Since finding your channel in July, I've gone from nothing to a great outback from Mile high, building a PID, modifying boil kettles and loving all the knowledge that you share with us! I'm on batch 5 and 6 of "delectable goodness" and the wife has taken a "shine" to my new hobby! Thank you so much for being a great resource for all of us who are following you.
The science behind the process just makes so much sense when you explain it...I just enjoy the heck out of it and I feel like I’ve really learned something
This whole video series is amazing. thank you so much. I feel like you're the mr wizard of the distillation world. I'm learning so much and don't let anybody tell you that you're geeking out. Distillation is a Science & distillers are scientists. You really can't understand the science enough. Thank you for this!!!
George I need serious help. When I first starting moonshine seemed so easy at first. I’ve watched many of your videos which are full of info. I buy the best grains available on the market. I farmed corn & other grains for 29 yrs. it seems like the more info that I try applying has resulting in low abv & slow fermentation. I recently watched you show how to make a turbo yeast. My moonshiner friends tell me how they run their mash in as little as 3-7 days. I usually use Red Star distillers yeast. I cook my grains till they become soft. I buy malted barley & rye but I still add amylase when my temp gets down to 165* in another pot I dissolve my sugar to a boil & allow to cool. I’m not a fan of sugar wash because I love the flavor of grains. For my 58 gal barrel I’ll had approximately 60 lbs of grains & 60-100 lbs sugar. I don’t use city water I buy 5 gal bottles. I usually only add a teaspoon of yeast energizer & a teaspoon of diammonium phosphate per barrel. I’ve tried adding 1-2 lbs of yeast per barrel. I keep my mash between 80-90* durning fermentation. It takes 3 weeks or longer to get high abv. It seems when I used a garbage can than was about 2’ shorter I’d get 20% when I check my gravity gauge at day 7 it’s only add beer. When I used fruit with grains my abv even goes higher but it takes 4 weeks. I’ve boughten name brand 48 yeast & used 5 lbs as they directed but my grains are still floating. I’m indoors & I’m using a electric blanket to keep my mash warm. I don’t sell my shine so I’m not in a hurry. But I can’t help to think I’m screwing up somewhere. When I used 1 lb grain, 2 lbs sugar to every gallon of water & a can of tomato paste it was consistent high abv in 3 weeks every time. It seems the harder I try the worse it comes out. Please George could you correct my compass Sir.
if teaching the process is what people call geeking out, then pass that this way I'll geek out with ya. you're the man don't stop teaching the process.
Hey George, It's kind of like beating a dead horse, but can you bust out the whiteboard and review the lintner calculations to build a mash? Your current mash would be a good example to use. 25lbs of corn and 12lbs of 2 row.
Hello ...great channel, I have some questions about temp setting on a PID controller during a run...should you increase the set temp throughout the run ? And when should you thank you and keep up the channel
Funny how I was YOUR 84th Like....and this....is my 84th viewed making alcohol videos....Just got done counting on my UA-cam History....and YOUR Class Bell rang....Just....Coincidence?... Haven't even had no Beers tonight....lol
I'm re-watching most of your videos for a few reasons. Mainly because they are extremely informative and I really like the way you present it. Can't wait for you to start making new videos but you should also enjoy your time off so you can be the best George you can be. Lol.
Thank you for what you do brother. Way I see it. People are going to do it even if it is illegal in their state, but at least they can watch you and learn how to do it safely :)
George you’ve mentioned in past videos that if your shooting for a high ABV, you’re not really making alcohol, you’re making fuel...or something to the affect; you’ve also mentioned ABV doesn’t influence proof. Can you clarify?
Iv made corn mash befor but this last time i wanted to try and ferment on the grain ill never do it again i had almost no volume left so i had to add water good thing i was at 17%abv before i added and got it down to 10% but ill never do it again im only going to be fermenting off the grain so i can keep my 5 gallon higher abv wash
The only thing that seems odd here, is why expensive barley? Why not have some cheap malted corn? Or is that because there is no malted corn available?
When making a traditional corn whisky way back in the day, did they do this or just use the corn as a flavor like in the UJSSM recipe? Also, what recipes do modern day, large distilling companies use? Thanks again George
I am new to your channel and still catching up. I have seen things in your videos a couple of times and wondered what brand or what type it is. The corn grinder in this video. It would be nice if when using a particular tool in a video, such as the corn grinder, you would mention specifically what that tool is. BTW, can you tell me what corn grinder that is? Thanks.
@Ulf Alexandersson, different yeasts have different alcohol tolerances so the yeast you mention might / most likely would work with enough time. However, George did an episode not too long ago on yeast and sugar conversion into alcohol and it appeared that the rate of conversion was higher the lower the ABV was. With that said, I am sure George would say, "find the process that works for you as long as you adhere to the principles!" with a big smile on his face... #happyDistilling
Hey! I have a question about autotuning the PID T series controller that you have shown in many of your videos. When should I autotune the PID controller? (if at all) Should I autotune it during a run or autotune it in the pot and heater element I am using. filled with water or something like that?
@@BarleyandHopsBrewing By once do you mean once per a specific run or once per a still setup(for a specific boiler with a specific heater element using a specific mash/wash etc) ? Love the videos!
@Velsbasketcase, try it and let the community know how your corn Sake comes out... sounds interesting as I would expect the result to be as well. I encourage you... #happyDistilling
find a used beer keg and get a good welder to install sanitary fittings on it. Local run to H/D for copper piping and fittings and you can build a decent setup for a couple hundred bucks(or so I've been told). Watch a few videos here and you can learn to build a heating system for under $40.00 and also build a PID.

