from the armor-plated vehicle next to me, experience severe pain, as the blast resonated off the solid surface and got amplified. Didn't feel so good. :(
AG3NT Yeah, the pain was really temporary and gone before nightfall. Another guy from the team was less fortunate on a different occasion, where I think he actually bled from one ear just a little, yet didn't suffer permanent damage to my understanding.
I was really stupid one time when I was 14 and I lit a firecracker, one picked off from those Chinese poppers. I thought I could light it and throw it before it exploded but it popped in my hand immediately and made me deft in my left ear for about 40min haha. Glad it wasn't that bad.
a few days ago i was filling up a water bottle with compressed air with an air compressor and it exploded in my hand. i am okay and it didnt hurt. manly as fuck
i use to live on airforce bases and some of the fighter jets do an afterburner take off and go straight up breaking the sound barrier. the sonic booms and military aircraft I heard on a regular basis were loud as all hell. as for recently I have used a deno saw repeatedly without hearing protection. I may or may not have intermittent tinnitus now.
Damn it... now I can never live out my dream of having a meaningful conversation with a Blue Whale. At almost 190 Decibels his vast girth of wisdom would fall on dead ears...
+Justin Abramson Sound in water is different from sound in air. 190 db is powerful, but it has to move water, meaning it loses power in water much more quickly.
+David Burke actually Water is denser than air, so it takes more energy to generate a wave, but once a wave has started, it willtravel faster than it would do in air
When I was in the US Navy, I was stationed on an aircraft carrier. I'll tell you that when they are ready to take off, and turn on the after burner, the noise is painful. You have to cover your ears, and your chest vibrates. Not fun at all. JohnC. vetreran, US Navy
My dad went shooting ONCE without hearing protection and permanently damaged his hearing. It's got slowly worse since then and now he's pretty much half deaf. My loudest sound was probably also a gunshot.
Dear writers, how about instead of "Something called the stereocilia" you use "Stereocilia, which are tiny like hairs that detect fluid motion and play a large part in hearing and balance".
I was splitting water molecules once into hydrogen and oxygen using a device i made also known as an HHO generator and i let light to the resulting gases by accident and the bang was so loud that my left ear was ringing for 2 weeks, i thought I did permanent damage but all is ok now!
What's that sound called when it's really silent , that high pitch sound you hear? I made some errors in the programming of the world but humans eventually make sense of them.

