  • This is a rundown of some of the things I've learned while living in Alaska. I also included a tour of Ketchikan, AK.
I've worked at Ketchikan High School (kayhi) as an AmeriCorps VISTA.

A community that's supportive. The summers are the best for wildlife. Our rainforest isn't much of a rainforest anymore. If you visit, bring your camera.

It's been a honor. I have met so many good people, I feel very lucky to have been chosen to be a VISTA at Kayhi.

You just need to know how to shop in Alaska. If you want what you want when you want it, you're going to pay out the nose, but you can find what you need when it's there (and on sale). I buy a lot in bulk when things are on sale. With a bit of smart shopping, I spend less here than I did in WA state or TX.

EVERYTHING in Alaska is expensive, even in Anchorage- but in the Bush communities...it is insane!!
    Prices in Anchorage:
    Loaf of Bread: $2.49
    Gallon of Milk: $3.88
Gallon of Gasoline: $2.40 (and to us, this is CHEAP)
    Average New Home: $239,000.00
    New Car: $21,750.00
In my opinion, just at the words "if you are lucky" next to each of those prices.

Are you still there and if you don't mind, what made you move there? My son is attempting to live there and I want to visit soon.

Yes. With some AmeriCorps programs you can not have two jobs. There are also some other things you can't do, like volunteer for a political campaign (and things along that line)

have been watching your channel for a while and am thinking about moving out to Alaska. from what i can gather, Anchorage and Ketchikan (sp?) are the best cities to live. which do you feel is more ripe with opportunity?? iv already got a few possible jobs lined up in Anchorage but have heard some things about Ketchikan as well. any advice would be appreciated, thanks :)