That is awesome!
I appreciate your geeking out on the topics you cover
Happy distilling. Thanks for all you do George.
Any episode that starts out with the three legged stool has got to be good!

And SO true!
You never talk too much George. You talk what you talk and we learn a lot. Tanks tanks & tanks
George all your videos are magic. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and continuing to add to this community.
Thank you so much for being a great resource for all of us who are following you.
George, you remind me of my old HVAC instructor. I have learned a lot from you both with great results.
Great video George like always enjoyed

Thanks. Great topic. I watch alot of distilling videos, but your videos have the best details of the process.
You're geeking out got me into the hobby George. I'm a why guy and you always answer my questions with your in-depth knowledge.
George you always do a great job with your videos.. a wealth of knowledge!! Keep them coming!
I enjoy how you teach and the quantity of information you give out. Thank you.
Thanks George, haven't decided on purchasing that grinder. But since there set one on your table.
Thank you for the great video.
Awesome George Thx
You're a good man George!! There are always critics. Mozart was told one of his symphonies had "too many notes". Take it with a grain of salt bro!

Don't worry George we love how you geek out
Hi George . Greetings from Brazil. Very nice videos 👏👏 and thx for all explanations 👍
Hi George, can i use sprout rise grains instead of barley. Coz in asia barley very hard to find & bit expensive. Thanx

And the only reason i want a higher abv wash is so i can have higher yield of out put id rather have more hearts to water down to 100 proof
Wish he would let the moonshine world know if he is ok... Wish best for him
The only thing that seems odd here, is why expensive barley? Why not have some cheap malted corn? Or is that because there is no malted corn available?
Keep being all technical some of us love it.
Dave, when you grind the corn as you did with what grinder. Do you use that dust in with the mash or do you sift it out first?
Lol first to like... love ya channel George...
Is there a different gravity point thermometer for beer and spirits ?
When making a traditional corn whisky way back in the day, did they do this or just use the corn as a flavor like in the UJSSM recipe? Also, what recipes do modern day, large distilling companies use?
Thanks again George
They did this. The whole point was to turn worthless grain into something that would sell better and last longer (liquor)

It would be nice if when using a particular tool in a video, such as the corn grinder, you would mention specifically what that tool is. BTW, can you tell me what corn grinder that is? Thanks.
Which gravity point thermometer do you use.
I noticed you said you were using a two row. I'm a noob, if I'm trying to make a whiskey or a bourbon shouldn't I use six row?
What if you have a jeast like WLP099 wich can make alcohol up to 25%? Do you mean that all above 15% it will make more "foreshot" / Metanol?
@Ulf Alexandersson, different yeasts have different alcohol tolerances so the yeast you mention might / most likely would work with enough time. It sounded like he said “You can use a hamburger to drive a nail!”!😂
Preach on George !
Im looking for a hobby this looks so much fun I'm not a drinker I enjoy the science behind its so interesting
George, I see you have a milling grinder. I also see a bag of corn. Can you please tell me where you buy that corn? Thank you.
George might cringe at this - but a lot of people get it at the feed supply store (for cattle) .
Is the ratio 1 1/5 lbs of corn for 1 gal of water is applicable in kilos to liter?
You are a legend.
I was wondering if you can make straight corn whiskey 🤔
Thank you George!!
Hey!
I have a question about autotuning the PID T series controller that you have shown in many of your videos. When should I autotune the PID controller? (if at all) Should I autotune it during a run or autotune it in the pot and heater element I am using. filled with water or something like that?
Autotune once at or near operating temp. You can autotune whenever you like but once is enough.
@@BarleyandHopsBrewing By once do you mean once per a specific run or once per a still setup(for a specific boiler with a specific heater element using a specific mash/wash etc) ?
Love the videos!
HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH YEAST TO USE WHEN MAKING MASH ?
I am wondering, Could you substitute flaked corn in this recipe if you don't have a mill or would you want to just buy milled corn and barley?
Yes, Flaked corn is pre-gelatinized and steam rolled.
George I think you're passionate about this. Hence the length of you explanations.
Hello George. Is this corn, sweet corn?
Thank you..
Do you have a 3 gallon mash Recipe
Master grasshopper please come back .. 🙏🍷🥃🏴☠️
What about growing koji on your corn to convert the starch?
@Velsbasketcase, try it and let the community know how your corn Sake comes out... sounds interesting as I would expect the result to be as well. I encourage you... #happyDistilling
Did you try this? I have some koji otw…
Can cornmeal be used?
Yes. It’s just hard to strain out of your product because of how fine it is.
George ... has anybody told you that you don’t talk enough?
Notification squad. But I'm late by 15 minutes. #Happydistilling
I'm on my way to buy a decent distiller but I can't spend 1000$ anyone have any tips to save me some cash but still deliver quality?

nooooooo, don't leave me hanging 😊😉
Yes, you talk a lot, but about the subject at hand!
George - Tried to call you - are you still taking calls and emails?
@Bill Glenn, He is... patience is a key here... you have to imagine the email and call volume with 107K + subs... George be a busy man...
you act like everyone has all the money to buy all this
when you should look this this an say this will work for your needs
saccharification
been watching you for over 2 years George who is this video aimed at seems a bit basic for 100,000 of us at least no ?
Always good to go over some basics.