Did it just go away? Do you know usual that is? I'm just a bit worried because I'm only 16 and having tinnitus in my other ear even though I've tried to be careful with music... I just have waaaay too many musical hobbies ._.
Music was, and still is my main hobby. Nowadays I only produce music with my pc, I am what they call a "Bedroom Studio Producer". I play a little guitar also, and I always have to have some kind of music playing, even when I'm sleeping. But to get rid of that annoying thing I had to be without listening to anything at all for a long time. Loud things became a no-no. I have already lost 50% of the hearing frequency range, so I avoid at all costs extremely loud places like clubs or concerts (or psytrance rave parties in my case). But the thing that really ended the problem for good was some medication I started taking, that made me relax a lot, because apparently it was also stress that was causing a high frequency vibration to occur physically inside my ear, resulting in the brain processing it as noise. Avoid very loud music, specially with high power headphones, they do the worst damage because the sound vibrations are directly beamed to your ear.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! It is relieving to know that I'm not tied to this for the rest of my life. Mine isn't very loud, luckily, so most of time I don't pay much attention to it, but if I'll be living for 60 years more I believe it would get quite irritating with time. I play multiple instrument and compose with pc, like you, and love to listen to music too, so it's hard to limit the the time with music, but I'll try to keep my ears alive. Good luck with your music production and hearing! ^^
The loudest noise...thunder from a lightning strike about 5 feet from my head. I essentially heard nothing but a "tick" and then silence, total silence for several minutes. I didn't even hear a ringing in my ears for those several minutes. My hearing did gradually come back over a few days. Being "close" to a controlled explosion, while in the military. Was the most extreme I've experienced. While its no longer sound per se, the shock wave / pressure wave was so unpleasant even with ear protection on it left me with a sort of white noise sound for about an hour.
1- NKOTBSB concert-just all of the screaming and loud music with the combination of bright lights and strobe lighting 2-my friend's brother threw a bottle rocket fireworks at my general direction. I didn't hear right for hours.
The loudest sound I've heard was at a concert. I don't know how people can handle that, it's absolutely horrifying. I could feel the music beating inside me as if it were my own heart.
Loudest noise I've ever been exposed to is, without a doubt, my brothers car!!! He had a, let's say, rather dramatic sound system set up. It was a late 90s BMW 540i, with only the front seats, the whole back end of the car was speakers and box. He used to enter (and win) sound offs in the UK with approx 157db, produced by 4/6 15" subs plus a whole bunch more speakers in the front and rear (and doors) My first exposure to this (and this was no where near full volume) when he gave me a lift to work one day, was massively ringing ears and I even staggered when walking. Not very pleasant is an huge understatement haha, and he used to actually drive around like this!!! As you can imagine, his hearing is far from perfect nowadays!!! Great vid!!!
Once while I was in 3rd grade, I went to a concert. But the floor plan was so awful, people had to cross the SPEAKERS leaving very little space between me and the seats to go to the bathroom. No other way. That sound almost gave a pulse of unconsciousness. After that, nothing.
Been exposed to the LRAD ( long range acoustic device) and artillery as a former 13B in the Army. I'm 25 and have a little tinnitus in my left ear constantly.
***** The terrifying part was over before i knew it had begun that being the actual strike of lightning. After that I could only think about how cool it was to see lightning so close.
The loudest sound I've ever heard was probably a massive in-cloud lightning discharge that occurred right above my head when I was standing outside enjoying a storm. The discharge was very dim so I didn't think much of it. Not that I could have thought about it, because less than half a second after I saw it I heard what sounded more like a HUGE explosion than a clap of thunder. The bass was incredible. I could feel the air pressure blast hit me and heard it rattle all the windows in the house. My ears were ringing for about a minute afterward, but I'd do it again in a second. It was intense!
44 magnum in a uninsulated indoor gun range . had good hearing protection .but still walked out with ringing in my ears . been ringing for 9weeks now . Protect your ears folks .
ecocommuhippy Makes sense that there would be some type of limit based on the amount of molecules in the medium. Same as in space noone can hear you scream :p max db = 0
ecocommuhippy The loudest sound that supposedly ever occurred on earth is the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in 1883. kottke.org/14/10/the-worlds-loudest-sound
The loudest thing I recall was shooting a .410 Snake Charmer without any hearing protection when I was about 14 or so a couple of years at a lake with my grandpas brother. However since that was my first time firing an actual long gun naturally I did not expect the recoil and I was never told how to actually shoulder it properly so the plastic stock hit me on my braces and my ears were ringing a good while afterward and long story short I wear double hearing protection when I go to the range and improved on my marksmanship skills thanks to my little lesson there and I still have fairly good hearing.
How does frequency affect ear damage? I sat in a sound pressurized van (150db) for a couple songs (about 8 minutes) and my ears were perfectly fine (definitely felt it in my chest though). At the same time, I get headaches easily in noisy environments (high school hallways). Are low frequencies a lot safer?
The loudest noise I've ever been exposed to was when I was in the war in Syria while the Russian and Syria air-plans was bombing our city they throw big boxes and killed a lot of people in front of my eyes we saw streets that despair completely ! My brother died to
the loudest noise i have experienced has been in a night club. So when i went to a concert i put cotton wool in my ears which dulled the sounds at first but then i got used to them and could hear the concert normally. When we left the concert and i took them out my ears went back to normal. As opposed to leaving the night club when i had ringing in my ears. My father was a carpenter builder and had to use nail guns in an underground car park they were building; he has permanent hearing damage that is quite significant.
