real proportional representation will not favour the Labour Party. It WILL be a fair system. I am tired of the safe seat system negating millions of votes at every election.

@beltanebabe55 Under certain circumstances, it can be less proportional, but I think the broader point is that it psychologically prepares people to start expressing degrees of party preference by ranking candidates, and finally weens them off simply putting a cross in a box. I agree AV isn't nearly enough, but at least it finally introduces an element of proportionality to the voter. What would have been a better compromise was if we saw the Lib Dems being able to hold out for AV+.

Purple is half way between red (left) and blue (right).
Of course, they forgot to invite any rightists (they don't play steel drums).
I wonder how happy these people would be when UKIP and BNP win the balance of power.

I have been told that AV is worse than the system we have now. What we need is PR.

I'd respect the critics of electoral reform here if they actually put forward a credible case for the status quo instead of belying their ignorance with lame insults.
Purple: it's the historic colour of suffrage. It's specifically a non-partisan colour for a non-partisan organisation. If you didn't know that then you need Wikipedia.
We removed every last trace of the protest before we left. The clean-up bill was zero.
Lastly, go & figure out why section 132 of SOCPA was NOT used against us.

@zenscara I know but I was told it will still lead to a party having overall control. Also from my experience when canvassing for Lib Dems....I think a lot of the people I spoke to would not understand the system. I don't mean to be nasty to anyone but so many of the people I met don't even understand the system we have now and I think AV is very complicated. I don't think it will help where I am as it has been a Tory stronghold since about 1929.....HELP! Maybe I will do some more research.

@beltanebabe55 From the video: "AV is just the beginning" -- it at least helps remove the 'need' for tactical voting!

@Rooty9135 mate Labour had 13 years to change the system to AV+ and never did it, because FPTP favours them. AV+ is much better than FTPT or AV. Pure PR couldn't work here I don't think, but we definitely need a more proportional system to FTPT which is very undemocratic.

@fahaz78 yes but each area of the uk makes up the entire uk. so if enough people voted lib dem, they would have won instead of coming in 2nd after labour and the conservatives in most areas and only getting 57 seats. obviously this is counting each area independently rather than the country as a whole but the idea of getting rid of the 'area' based votes would mean getting rid of seats because seats in parliament stand for their representative areas.

  • @Rooty9135

@reallynaked In those 13 years there was no reason to. Things were looking good for them, no need to cause unnecessary upheaval. AV+ is less proportional than FPTP, as it favours Labour and the Liberals incredibly. The Tories would only get the second votes of smaller parties like UKIP.

AV won't lead to "purple", it'll lead to red, red and more red. Labour were advocating AV+ because it would give them a huge advantage, as all the loser Liberal voters would have Labour as their second preference. It's a ridiculous system and the Tories had better campaign hard to get people to say no to it.

@mjclarke1974 mate I am all for PR I just don't think it's practical, how could we retain a constituency link with a full-blown PR system?

why are they so pissed off? conservatives won, most people voted conservative.. i may be sounding naive here, but what do they mean when they said, "we want 1 vote to mean 1, not 0.33."? did people want labour or something? because labour is the only party thats not really getting what they want at all this time.

nice to see people doing something but the government dnt care. Petition could have had 50 million signatures, there greedy and dnt care. maybe if people did like they do in france massive marches in the main cities which shuts the main cities down, there gov panics and something is done. Look at marches in youtube in france....i think there was 1 on university fees,so many people turned up,small numbers like this will do nothing sadly