isn't a sound cannon being developed too? if only they'd play bass cannon with it to kill, then you'd kick it by not only a bass cannon, but a bass gun
the loudest ive been exposed too was 130db from a federal signal thunderbolt 1003 tornado siren from 1/2 block away, and yeah my eardrums stung when the horn rotated to where it was facing me. gunfire doesn't really hurt my ears all the much.
Can you explain the difference between the 150db you're talking about and the 152 db i subject myself to every day in my car stereo. Bass frequencies wise. I've sat in wall's that produce 162 decibels and i didn't die nor did i suffer tinnitus but my ribs sure did hurt really enjoyable.
The loudest sound I've ever heard, well theres two, and both compete for my number 1 spot. 13 Years old (Early 2000s) A severe thunderstorm rolled into Oshawa lasting for a while, my mother and I along with a friend decided to watch the lightning on the front porch (under a roof) and then a huge bright flash of lightning happened (lit up the entire street like it was daytime). The following crack of thunder was so loud it scared the crap out of me and even made the windows and wood parts of the house shake. The other one would have to be about 8 years ago (Age 16), filling up my bike tires at a gas station on a hot day, a truck filling up the stations gas tanks had one of its tires explode (heat and defect failure?). I thought something exploded like a gas tank or something. Considering how close I was (the Air pump wasn't far from the filler holes in the ground), I'm surprised I wasn't hurt or killed from the exploding tire shrapnel, or made permanently deaf by that.
I'm working on a novel based upon the movies Final Countdown and Top Gun. The scene I'm working on now has 4 F-35 jets flying at Mach 2 take on four Zeros at well, a lot less but flying toward them for combat at, whatever Zeros flew at. What warning to my zeros have that the F-35s are closing in? What happens when they hit that sonic boom at say distances of 25 feet, 50 feet, 100 feet, 1,000 and 10,000 feet? What happens to my zeros and their pilots? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
the only thing that made my ears ring was only one time when I popped a bubble in bubble wrap right up to my ear. (I have been to rock concerts, drag races, and air shows with jets)
loudest noise probably is thunder - the lightning hit a tree about 100 yds away from where i was standing, and i remember hearing a lot of ringing after that. Few of my friends had their eardrums burst and started bleeding from their ears- yes they were rushed to the ER and was fine. Question: If I concentrate, i can hear a moderate ringing in my head. Is that bad? i don't think i listen to loud music compared to my friends and they don't have this kind of incident. What do you think jonathan?
I have sound induced tinnitus from bumping my head in a car accident more than 20 years ago. I hear the sound of water rushing and feel pain in my right ear when there is a loud noise or one of a certain frequency, such as someone talking loudly. I have to plug my ear during singing in church, and must remind my husband frequently to talk softer.
I once went to an air show where the fighter jets were doing a mock dog fight. at one point one of the fighters flew by very very close to the ground at very close to super sonic and was probably the loudest thing I've ever heard so far
I remember them old 737-200s taking off from Manchester Airport.. Used to stand right next to them and man.. you could feel the rumble inside your chest from them old Prat&whitney JT8s ... You don't get that so much from modern day jetliners though..
The loudest.. was a demo van i helped build for sound competition. 168.1 db @ 31 kilowatts of power connected to an array of subs and full range speakers.
It also depends on the frequency. for example 140db at 10,000hz will be a hell of a lot more painful than 155db at 25hz. There are car audio system that produce over 165db on music and people can sit in those without being harmed because of how low the frequency is.
Have a friend who's a US Marine Corps Infantryman and he told us that on deployments they don't use Hearing Protection, so one day while he was back we took my Rifles and Pistols out to the ranch and we shot about 1,500 Rounds of ammo using no ear protection, I have a Fostech Bumpski Stock on one of my ARs that allows me to bump fire (Rapid Fire) and to be honest it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, sure my ears were ringing for the first few shots but as time went on my ears adapted to the sound and it was like no big deal.
but how did some popular criminals fire bullets from shotguns, pistols and rifles and they have only slight deafness?when my dad was in 2nd year of high school he and the rest of the 2nd year went to shoot some ww1 guns at a shooting range (probably was some sort of drill in the case of a war breaking out or if you get attacked so you can defend yourself.also he was in a pretty small school so there were only about 90 students in total in second year) without ear protection and he said he had tinnitus for 2-3 days straight and wasnt able to hear basically anything, but after that he was fine, and even today his hearing is excellent .
Hello how can I check for the decibels of a cash counting machine? My ears have been ringing and my ears feel very sensitive.. my head had been hurting and so i take advil to help but it be very helpful if you could help me to check how i can measure this sound
I have chronic tinnitus because my ears are very sensitive and things like loud conversation willl leave my ears ringing. Sometimes autism sucks. The loudest noise I've ever heard was a concert in a school gym using speakers that are supposed to be used in a much larger area. Instant meltdown. On an even more pleasant note, your internal organs have frequencies and if they vibrate at those frequencies they will explode.
At a rock concert once I climbed up a barricade that was close to the enormous speakers . It was exhilarating but my ear drums felt like they were close to bursting and felt intense vertigo . I had to get down fast .
I've sat in 170dB with no ear protection for about 10 seconds and in 166dB for over a minute at a car audio competition. I myself drive a car with a 154dB capable sound system which I demo a couple times a week no ear protection and my hearing is fine. I'm sure these scales are not definite and depend on the frequency or frequencies played. As I see it from experience, this does not apply for low bass.
The loudest noise I've ever been exposed to was a 10 year old in an Xbox live party
i legit laughed at this
With a Kinect mic with the TV on full volume

loudest noise i heard is a 7 year old screaming

Daniel Renard What's a biwak? 😮
Idk if its allowed, but on a fire exercise, id keep earplugs on untill departing the area.
You can't get a sound louder than 194db. Above that it becomes a shockwave
You can, but you wont hear it because its so loud.
shock wave is sound dont be stupid!

it is sound! if you dont know sound is also waves but when it gets strong they call it shock wave but in reality they are all waves.

We did a new episode on whether noise is loud enough to kill you. Turns out IT CAN. Find out how!
Dear writers, how about instead of "Something called the stereocilia" you use "Stereocilia, which are tiny like hairs that detect fluid motion and play a large part in hearing and balance".
Could you make a video on why you can get dizzy and your vision blurry if you stand up too fast?

DobbyTheElf Sure! We'll add it to our list of topics to cover in the future!
I thought the maximum possible sound in air is 194dB? Please explain BrainStuff :)
I hear a dull ringing when it is silent

1- NKOTBSB concert-just all of the screaming and loud music with the combination of bright lights and strobe lighting 2-my friend's brother threw a bottle rocket fireworks at my general direction. I didn't hear right for hours.
Wow. Now I want to see NKOTBSB live.
It was a great concert. New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys--great combination...boy bands at their finest.
I just wanted to know how loud Uvogin had to shout to kill one of of the shadow beasts
You guys title your videos really smart. It makes me curious almost every time and I gotta click!
Thanks Mistah Jay!
BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks lol OK Harley Quinn
Loudest sound I've heard is top fuel dragsters, they are loud enough that you can feel a reasonable amount of vibration in the air when they race
Nah, sit center row on a drag strip while a jet car speeds by at 150 and top fuel dragsters seem like theyre nothing
Aaron Berkofsky Lol nah that's nothing. Try standing next to a space shuttle while it's launching
Mohammed Aliyu Fair, Ill give you that one.
Me to man, it was so bad!!!
BusVids Perth that's nothing compared to jet trucks
The loudest noise I ever heard was a Formula 1 car racing past me when me and my dad spent the day out at the Goodwood festival of speed.
flames1000000 The loudest noise I ever heard was a 14.5x114mm ammo fired out of PTRS-41 anti-tank rifle.
Prank Them All ...Ouch.
The loudest sound I have heard is the sound of how awesome I am. What was that? Sorry, I can't hear you.
Who listened to this at max volume?

Enrique Ibarra no shit, it was a bad one
Thats so racist man
Lol i am hispanic.
The loudest sound I've heard was at a concert. I don't know how people can handle that, it's absolutely horrifying.
I could feel the music beating inside me as if it were my own heart.
Pusc
Loudest sound I've heard is my computer when I forgot to plug in my headphones at night
After that, nothing.
a .44 magnum fired 2 feet away when I forgot my hearing protection. heard the ring for a day really loud and not anymore since luckily
Sorry for being so late but just open your mouth. 🙃
The loudest thing I have ever heard is my Aunt speaking.
Been exposed to the LRAD ( long range acoustic device) and artillery as a former 13B in the Army. I'm 25 and have a little tinnitus in my left ear constantly.
lightning struck in a park a couple hundred metres away from my house and that was the loudest thing I've ever heard
i was standing near a light post and it hit the light post fucking loud as shit
The loudest noise i've ever experienced? women.
edgy
true dat
their voice is so fucking sharp
*ahem*
Black woman and Latinas
44 magnum in a uninsulated indoor gun range . had good hearing protection .but still walked out with ringing in my ears . been ringing for 9weeks now . Protect your ears folks .
Even though the threshold is 185dB-200 the loudest sound you can get on land is 195dB due to air pressure at sea level
Huh. That's interesting. Never heard that!
ecocommuhippy Makes sense that there would be some type of limit based on the amount of molecules in the medium. Same as in space noone can hear you scream :p max db = 0
ecocommuhippy The loudest sound that supposedly ever occurred on earth is the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in 1883. kottke.org/14/10/the-worlds-loudest-sound
Shochwaves can be much louder.
OMG.. FW THINKING.. IS THAT YOU?
Yep!
BrainStuff - HowStuffWorks OMG
How does frequency affect ear damage? I sat in a sound pressurized van (150db) for a couple songs (about 8 minutes) and my ears were perfectly fine (definitely felt it in my chest though). At the same time, I get headaches easily in noisy environments (high school hallways). Are low frequencies a lot safer?
It takes longer for low frequency to damage your ears. Try to take 150 dB of 100hz and above with no subs.
The loudest noise I've ever been exposed to is Donald Trumps ego.
Sean Place
...what?
What does Marcellus Wallace, look like!?
The loudest noise I've ever been exposed to was when I was in the war in Syria while the Russian and Syria air-plans was bombing our city they throw big boxes and killed a lot of people in front of my eyes we saw streets that despair completely !
My brother died to
ima stop listening to earrapes
the loudest noise i have experienced has been in a night club.
The loudest fart was recorded at 87 decibels
Pfft.
Thats nothing next to mine when i eat beans.
Loudest noise I've ever heard was DuoLingo Owl killing my family.
isn't a sound cannon being developed too? if only they'd play bass cannon with it to kill, then you'd kick it by not only a bass cannon, but a bass gun
There is the LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Device), but it can only play high frequency tones because it's a piezo speaker.
the loudest ive been exposed too was 130db from a federal signal thunderbolt 1003 tornado siren from 1/2 block away, and yeah my eardrums stung when the horn rotated to where it was facing me. gunfire doesn't really hurt my ears all the much.
the loadest sound i heard was a trainhorn 😂
omg yes
Dhsj Sjsj Yes me to
Loudest sound is me sneaking to the kitchen when everyone is asleep
Does that mean listening to dank memes is bad?

Loudest noise for me? Microwave end beep at 3am while the rest of the family sleeps, Kidding. Blue Angels Sneak Pass at an air show.
Is sound pressure the reason I always get a headache if I turn my subwoofer up too much?
Loudest noice i've ever been exposed to: My neighbors
the only thing that made my ears ring was only one time when I popped a bubble in bubble wrap right up to my ear. (I have been to rock concerts, drag races, and air shows with jets)
One time I was in a car that had a 10,000 Watt sterio system and the bass was sick, it made it hard for me to breathe. My chest felt weird.
loudest noise probably is thunder - the lightning hit a tree about 100 yds away from where i was standing, and i remember hearing a lot of ringing after that.
I have to plug my ear during singing in church, and must remind my husband frequently to talk softer.
what about sound systems that hit 160s (db) at like 38 hz? their eardrums don't burst? does the frequency of the sound make a difference?
I was six feet away from an Atlas Aegina steering rocket when it fired at a right angle to me. It shook my body.
The loudest noise I’ve ever heard is when someone opens clash of clans on a bus
